Stoicism for Inner Strength (book): amzn.to/3rZU0xL
Quite logically, we can’t get rid of something if we don’t acknowledge its existence. But what would happen if we accept the reality and truth of the things we resist? Would acceptance make them worse? Or could it actually be the first step toward improvement and transformation? This video explores how things we resist persist and what we accept transforms.

After being laid off twice in different cities, my life has had to start over from scratch each time. I'm turning 30 this year and will be flat broke because of leadership decisions that were wholly out of my control. I can either sit in sorrow and mourn the life I had envisioned for myself, or I can acknowledge it's painful and move forward. The "moving forward" part absolutely sucks, but I know future me will be grateful.

"The craving for something external is a form of suffering; it is a dissatisfaction with the present moment." It truly is, and this, I believe, aligns with the Stoic belief that we should cease to desire that which we lack, but instead appreciate that which we already have. I do this every day now, and it never fails to lift my mood.

I just got a dream job about 2 months ago and all of a sudden I knew that everyone I was working with was talking about me behind my back saying how I was a terrible person and fit for the job. I was convinced that I was going to be fired very soon so much so that I was looking into getting out of my lease and didn't even unpack after moving in. I struggle with mental health issues and severe paranoia at times, and I am always quick to isolate myself. I just realized that I resist the negative aspects of being human (like talking behind someones back, having negative and judgemental feelings towards others) so much that it started to take me down from the outside, and I resist because I believe people have done those things to me and I know how it feels. The self sabatoge mentioned in this video was going to be me acting cold and rude towards everybody, and asking my boss if I was going to be fired, which could have likely manifested into reality from my unconscious. I am greatful tho because I had been looking for my shadow for a while, experimenting a little here and there with no progress, but that experience revealed what part of it is, and this video allowed me to see it. Thank you.

Someone told me the meaning of life is to experience life. Right now I’m experiencing nostalgia for the first time in my life. It’s a difficult feeling. I would describe it as a pleasant suffering. I’ve been dreaming to experience what feels like and now I’m glad that I have this opportunity now. At the same time I understand that when I get home I will miss the exact same life I’m living right now. So the answer remains the same simple one - the only moment we possess is now.

Today, I had a session with my psychologist during which we discussed the concept of the shadow. It became evident that the shadow can greatly limit us if we refuse to acknowledge its existence. In my personal experience, I had been denying the presence of my femininity, which led me to construct a belief system aimed at rejecting it. I understand that terms and concepts related to this matter can be intricate, but that is not the focal point of the reflection I wish to share. I associated femininity with weakness and consequently, I resisted accepting aspects typically associated with women, such as traditional desires for a partner, family, and more. Confronting this reality can be a little uncomfortable, as it might initially appear contradictory and hypocritical. However, it is essential to recognize that denying the existence of our shadows can result in significant harm. It takes courage to acknowledge and accept them. Ultimately, embracing our shadows is the best course of action.

In order to end suffering and the existence of the shadow we need to quit overindulging in self-importance. Once you come to the full realization that you (self/ego) are not important all internal and external conflict/competition will cease to exist. Intuitively I think the stoics understood this but were not able to completely articulate it. Every conceptual dogma that exists depends on self-importance to perpetuate itself and continue to manipulate and exploit others in the name of the selfish ego.

Reminded me of the term Gestalt in deutsch - in my language it is something about your unresolved desires you keep resisting. Eine „Gestalt“ ist „geschlossen“, wenn Unangenehmes, dass stört und behindert, verarbeitet und somit erledigt ist My view: instead of resisting, try to figure out why you need to resist, and if the reason aligns with your values, and those values are good, just keep the focus on your values. Not bad, even though many parts of this video seem outdated to me. Person could only change oneself by accepting oneself, by considering unpleasant possibilities. Now I think that there are people who don't want to be good, only to seem good. And they consciously or unconsciously mimic the norms of society until they given enough power to reveal some of their true nature. But most of them are not too much into introspection.

