I value your impressions and thoughts about this topic. My husband and I are reversed- he’s Venezolano/Colombiano, left for the US at 20yrs old, I’m the American. The safety thing bums me out too. We have been able to keep up our night walking tho in Cartagena because the walled city has so many tourists at night and it’s so hot during the day. So we walk all over the old city at nighttime. But I wouldn’t do that anywhere else in Colombia. Here’s another question: do you feel that the trade offs are worth the lack of safety in Colombia? I always miss Colombia & I am so sad when I leave but feel relief as soon as we are stateside too. Unless someone has been to Colombia and has enjoyed themselves there they ask “why would you even go there if you feel so unsafe”. I know you 2 understand this conflict. For my husband this lack of security is 2nd nature to him. He just adjusts his behavior and he seems fine. For me it adds a little more stress than that. But at the same time the pace of life and the focus on relationships and not works puts me at ease. Such a weird balance🤪.

Jonny here... So much to unpack here! - The trade off is worth is for now. I will say we kind of answer this in this next upcoming video which will post next Saturday. But in general, I do get annoyed by the safe factor because I've stopped going outside and taking walks on my own... But, on the flip side I started going to gym like almost everyday. The other benefit of being here is that Widny's mood is so much more cheery when she's close to family and this brings a higher frequency of positive energy in to the home. So that's been very nice. --- Overtime I find there are things I really enjoy about Colombia I know I won't get in the US and vice versa, so... it's really caused me to get into the present moment more often and to be thankful for what I am experience right here right now, like all the time. :-)

It's not the easiest thing to pull off! - But the two of us are very thankful it everyday, otherwise, we wouldn't be able to do this. Although, that first full year here, Jonny wasn't working full-time. - We've been w/our employers over 5 years and have gained more then trust with them.

What does that mean? What is “rolita” and “ Barranquilla”?
@lifetheorycouple
@lifetheorycouple 7 ай бұрын
@ladyjane47266 Rolo/Rola is what someone is called from Bogota. Calling someone from Barranquilla is a little more intuitive, Barranquillero/Barranquillera. - Colombia has several subregional cultures and calls each group by a different name. People from Medellin and parts of Antioquia are often called Paisas, for example.

I have worked in customer service for 10 years in different accounts and companies, for the US, other countries in South America, etc. In mixed teams of people from many countries including Americans. People who work for US customer service here in Colombia are exploited because of the US mentality of "the customer is always right", so people from the US call in (not all, but many) with an attitude asking often for absurd things, like crappy old flip phones to be replaced by the newest most expensive smartphones, for their electricity bill to be waived, for their phone service to be free, their appliances to be fixed or replaced for new ones for free and out of warranty, etc. I mean, I know this is totally gross and a nasty example but being perfectly blunt, this people would return used underwear and feel like they are entitled to have someone else wear it or the company to get a loss on the sale, if they get a dollar from it. You name a ridiculous and wild demand, I've probably heard it. If someone nice called in, 99% of the time they were Canadian (sorry Johnny, do not hate me, I love your channel). And you as a rep, were supposed to keep it very very professional and friendly even if people insulted you. Funny thing was, Americans themselves were more cocky and prone to talk back to the customers. But it was tolerated from them, not from us colombians, indians or filipinos doing the same job for a third party and making a lot less money than them. The bad side of customer service here is that people are bored, underpaid, mistreated by stupid egomaniac inept management, hate the job and do the bare minimum, but that is more common in local, Spanish speaking customer service, where they transfer you from one line to another and will not do anything, which is actually really rage inducing for locals as well, but I guess it looks even worse from someone coming from a customer-pleasing, but also more practical and "first contact resolution" oriented culture. As for restaurant service, as you guys know, in Colombia the tip is included in the bill and people usually do not refuse to pay it even if the service is crappy, because nobody at least in Bogota wants to cause a scene at a restaurant. So, they get the tips regardless of their performance and everyone should benefit from them, even the people in the kitchen, they are supposed to be paid to everyone in the restaurant evenly. And to be perfectly honest, it is common for restaurants not to report tips in full and put them in their earnings (that is not only unethical but it makes the servers less motivated and reliant on their base salary as opposed to counting on a nice bonus) or for young chefs to do unpaid internships at places like Humo Negro just for the flex of saying that you worked in a fancy pants high cuisine place. Colombian restaurant staff is not as motivated to go above and beyond as American staff, because in the US it is legal to pay them less than the minimum wage for an hour if the tips add up, so their salary consists mainly on tips. They are nicer and more efficient in most cases because your satisfaction and your buck is their livelihood. You literally pay their salary.

That's a LOT of passion! - I can see how Americans are more demanding than most and almost opportunistic about what they can ask for... When I think of customer service I think more of dining experiences. For example, just modifying a dish a little bit... Places that are less "established" or "fancy" will just tell you no. Once we went to a Poke bowl place and asked for the rice to be replaced with lettuce. They said no... Crepes and Waffles, love their ice cream and deserts... But, you cannot change the flavor of ice cream on most deserts unless it specifically says you can on the menu, they just don't do it.... It's not Colombian culture to for wait staff to check on you... You want something, you call someone, basically... Anywho, these are just miner dinning things I experience while abroad in Colombia.

Jonny here! - I believe what I was saying about 'my own time' is getting taken out of context. In the US I used to take many walks by myself, with my headphones in, and wonder up and down roads/streets I didn't really know. Sometimes cities streets and more often times parks and large suburbs... It's my ways winding down, but you're not going to see me do that near any major city in Colombia, I might get robbed.

HA! - I know it seems that way but's far from what really happened. We dated for a over a year before making the decision to get married. Plus, Widny was working, A LOT! - Another fact, when we moved to Colombia, that first year Jonny didn't even work full-time or make as much as Widy. So tables turned.
