The Dark Knight and Se7en feature two of the most evil villains to ever appear on the big screen. Using these two characters, I explore the psychological factors behind acts of wickedness, which M. Scott Peck identifies in his book, People of the Lie. John Doe and The Joker may seem distant to us on a moral level, but they are both plagued by ideas that can corrupt even the most mundane individuals. In this analysis, I explain what those ideas are and how we can fight against them.

“Some men, aren’t after anything logical, like money. Some men…just want to watch the world burn.”-Alfred

It's funny, because in that instance? Alfred was the monster. A monster, a soldier of the British Empire working as his country's enforcement mechanism to uphold its iron grip on India. The bandit? He was the hero. He stole gems intended to buy the loyalty of warlords who would visit violence on the people in the name of greed, and refused to enrich himself on this blood price. And what did Alfred andhis men do to ensure British colonial hegemony? Burned down the entire forest the bandit operated out of. A forest full of life that no doubt provided food and resources for many. Alfred was the real monster.

It sounds like this John Doe was just being prideful. He saw himself as being above every one else. And because of that he ironically committed the sin of pride.

You're off about the nature of man. When you speak of people raising children, you used the appropriate word: "animalistic". Children doing bad things are operating from an animalistic perspective without consideration of good or bad, just the satisfaction of their own impulses. Your average grown adult doing bad things, particularly in modern times, is typically simply acting on impulse, not recognizing that they are forcing someone else to be a victim for their own advancement. I have a very similar worldview as what you have espoused here, but my position is that most people aren't evil in that they are not initiating aggression upon others, simply exploiting rules or taking shortcuts for the sake of their own comfort. While these things are often morally wrong or unethical, they don't rise to the level of "evil" unless someone is going out of their way to directly take from or harm another. People want a dichotomy for human behavior, good or evil, but human behavior is a trinity in that the majority of people are animalistically neutral. Death and decay aren't inherently evil, either. Entropy is necessary for growth and development.

This is a worldview that I generally lean more towards, but also acknowledge that it can be refined on some levels.

Awesome choice, and usage, of quotes! Both of these movies left me, somewhat, stunned, as I left the theater. Feeling equal parts exhilaration (the performances, the writing, the artistic choices) and disturbance (the tone, the endings: one's story, the other's real-life costar). They remain two of my favorite's, with Se7en holding a sentimental spot; given that I was 16, and it was the first "R" rated movie I watched in the theater, by myself. The nuance of Ledger's performance... it has been very well covered, and I can't add anything new. Just that I was blown away, seeing it myself for the first time. The squints, the tongue, the way he dazedly walked and fired the assault rifle; after crawling out of his flipped truck... I wanted to give him a standing O.

If John Doe were a real person he would scapegoat Trump for all the evil in the world. I'm glad no one actually does that.

As long as there is choice, there will be good and evil. Some people have morals, they want to help others. Some people believe morals are for suckers. Our choices may have some strong influences one way or the other, but ultimately, we choose.

John Doe's evil stemmed from faulty theology and pride. He forgot the line from the Old Testament: vengeance is mine, says the Lord. I find too many people who read the bible and only take what they like, and ignore what they don't.

Hello and thankyou for your most excellent, groovy and deadly, video review's! Thiis one is very neatly done and appreciated! You asked some time ago for reccomendations of foriegn films and I immediately thought of Shipenko"s award winning 'Salyut 7' (Russia 2017). I eagerly followed the historic events via brief news clips and spaceflight magazine subscriptions at the time (in 1985 Sydney Australia). I always think about the cool undistractable enthusiasm of Vladimir as he commits his Soyuz and himself totally to nailing the incredible docking he made with Salut 7 - all while his engineer Viktor loses his cool (which did not happen in real life). The film gave the sense of heroic intrepidness that this crew showed, as well as the national inportance of saving one of the most expensive and valued investments that Russia had ever made! Cosmonaut Director Klim Shipenko has just flown by Soyuz to Salut 7's grandchild the ISS to film The Callenge, and a review here would undougtedly segway neatly into the undougtedly even greater Western critical success of The Challenge. Could I reccomend also Monty Pythons Life of Brian? It came out the same year as Apocalypse Now and I would value your take on a movie that rocked the Anglican Church, and delighted a generation of the British Commonweallth!

