The Kwai departs for Nassau to rescue a kid that has fallen unconscious to bring him to medical attention, leaving me stranded on Puka Puka. Fortunately the kid made it to a hospital and fully recovered the last I heard.
I begin explorations of this remote island and begin to learn more of the laid back way of life and the systems that govern the people of the island. Seems to be the closest thing to a utopian society that I have experienced! At the end of the video we interview a local chief and learn more about the history and way of life on Pukapuka of the Northern Cook Islands.

The story of the blackbirders is a sad one, but also fascinating. Most of the indentured 'slaves' taken from the Northern Cook Islands ended up in Peru. There were several hundred taken, mostly from Tongareva, as well as many from Kiribati all the way over the other side of the Pacific, in what is known as Micronesia. When they were eventually repatriated the Kiribati men were either deliberately or inadvertently dropped off in Tongareva where they mixed with the local population, lending a different character to the inhabitants of this island quite distinct from the other northern atolls of the Cooks. The repatriation also decimated the local populations by introducing smallpox and dysentery into these remote island communities. As I say, a very sad and tragic part of history here in the South Pacific. Slavers in Paradise gives a good account of the practice of these Blackbirders. Ata wai wolo!

A whole different definition of life. One of the rare channels here that actually shows us non-marketing stuff and true life on these islands. Kind of envy that you choose this life but thank you for letting us participate.

Like others have commented, I wish that I had shown your determination when I was younger! Having been to the Cook Islands twice, I can only dream of visiting the Northern Group. However, failing in that adventure, as a solo senior, I’ve opted for a 3 month house sit in the village of Liku on the island nation of Niue. The spirit of adventure can be found at any age! LOVE your videos!

I am enamored with the Cook Islands. Going back to Aitutaki in 2 weeks. 2nd trip in 12 months. My goal would be to get to the remote Northern Cooks. If I had found these islands at your age I would never leave.....keep it up cameron

The history of Pukapuka is so interesting! It really was a crossroads between Western and Eastern Polyneisa. Niueans are said to also have origins from Pukapuka; they were the most recent migration after the Samoans and Tongans.

I've been subscribed since you did your houseboat video 4 years ago. You've been to a lot of my favorite places in the world from the mountains of the PNW to the Himalayas. I didn't really get the long move to the remote Pacific islands, but this episode was a cut above your previous videos, which all have amazing scenic shots. It really felt like a window into life somewhere else with the local music and dance and interviews. By the way, you and Sloan Struble of Day-Glow look like twins.

My uncle and 2 crew members washed up on this island after their plane was forced to ditch, they spent 34 days drifting in a life raft. That was back in Jan-Feb 1942. Very interesting to actually see the island.

Can anyone fly there and stay there? How would I be able to claim by measly monthly retirement check from an American bank? Do they allow Outsiders to live in the island? I don't mind living in one of those cottages on the beach. It looks like a tropical paradise I have dreamed of. I will be a good citizen. I seldom drink so I won't be any trouble. Can I take a one way ticket to their island? Please....
