Hi you two, i had already visited Bogota 4 times before I watched your videos and right now i'm in my cozy loft apartment above the Candileria. Tomorrow i will attempt to get out of town a little and go up the mountain. I am so serious about living here next year, but so far I have been a little lazy finding the right information. How do i get around the ex pat tax? Should i start a business? Or buy an apartment, i really love it here. And Ive never lived in a big city before but something just resonates with my heart here. Maybe someday i'll see you at Cafe del Mercado ? ❤ Gavin

Great questions in this comment. They are too big to answer in a comment however... If you're interested in staying in Colombia for the long run, I highly suggest working on getting your m-visa (Migrant Visa) and work with a law firm like Langon Law. Those m-visas last 2 years... Taxes, depending on your source of income, if it's outside of Colombia, you may no need to pay tax. I suggest reaching out to a tax professional to understand this.... Start a business? We are not the best source of info on how to do this as we have not ran our own profitable businesses, we are remote corporate employees.... Buying is way more complicated and locks you down. If you're like us, it was just more economical to go the Airbnb route and jump around Colombia for a while.... Cafe del Mercado? Unfortunately at the time of typing this comment we have decided to leave Colombia to explore some other countries. ---- BEST OF LUCK

Ok I understand your so-called healthy lifestyle but my question is why didn't you investigate first where to look for healthy food?, this is provocative and offensive, you could have edited that part and you would have saved yourselves a bad time answering negative comments. However this is a very bad advertisement for your YT channel, you go to a place without knowing what you eat and then throw it away, I wouldn't think twice about it. Best regards

We appreciate your view and comment. - We did hear about Mote Con Huesillos from several people and because of that reason we decided to try it. Because it did not sound appetizing to us and even looking at picture, we did decide to share just one of them, and did take about 15-20 minutes eating it slowly before we decided we couldn't finish it... We do no mean to offend, it was just not a drink/dessert for us... --- We also disagree, you should travel the world and try stuff you never heard of in your life and get a real feel and experience for it. How else will you ever know? --- We also prefer to give an honest opinion versus putting a fake positive spin on everything as you see with a lot of YT channels. --- So yes, we do not like Mote Con Huesillos.

TRUE! - And that is the point we make in this video. It's not winter weather whatsoever. It's mild fall weather... Thanks for the video...and the brutally honest assessment about the bland food. As a possible future expat, I keep going back and forth on the issue of location. I love the weather in Medellin, but the city seems a bit wild for someone my age. Bogota has wild areas too, but its large and has a wide diversity of communities. I've looked into Bucaramanga, Cali, Cartegena, Manizales...and Armenia. From the videos, Armenia seems to be my speed...but, I dread bad food! This doesn't mean I need to eat out at great places all the time, but I at least need to be able to shop for good ingredients, including ethnic foods. In Bogota, I was relieved to locate more than one Asian grocery store. Apparently, Armenia has none. Bundled with your report on lousy restaurants, I think I'm crossing Armenia off the list. (So far, Usaquen is in the lead.) Thanks again!

@@lifetheorycouple Hey there! I'll tell you HOW I look for Asian grocery stores (or anything) in an unfamiliar city. (BTW, I was searching the whole city...not just Usaquen. I wasn't THAT optimistic.) I Google the city or region, then choose "Nearby" in the left column. For this, I entered "Asian grocery stores". Presto! I got 10 results, all located between southern Usaquen and Chapinero, between Bella Suiza and Centro. The most popular seem to be Y&Y Asian Market and Global Gourmet Market in Chico. There are four Mercatus9 markets of different sizes that seem to offer Japanese, Thai, and Chinese groceries, gifts, and snacks. The rest seem to be international markets that offer a mix of everything. From looking at the pictures, I can tell I won't be in a "food desert". Prices seem reasonable. You're definitely not going to find the selection you would get at a Lotte, HMart, Great Wall, or a 99 Ranch supermarket. But, all the essential sauces, seasonings, vinegars, canned and dry ingredients, condiments, snacks, beverages, and even cookware seem to be available. For me, this means that all I need for authentic Asian home cooking are quality meats, chicken, ginger, garlic, chilies, and the usual local veggies. There is HOPE in Bogota!!!

What if you have stuff in your pocket like a phone in one pocket and a wallet in another? It's usually apparent by the way these things press against your pants. Would that be considered "giving papaya"? I live in the US and I already practice all these precautions but I know here it's safer than in Medellin obviously lol

I (Widny) do feel uncomfortable when Jonny carries his phone in his front pocket but it’s honestly super common. All the males in my family do it but when we visit parts of town that are a bit more sketchy, they may put their belongings in a small backpack or on one of the women’s purses. We also visit these parts of town in larger groups, so we all feel more comfortable and safer.

@@lifetheorycouple Very interesting. So in other words, having the phone and/or wallet stick out like that and make an outline in your pockets is considered dar papaya? Is it like that everywhere in Colombia or only in small barrios that are low income and filled with crime?

I make Jonny put his phone somewhere else all the time, because we consider it’s a form of giving papaya. But other people, including locals, don’t. So, I think is up to you and your level of comfort 🤷‍♀️ It’s not like that all over Colombia, it’s bad in big cities but it feels pretty safe in smaller towns.

@@lifetheorycouple Oh yeah I can definitely see what you mean by emphasizing the importance of being careful in big cities. I would try as much as possible to not stick out in big metropolitan areas, but I feel like in suburbs it's not so bad since it's mostly families who live there. I guess at the end of the day it depends on the context, but I'm still surprised you and your husband consider having your phone and wallet create a shape in your pants pockets to be a form of giving papaya even though most locals don't consider it as such lol. Very fascinating.

The kid steals the show in this video! Thanks for making this. I was wondering how average people lived in Bogota.

Hehe thank you! It honestly was so fun including him in the video. We were “babysitting” that day and that was the fun activity of the day. We laughed at all the mistakes and bloopers, and making the video it’s now a memory we share together 💕

You left? Due to my Mother in Law’s aging and health I may be moving to Mazuren! I was hoping you would do a video of that area? My wife’s family will not let me go anywhere alone,, which is very frustrating! And you are such a cool couple I was hoping to meet you! Good luck in all your travels! Love your videos!

We will be back for sure! Bogotá is our second home 💕 I must say that my family was terrified of Jonny walking alone in the streets of Bogotá, but with him learning survival Spanish and all of the “safety tips,” we started to feel more and more comfortable. To the point that he would sometimes watch my little brother and they would go on small adventures around the neighborhood. Jonny has always expressed his need for his independence and how much he enjoys walking, so it is something that we had to respect and trust that everything will be fine. I would suggest communicating with your wife and her family to make sure they understand and they help you feel safe and confident navigating Bogotá, instead of being fearful.

I (Widny) have visited a couple of the humedales in the city but this is a great suggestion! I had not thought about taking Jonny to see one of those. Thank you!
