Wendy and Andy (Alison Steadman and Jim Broadbent) and their twin daughters (Jane Horrocks and Claire Skinner) live in North London. One daughter is a spitting bulimic, while the other is set to flee the nest to America. In the middle of this everyday family chaos is Wendy, a picture of cheery survival.
Written and directed by Mike Leigh (Secrets & Lies, Happy-Go-Lucky), and also starring Stephen Rea, Timothy Spall and David Thewlis.
A Film4 Production, released in the UK on 22nd March 1991.

I had to force myself to keep watching in the beginning but the last hour is SUPURB. I think it's SO real life you almost feel like a voyeur watching it.

One of my favourite Mike Leigh films, a wonderful portayal of a North London working class family. Totally funny with a tinge of sadness, works amazingly well.

It used to be on KZfaq. The full film, that is, but I checked recently and it's been taken down. Great film. I lived quite happily in North London in the 80s and this was fairly typical.

Yes! 'Aubrey' (Timothy Spall) with his Radio 1 DJ style clothing and red glasses is a clearly recognisable 80s/early 90s north London type.

Finally found! The "yanked...racist!" bit has lived in my head for years. They used to show this on Bravo back when it was an amazing movie channel and not reality drivel. I knew it was Jane Horrocks, just didn't remember the twins were two actresses and not a dual role.

@@revol148 Mike Leigh is one of the greatest British film makers ever. He has to go to Studio Canal in France for most of his funding because we have pitifully poor funding of films in the Uk

Presumably you've seen Sexy beast and wondered why bother? or more specifically why can the British make films any more that are both credible and are NOT directed by Richard Curtis?

@@johnmulligan455 you're the sort of person says: "don't criticise Oasis after all how many millions are you worth? How many records have you sold? Noel Gallagher is worth millions more than me (maybe even you) but my opinion of that atrocious band is still valid regardless.Come to think of it the late Sunday Times TV critic Adrian Gill disliked Leigh particularly with regard to his condescension of the white working classes - there I hope he is a valid critic in your eyes although he never directed or wrote any films himself so perhaps not.

@@johnmulligan455 (a) Dear Johnny M Oasis were one of the biggest rock bands to come out of the UK in the 1990's - are you seriously telling me you've never heard of them?! (b) "you're the sort of person" - easily done after all most people are easily stereotypical hence it's simple to to generalise a personality without ever meeting them in the flesh - 45 years of dealing with homo-sapiens has taught me how underwhelming they are.

Characters are too over the top and exaggerated. Leigh's best work was Nuts in May and Abigail's Party. Both very true to life.

Once upon a time people who appreciated film flocked to Mike Leigh movies. What happened? CGI-manipulated action thrillers based on comic books and made to be approved by Chinese government censors is what happened.
