To those asking why the cameraman didn't do anything for that one guy: because he's not a lifeguard and trying to help someone who's panicking like that is a great way to get yourself killed. I once had to try to rescue my little brother when he went under in a pond when we were kids and he nearly drowned us both. My mother saw what was happening and sprinted over and saved us but when someone is drowning and scared, they don't care that you're trying to help them and can't calm down, and in the process they can hold you under. The cameraman knew the professionals were almost there with the appropriate gear and experience to help the guy. He would have made the situation worse by putting himself in jeopardy.

As a former lifeguard, often good Samaritans get themselves in trouble and end up as another casualty to rescue. Often a single rescue can become a massive event if someone who doesn't know what they're doing tries to rescue someone.

For people commenting about the cameramen not helping: A) They follow the lifeguards' lead, so footage is from when the lifeguard is right there B) It can actually be dangerous for a person without a flotation device to try to assist a person who is struggling (especially when they are panicking like this guy was). Instinct may make the patient want to use the person rescuing them as a flotation device and basically drown the rescuer.

There's only a handful of countries with tropical rainforest, temperate rainforest, mountains, desert, beaches, Kakadu, and the quality of life offered here. One of the things I really respect Terry for is his ability to talk calmly to people as he's picking them up, he can get the volume in his voice without there being any harshness is his voice. A calm tone of voice works as well on panicked people as it does on panicked animals (I say this as someone who both suffers from panic attacks, and also studies animal behaviour). For those with the knack, being able to keep your voice level in those high stress situations helps save lives (I'd be beyond useless in this, and very many other regards!) Fear is powerful, and every trick at your disposal to make people feel safe as quickly as possible is a powerful tool.

Apart from the whole “people who can’t swim going swimming” thing, I can’t get over the way that guy panicked. I’ve been in numerous emergency situations and just go cold and deal with it. You can always got to pieces later. When I was 16, my sister-in-law’s sister, who was much older than me, set fire to a tea towel by foolishly using it as a pot holder and touching it against the oven element. She ran around the kitchen in circles, screaming, holding a flaming tea towel whilst wearing a full skirt. My brother had to kind of wrestle it off her and throw in the sink while she continued freaking out. I learnt a valuable lesson that day: non panickers are lucky people.

One phone call and than 5 minutes later we found out they just stopped to get food lol

You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ☝🏼😌👍🏼!!! Those people are showing very disrespectfully a REALLY IRRESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR and it makes me angry to see how they risk their own lives AND the lives of OTHERS HELPING them...!!! And, by the way: what about the mental health of the bystanders (or families/friends) who have TO SEE & HEAR the panic of drowning people -or the actions of the rescue operations when people have to fight for their lives?!? For them, it's ALSO a trauma... A trauma, that such people like the Indian guys in this episode were KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY risking, just to have fun for (or please) themselves...!!!

I can swim, rather well actually yet the ocean scares the crap out of me just by seeing those huge waves! How could someone not knowing how to swim, be fine with them? Like my dad says “common sense doesn’t grow in everyone’s garden” lol if I was a lifeguard, rescued someone & heard them say “yeaaaa I don’t even know how to swim!” I wouldn’t be able to hold my tongue and go off on them. I really have to wonder about people going into obviously large surf, on a beach with multiple dangerous rip signs, who can't swim. What do they think is going to happen? Seeing the comments about the cameraman not helping... It looked pretty clear to me that he was helping? Like you can see from his own camera angle how close he was to him and then how he transferred him to the board.

The clip of the panicked swimmer should be played on flights from all landlocked countries with subtitles. They should also be told to listen to lifeguards like you'd listen to police.

Nah, I don't think that'll help. Very few people know how to calm themselves down during emergencies like these where your life is in immediate danger. It's always fight or fight in these situations, and when the instinct to survive kicks in, it's even more dangerous. Their minds would go blank and they'll be so focused on pulling and pushing to get themselves above the water, that they wouldn't even notice that they are drowning someone. The better solution would be to show them the clips and tell them not to go past knee deep when they don't know how to swim.

i was a single mom, going to beach in Long Beach, CA, little kids - guards would get on mic's saying,"sand throwing is a no no", hilarious, but my very young son - calls them "Right Guards". loved my little kids.

I learned to swim as a child, but haven't swam since then really, maybe 20 years. I feel like my natural inclination would not to be going in to the sea or even the deep end of a pool, because I am not sure swimming is like riding a bike... Thus I assume I can't still swim 😂 what makes people go in the sea when they can't swim?

The man that was panicking was really annoying. Like you see someone helping you, why would you keep in screaming for help?? Your on a board and your okay and you keep on yelling.

i was taught as a young child that if i cannot swim by myself i wouldnt be allowed to go anywhere near water leading to areas where i couldnt stand. it resulted in me being very motivated to learn to swim, ended up getting ABC's. then rescue swimming (with and without tools like a bodyboard and or floatation device) and then several years of diving practice. whilst i rarely would have to rescue someone where i live cause basic swimming lessons are mandatory its always handy to learn. you never know where you'll end up in life and what situations you'll end up in. wish they taught us more about rip currents and the like though

That's not a terrible Richie Benaud impression actually; man *the* voice of cricket, the game has never quite been the same without him. Sadly I was too young to have seen him play, but his ability to explain the game, and his impartiality in the commentary box was instrumental to my learning to love the sport.

People please, if you are not a VERY, VERY, VERY good swimmer, please don't go swimming in the ocean. If you just want to have fun and stay alive, just play near water not in the deep end that you can die.