I need your opinion. When talking about coming to terms with ones own weaknesses or repressed feelings, it usually applies to instinctual or harmless cravings, right? And the Shadow is just it manifesting in a bad way. Like Yung isn't saying accept your urge to steal, manipulate, or cheat on someone compulsively, but to find the root of the urge, and feed *that* urge ethically? (Like maybe the shadow trait is stealing, but the cause is you aren't rich but feel inferior without the object, and "incorporating the shadow" by acting on the urge in just buying it or going shopping with people that will get it to you)?

"What you resist, persists" is a glib and silly phrase. If you didn't resist gravity, you'd never make it out of bed in the morning. And if you've ever had to accomplish tasks in spite of crushing anxiety or depression, you know that sometimes you simply need to stand up against that which would defeat you--i.e., resist. In neither case do your efforts sustain that which oppresses you. In fact, that striving makes you stronger. It allows you to carry your physical and psychic loads more easily so you can better impose your will on any given situation. Perhaps "what you resist acknowledging, persists" would be more apt. In the example cited of a partner's drinking negatively affecting a relationship, the alcoholism needs to be acknowledged. But in order for things to change, the alcoholic must resist to urge the drink. (With support, I'm not saying just to white-knuckle it.) It may *never* recede completely, but it can be held at bay via effort (and a healthy imposition of the sort of belief Camus would scoff at). Without that hard work, the drinking will continue, and destroy.

Ok my question is how do you integrate your shadow wanting to flirt with other women, but being in a relationship where you don’t want to break up, and feel miserable in the end
@n.s.mcmahon6180
@n.s.mcmahon6180 9 ай бұрын
Well, you've taken the first step by accepting that you WANT to flirt with other women, rather than denying the feeling. Now integrating the shadow psychologically and acting on it are two different things. Know what the urge is, what it feels like, and what triggers it, accept that you'll face it from time to time, and understand that not acting upon it actually makes your current relationship stronger. Over time, the neurological pathways that trigger the urge in your brain will change, and the urge will become a very passing thought. Think of it this way: Who has a better relationship? A couple that has never seen hardship, doubt, and intrusion? Or one that has faced these things and stuck together in spite of them.

Human beings experience desire much more, quantitively, than other animals as we are much more able to imagine sets of circumstances that do not currently exist, even to the degree that in the current world an enormous number of us are engaged in professions that purposely seek to engender in others the belief that your current existence is unsatisfactory and more needs to be done. This makes us fantastic and terrible, even to ourselves.

Every time I hear about “the shadow” & Carl Jung, the Tool song “Forty Six and 2” pops into my head.

It’s a simple way to look at it. A more complex way is trying to stop resisting things in our life that we resist since nearly forever. Things that makes us anxious or things that we fear.

My greatest weakness is rumination. Wasting time and energy on thinking why wrongs done to me by people for no apparent reason. How to let go faster?

This was an incredible video, that I could have mentioned to various friends going through trauma - until it mentioned Camus. There is a critical difference between Jung and Camus. Jung's ideas, right or wrong, are psychology. His insights undoubtedly contain truth, even if they might not be completely correct. But Camus' are religion, atheistic religion and, IMHO, a particularly bad version of atheism. Disclaimer: I am a theist, but one who rejects religious claims that god is necessary for morality, purpose, etc. If god supplies those, where did god get them? Either he made them up for no reason, or he had good reasons. And if he had good reasons, those good reasons are available to atheists also. Therefore, Camus' claims that everything is purposeless is simply a reflection of the fact that he, Camus, is incapable of finding good reasons. I, and many other theists and atheists, are perfectly capable of finding good reasons for purpose, goodness, etc. So unfortunately no, I cannot offer this video to some people who desperately need the first good half. I suggest cutting it in half and putting up the Jungian part by itself.

What was the vid that spoke about having transhumanism applied to a person makes every single act of sentience by them a performance? *If you let it get to you, that's true; they work that constantly. I think it's their "driving" & "car", in their "carboTRON". UK.

The absolutist notions of enlightenment against suffering always strike me as anti-life, not that they are a bad meditation, but to resist vulgar pleasures and pursue productive suffering (work) is the way to love life
