I work in retail aswell and David definitely described the correct protocol of how to go about a shoplifter. If I am suss about someone I will check their bag at the door but thats all you can do! I have only once asked someone to give back the items they stole because I saw the guy put them in his sleeves and he gave the back and left. That women was 100% out of line and HR definitely need to know about her! Good job keeping your cool guys :)

I've never been accused of stealing something, but I have been treated badly by managers before. That was pretty messed up what that lady did and David's right, you have to wait until they are about to walk out of the store to fully accuse someone of stealing. My retail exp: 4yrs.

I work in a retail store, on the occasion I manage the shop and if I thought someone was stealing I would wait until they exit the shop and call security saying there is a supiscious person. The rest is up to security because like David said it is in thier right to search baggage. A lot of our stuff is tagged so even walking out the shop would set off an alarm, we can look in a bag but we can't touch anything. For customer service reasons you never accuse anyone even if youve seen them do it.

One time I was at a summer camp, and one of those girls who likes to cause drama "lost" her purse. She started crying, so a counsoler asked her who she thought did it. She just randomly pointed to people, including me. Then they had us all go into a room, grab our backpacks, and the cousolers searched our bags. They still couldn't find it so then they made us turn out our pockets for anything that might be hers. One girl turned out her phone. We all knew it was her phone, but the girl said that

When I went on an Elementy school tour with my chorus group, there was this lady that I bumped into. She dropped some of the stuff she was about to re-stock and she legit yelled in my face to get out of the store. I'm an easily scared person and I was about to faint, but my friend Devon and Macy backed me up and told the lady off. I told them after we left that they were slightly out of line as well, but I thanked them anyways. We told the mall manager and she was gone the next day. I just yesterday wrote a letter to the mall and stuff, so that's my way of solving my own problems.

I always have this feeling (and who knows, I might just be projecting) when I'm in Sephora shopping that I'm getting the stare down by the employees because I don't "look" like how a Sephora customer should look like. That is until I pay for the stuff and they realize that I'm signed up as a "beauty insider" and suddenly their voices perk right up!

I worked in retail for over 15 years and spent most of those years as a store manager. ANY store manager should know there are VERY clear steps laid out by loss prevention when someone is suspected of shoplifting. In no case (at least in my state) can there be an accusation before you pass the last point of purchase in any store. Usually that means actually leaving the store. Complain to their corporate mgmt...there's nothing a store manager hates more than a corporate complaint.

I agree. I would have given them back everything I was going to purchase and said "I'm not buying anything from a place that accuses its customers of stealing. I want your name(manager) and I want corporate's number." You both should definitely follow thru with calling corporate. I bet that lady seriously hurts that store business.

I was accused of bootlegging a movie and when my sister and I were walking out of the movie theater after the movie they stopped us in front of everyone and when I showed them that it was my cellphone that was flashing, they rolled their eyes and told us that they were calling the police. y'all really need to speak to corporate about that. that is just crazy! do not let that slide. i work in retail & we cannot say anything unless we physically watch a customer put something in their bag/pocket & almost walk out of the door with it. they can literally have it in their purse the entire time & we can do nothing bc they can end up paying for at the register. we can't stop them until they pass the register & are about to walk out of the door. that is so embarrassing. :/ & no apology!

I can't believe that happened! I felt uncomfortable in Sephora once because I felt like the employees thought I was stealing. It has happen to me a lot. I carry around a messenger type bag because I carry everything I need in. Ex. Hand wipes, cell, food, wallet, camera, dog poo bags, puppy treats, and more since I go everywhere with my puppy. But these days I kinda stop carrying into stores because the store's employees will actually follow me around. Every step I make they ask if I need help or fix a shelf that's close to me. While there is truly 10 people other people in the store but I have all the employees...

I hate shopping in the Sephora stores where I live (Malaysia) because the salespeople here have no sense of even basic customer service. Everytime I go to sephora I feel that the salespeople look down on me just cause I'm young, im not a tourist, and neither do I look rich. I was in Bloomingdales in New York & was with people from my class, then a woman who had previously been staring at us most of the time we were there, stormed up to me and the others and very rudely exclaimed "Can I help you!?" and my reply was "No, sorry" My friends, we then proceeded to walk off and shop in another section of the shop! Some people in retail can be really rude and snobby sometimes! So annoying! - I'm sure David's not though! :P Hope you like your new make up, after that fiasco!

I was in sephora once with my friends and we were trying out samples but we accidentally spilt some makeup remover on the floor and the lady there got so pissed at Ishtar she almost kicked us out and we were like jeez it was just an accident
