40 years ago Uganda was home to a large Asian community, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs called it paradise. But the peace and tranquillity that existed for generations was to be short lived due to the actions of Idi Amin. In 1972 he ordered Asians to leave the country and were given just 90 days to flee.
Pukaar News travelled to Uganda with Businessman Khalid Sheikh from Leicester. He was born in Uganda but had to leave with his family when he was just 14, but he regularly returns to visit his mothers grave.
Pukaar News spoke to other Ugandan Asians who were forced to leave 40 years ago but have since returned to the county and re-started businesses including Mayur Madhvani and Sudhir Ruparelia.

The sentiment in the late 60s and early 70s in Uganda was fixated on the assumption of the entitlement to equality of outcomes. The Indians were rich and natives were not. The sentiment was that the Indians were holding back the natives. The Indians saved their money and focused on commerce and rose up economically. The natives could not do this because they lacked the commerce culture not because they were inept. Many of the Indians came from Gujarat which had seen some very hard times and due to cyclical agriculture limitations. The people there learned and became savvy. In sharp contrast Uganda was a paradise of nature, there were fruit trees every where people had not seen hard times or famines, they did not have a history of hard times passed down through generations. Uganda had an abundance of food and was a net exporter of food till Idi Amin expelled the Indians.

This isn't true at all, Uganda saw extremely hard times around 1900 until 1920 hundreds of thousands of people died from the world's worst sleeping sickness epidemic.

@@stephenbrand5661 THat does not quite fit: He pointed out that a certain economical circumstance enforces a culture of frugality. If you look into the Black Death in Europe in the middle ages, you will see, that pandemics produce a different mentality. Though my gut feeling says, that mostly a lack of entrepreneurial spirit is due to violence and corruption - but I confess I don't know anything about Uganda's history.

@@tomasbickel58 "Uganda was a paradise of nature, there were fruit trees everywhere people had not seen hard times or famines..." This is the part of his comment to which I responded. I happen to know quite a bit about tropical diseases in Africa and Uganda has all of the worst ones being right next to DRC and South Sudan. For example malaria is consider to be "holoendemic" in Uganda which means that everyone who lives there becomes infected at least a once a year without any intervention or prevention.

@@stephenbrand5661 The Indians being talked about are the Gujarati folks. Gujarati are the most business oriented communities of India. The oldest Port of the world is located in the state of Gujarat. Business is in their genes. Gujaratis dominate trade in India, the richest man in India is also a Gujarati.

My sister is good friends with a Asian family who fled Uganda. They settled in California and became successful very quickly. When they were invited back by the new government the husband went to look at their house (which was almost in ruins). He asked his wife if she wanted to move back and she basically said "Hell no, I'm not leaving California!". He sold it and they're still here.

What is the point of your comment? What is new in it that we did not learn from report? Some Ugandan Asians have gone back, become successful and are thriving. Others, left, found success elsewhere and have not returned. That's life. The same could be said for a country like Germany. Some Jews got away (from a fate far worse than Asians experienced under Amin), went back and started a fresh successfully. Others opted not to return after settling down elsewhere. That's life.

When the Brits administered the place, they brought in Asians as laborers for building the railways, and among those who came were some who had experience as shop owners. As they started their own businesses, they filled a void in the economy, as the locals had no such acumen, and everyone benefited. As in Kenya, where the Mau Maus destroyed a vibrant economy simply because of their envy of the accomplishments of the European managers, in Uganda, Amin played upon this black envy to chase out the Asians, with whom he had no affiliations, in order to consolidate his rule; an impoverished former colony was the result. This is the pattern with all African-dominated countries (Haiti included), but it's always blamed upon whites (even decades or centuries down the line) by those who are incapable of accepting responsibility for their own actions...
@RonnieOtieno

chokkan7 This is so stupid. So you can compare Kenyan economy now and 1950s again what did Mau Mau destroyed?. So freedom fighters destroyed economy?. You may wonder why one would choose to use his head as storage for the teeth and completely refuse to utilize the brain
@chokkan7
@chokkan7 6 жыл бұрын
Admittedly, I puzzled over this for some time, trying to divine some meaning from the unintelligible mishmash of poorly-grasped English, before I offered a response. If I understand you correctly, are you maintaining that the Mau-Maus harmed no one? If so, you are sorely mistaken, as they not only murdered pregnant English women, but they also targeted those natives who had no objections to the British presence. As to 'freedom fighters', I'm unsure what you mean. Is this your name for those agents of Communist China who drank a mix of blood and semen, then attacked unarmed civilians? If so, then I need to ask: of what use is your own skull, other than to harbor a few remaining teeth? As a receptacle for brains, it seems to have sprung a leak...

