The role of Judith was played by Sue Jones-Davies. When she became Mayor of Aberystwyth, Wales in 2008 she overturned a 30-year ban on The Life of Brian in the town. She also organized a charity screening of the film.

It's a satire. It's supposed to make you think as much as laugh. Often, making a satire is the only way to approach difficult subjects. Your reaction is fine and it's nothing to apologize for.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 жыл бұрын
It's also called "black humour" or "gallows humour"; it's a way of approaching horrific and fraught subjects through laughter. The most iconic example is Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal", in which he satirized the genocidal policies of the British towards the Irish by suggesting that the British should simply eat all the Irish babies. Black humour gets you laughing to broach the subject, then leaves you with that ambivalent feeling to force you to reflect on the topic.

The movie was quite controversial. Certain political elements denounced the movie as blasphemy. With no sense of irony, they claimed that Brian was actually Jesus which was both insulting and blasphemous as it denies Jesus's divinity. This was fairly wide spread, and the movie got banned in Norway under blasphemy laws. However, this did prompt Sweden to advertise the movie as "so funny it had to be banned in Norway". There was also a debate with Cleese and Palin arguing against two religious figures, including a Bishop. While the original debate probably isn't worth checking out, the parody of it put on by the comedy show Not the Nine O'Clock News is very much worth checking out - they use the exact same arguments but with the table turned, which really shows just how silly things were.

I've got to say the debate between Cleese/Palin and Muggeridge/the Bishop of Southwark is utterly compelling, and very much worth watching. Palin's look in the delivery of 'He has a wife you know' is priceless, because it sets up the punchline perfectly. Incidentally the sub title ought really to be: 'Incontinentia Buttox' rather than' Buttocks' because female nouns in Latin end in an x, such as aviatrix, dominatrix etc. The Latin jokes are clearly a result of suffering years of abuse from Latin teachers with the silliness their antidote. The reception in the UK was hostile from organised religion, but hilarity from everyone else as the film attacks bigotry and intolerance, not Christ's teaching. It is frequently cited as the funniest British comedy film ever made.

I've always thought Life of Brian was the best Monty Python movie. It accurately satirizes the middle east at that time and plays with things like the Latin the members of Monty Python had faced from domineering teachers in school. Not only was it comedic, but it was gritty and truthful. They didn't shy away from anything. No sacred cows, not even full nudity. We have such a poor relationship with our bodies now that people are shocked at seeing what they (half) see everyday - their own unclothed miraculous bodies. Monty Python were well educated philosophers who educated and spoke truth under the umbra of slapstick. The slapstick scores fans on one level, but the knowing winks and deep truths in satire scores even more fans. And so their truth gets spread.

I first found your channel when you did Holy Grail, so I'm glad to see you liked Python enough to watch more. My fave scenes in this one are the stoning, the secret meetings, and when they made fun of Pilate's lisp. So pretty much the ones where they take the jokes way too far and too long. You made me LOL at your reaction to the alien spaceship part! Fun fact: The song at the end has become one of the most popular songs played at funerals in the UK.

My favorite thing about reactors watching comedy movies, is when the total creativity of their reaction is to explain the jokes. It would be awful to watch someone just laugh and enjoy a comedy classic. It's much better when they explain every single joke. As everyone knows, explaining the joke makes the impact of the joke so much funnier. Thank you, Duaffy.

There are a couple cameos in the movie. The old man in the beard at the end of the shoe/gourd debate is Spike Mulligan a bristish comedian who was a major influence on Python. The second is George Harrison of Beatles. This movie was made by his production company Hand Made Films. When Brian is being ushered out of his house a bearded man pops up and says hello. That's George.

John Cleese as the centurion correcting Brian's Latin is very funny to me. At the age of 13 they tried to teach me Latin. It did not go well. My teacher was exactly like that centurion. He didn't have a sword, but he was just about as frightening. and he would use phrases just like, "this is motion towards isn't boy?!"

There's a tradition of 'Always look on the bright side of life' at the end of Iron Maiden shows; its played over the PA, and the entire crowd sings along as they walk back to their camping places; especially at festivals. Always been a staple of festival experiences for me.

I also sometimes can't laugh at things because I feel too bad for a fictional character, the more real the character feels to me the worse I feel when something bad happens to them, even and especially when the shift is extreme, like in this case the sudden throwing of stones. The Samaritan who takes the cross of one guy and then gets crucified instead of him was was quick and surreal enough to be funny to me. The stoning scene was on the edge for me, but still funny.

YouTUbe does have a "Monty Python" channel, and many of their shows greatest sketches are there. Some of my favorites are "The Ministry of Silly Walks," "The Cheese Shop," and the "Dead Parrot Sketch." The funniest thing I've ever seen (though I honestly can't explain why, and it's only about a 30 second bit,) is "The Fish Slapping Dance." I break up just saying the name... Great to see you posting more Monty Python!

Since their previous movies did so well, the studios pretty much gave them carte blanche. But, just before they were due to start filming, the studio pulled funding. They had a good friend by the name George Harrison, who was a big fan. The former Beatle mortgaged his house to finance the film.