I would like to put forward something with a Christian perspective to this analysis, which I might add I find very good. Keep up your good work! The reason why characters like Joker and John Doe are such compelling characters is because they are projecting very well the mind and motives or, character of Satan. The characters theme is taken (knowingly or unknowingly I don't know) straight from the book of Job in the bible, where you can read Satan's interaction with God about Job. Satan's whole angle is that the only reason why Job worships God and fears Him is because God keeps Him safe by protecting him and comforting him with the material and relational. This in essence is also the same conversation Joker has with Batman in the interrogation room. Job eventually loses all of those "comforts" including his health, but still does not stop worshiping God but something is revealed about Job that is truly evil. That evil is the belief that one can justify himself before God through their own "good" works and not via God's effort to justify him through faith in Him. Here is where the movies and the bible separate. Batman fights because he believes that people have an inherent "goodness" inside and that goodness needs; time, grace, encouragement, nurture and the opportunity to come out. Jesus puts a clear axe to that perspective when He says '"If you being evil know how to give good gifts..."' is a direct statement that people are evil in nature regardless of what good works, actions or gifts they do. If you really want a simple definition of what evil is then here it is...anything that does not meet God's standard, which is perfection. You state that even in the natural world it is evident that life goes on through the death of other things and I absolutely agree and I would go one step further. You sir have stumbled on the absolute biblical truth that Jesus died so that we (sinners) might have life. You state and even in the comments people state, that real evil is the refusal to stop and even consider that what you are doing is evil. This IS at the very heart of Jesus' message to His creation (all people). This is the truth of what sends people to hell for all of eternity, your refusal to accept that from God's perspective you are evil (sinner) and that you refuse to consider that God has provided and answer for you but you would rather ignore God or try to justify yourself through the lie of I'll do it myself or I know better. I will go even one step further. If you want the greatest challenge in your life...consider for a moment that your are that very Joker or John Doe in God's eyes. What is your response? Denial...acceptance...refusal to consider? Anyways, I really love your channel and I very, very rarely post anything in the comments section but this was so thought provoking that I wanted to respond, which is a credit to the quality of work you do here.

I appreciate the response, and I'm glad you liked the video. I agree with most of what you are saying (I am also a Christian). On the topic of something be evil because it "does not meet God's standard," you are getting pretty close to the discussion of Plato's Euthyphro. Where someone argues that something is good because God (or in this case the gods) declare it's good. That's the divine command theory. I gravitate towards the idea, but I think the arguments made against it by Socrates are difficult to counter. It may not change your view, but I think it's worth reading. And personally, I do think God sees differences between those who accept evil and those who try hard to reject it. We are all sinners of course and all fall short, but I wouldn't accept that God sees a person who strives hard to be good the same as Ted Bundy. Although, I understand what you mean. We should be hesitant to judge others, just as John does of course.

Yes but...we know that narcissism isn't just something that's inherited and in the end the Joker, John Doe, Hitler etc. are extreme narcissists. They developed their narcissism in the matrix of their early family relations. In this sense they didn't choose their personalities, and fate or whatever one cares to call it made it far harder for these people to do good than for others more fortunate in their family of origin. The other thing is that as bad as these people are historically speaking it hasn't been the lone serial killer type that has caused so much destruction and mayhem in the world but those who are the exact opposite, the conformist fanatical followers. Often these people seem quite pleasant, they would be described as being quite nice in their everyday dealings but give them a cause to follow, an idolized leader to tell them what to think and what to obey, someone to whom they can give up their sense of personal responsibility to, and they will think and do what their told, and often enough that will eventuate in them being able to express the side of themselves that they keep under wraps, even from themselves, as they rampage and murder those who are viewed by them as being evil, the outsider, the subhuman etc. Both Erich Fromm and Arthur Koestler have made these points about the latter group. Other than that I enjoyed the video and your talk about evil as described by Scott Peck.

Author, if you are really interested in nature and inner mechanics of good and evil, there is one very special (for me at least) book: Spinoza's Ethics. It is distinguished by very complex and, at once, rather primitive style because of what, to read that through (and to understand) will take a lot of time, but it is a precious experience. Though, it will be much easier if you have some programming skills (even rudimentary(as in my case )), for it's structure is very reminiscent of computer program.