chokkan7 So murdering someone is destroying the economy?. You have no idea whatever you are talking about. Trying to compare kenya now and 1960s is bullshit. There is a thin line between ignorance and being utterly stupid and you are both. We celebrate mau mau as freedom fighters it doesn't who they killed. If you aren't a kenyan you shouldn't even be talking. For sure shit is supposed to come from your ass not your brain but reading your comments, there is no difference.

You have a facility for name calling, but not so much for making logical connections. If you disagree with any portion of my comment, why not make a rebuttal, rather than simply calling me names or telling me I don't have the right to make an observation? Personally, I'd rather have a civil discourse, as that's the way people learn and better themselves, but it's clear you can only rant incoherently; there's nothing I could hope to learn from someone like you. You don't even understand your own history...
@RonnieOtieno

chokkan7 I reply people based on their arguments. If you want to know how progressive kenya has been and how colonialists treated people. Read and research. If the kind of treatment during colonial days were still their you couldn't have seen many rich and middle class people in Kenya. Ooh and btw British worked this way A was Africans B was Indians and C Europeans based on racism and white superiority. Kenya is so good can't be compared to colonial days even if we have some problems. Technically all African countries are just good compared to oppression days. Lol try hard I know everything about Kenya.

Amin kicked out the Asians which was a terrible ordeal for them, but they got the last laugh because after their departure Uganda's economy collapsed and the country severely suffered. He who laughs last laughs best.

Uganda got oil, gold etc now. Who will laugh last? Indian were restricted to towns and never ventured outside. It was Britain and Israeli who brought Amin in and when Amin and Gadaffi got close, the duo turned on him and blockaded Ugandan economy. In 1930s world recession, Uganda never felt the effect because the natives grew and ate their crops.

Ia shilluk collo - Exchange rates mean nothing as the world economy grown since 1975 - the average house in the UK was £10,000 then and now it's £210,000. IDI Amin ruined Uganda just as Mugabe did to Zimbabwe and the ANC are doing to SA - Tribal hatred is rampant in Africa along with corruption and injustice such a shame and such a waste.

To Kenian Dude- I am a white south african, I never thought african people stupid, if you dont live in a society that teach you you cannot learn, I helped at a church, the women wanted to learn cooking, a stuped girl that gave the cooking lessons, showed them how to make a marange for ice cream. When I started the class they were not friendly, I taught them how to make budget meals, that was healthy. Soon everyone gave me some recipe, they learn fast, are very friendly. We also had a male -he wanted to learn how to read and write- he was only there for the food, I helped him and after a year he knew the alphabet and slowly stared to read, that is not dumm, nobody think they are dumm they have very few oportunities, and everyone knows that.

@@0601ac It will work in Africa if the corrupt governments let go of control of all industries. If Africa was to privatize everything, they will surely see better economies. Capitalism has many flaws as well but I am convinced it is the best system. India itself is a beneficiary of open markets when they opened up the country to private investments in the 1990s. Before that the Indian economy was even worse off than Pakistan but now they have overtaken things by 100 fold.

Its true the economy was hit hard in the short run bt in the long run the bad times trained Ugandans how to be entrepreneurs themselves and not rely on indians to run the economy of an African country. Today 70% businesses in the country's capital Kampala are owned and ran by Ugandans them selves. Yes president Iddi Amin did a bad thing to the Asian business men bt to us as Ugandans,he gave us an opportunity to own the future of our country instead of foreigners. mistakes were made, but now Ugandan are more business minded than before. Uganda is unique that's y every foreign who steps in doesn't want to step out.
