I think the real heroes of the shows were Hank and Howard. They were the literal antithesis of both antiheroes. Through the arc of Breaking Bad, we realize that Hank, as blunt and cringy as he was, was a far better man than Walter. Countless times we see Walter tremble, shake and fumble around when dangerous events take place. We witness Hank in two different gunfights. In each one he is incredibly aggressive, decisive, tough and quick-thinking. Through the arc of Better Call Saul, we realize that Howard, as slick and too-perfect as he was, was far more ethical and selfless than Jimmy was. We find out he was just an all around awesome guy who often used the position and riches he had to better the people around him. Both of these characters were doomed. I suspect so the death of what the anti-heroes could and should have been, would impact us more. It was masterful story telling. We start off despising Hank and Howard because of the "surface" the writers show us. As we watch the antiheroes gradually decline, we also are shown gradually shown how great Hank and Howard are. As we realize the guys we were routing for are actually detestable people, we also realize how amazing Hank and Howard are. The primary characters who represent the Good are killed brutally right at the zenith of of their character development. At that point, as far as the eye can see, no one truly good is left. Only THEN do we watch both antiheroes make their final decent into evilness. It is not an exaggeration to say this stuff is Shakespeare-level story telling. Absolutely superb. You will find nothing superior to this.

Jimmy McGill and Walter White are characters who could have done so much good with their skills and at times they did, particularly Jimmy, but then there were the times they couldn’t help themselves and indulged in the part of themselves that just blow up a great thing they have going, whether it was intentional or not. Hey man, love your videos and how you analyze media! Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are two of my favorite shows and the more I think about it, rewatch it or hear what others say about the two shows, makes me discover some new missed detail or interpretation! One thing that I noticed in your video that seems a bit odd, are your zoom transitions. I like them, but I think they would work better with some sort of sfx/music or a bit of a slower fade transition. But other than that, great video! Can't wait until the next one :D

8:05 Walters insecurities, from what i remember, are related to Elliot's wife. She and Walter used to date as we can see on the flashbacks of some episodes, but they broke up due to Walter feeling inferior to her, since she came from a wealthy family and was very bright, while Walter was poor and came from a not so wealthy family. That's why he ended up marrying Skyler, she was less succesful than him, wasn't as bright as him and was way younger in comparison. You can see some glimpses of this when He and Elliot's wife are in the restaurant and he throws at her the F bomb.

Dying with any sort of grace is so much more difficult than most people seem to understand. It’s not the movies. Almost everyone can’t do it. Sudden deaths and hospitalization make it a lot harder to see… but most people cannot die gracefully. And some people will die without certain people in their lives. Both are stories of dying men who simply do not die gracefully.

I think something that links both of their motivations to do bad is also just passion for the job. Even besides the money, they both do their respective crimes because they love doing it. Jimmy gets a very financially secure law job with Davis and Maine and immediately throws it away, and later gets his massive settlement from the Sandpiper case. Walt gets an offer to have all his bills paid, and makes 6 figures in one weekend of meth cooking early in the show that would see his family safe even if he did die. But neither of them really cared about the money. Jimmy just can't help pulling scams, it's an art to him. It would be like telling Miles Davis he can't play trumpet again. Walt similarly just loves cooking meth. For both of them, it's something they're really good at, and it gives them the kind of ego boost and sense of power they never get from living their lives straight.

For me I'm not convinced Walt cared about Jesse on that level. Walt is an extreme narcissist so his only interest was his pride in his meth work. Which is why he reacted in anger in learning Jesse was cooking again. He did however have a change of heart but that also was more about Walt than helping Jesse. He wanted to be on good terms with Jesse, but it was always in a paternalistic, Walt knows best for Jesse-toxic manner of concern. Walt reveals this at the end. He just wanted to do and be the best at something. That's all that ever mattered to him. Narcissists have this problem of viewing their victims as a extension of them personally, their victims don't have personal autonomy in their mind. Walt's family, also his victims, don't have the same autonomy which is why To'hajiilee is so amazing, it all blows up. So Walt's seeming concern for Jesse, rescuing him at the end is again not about Jesse, it's about Walt.

Just a suggestion. Your video has way too many cutaways to film footage. I know you're trying to be funny with it but it makes your entire script hard to follow.

I always thought the initial meaning anyway of "Breaking Bad" is implying Walt got a 'bad lot of cards' in life. He 'broke' bad. But we know Walt is the author of his own misfortunes. He lost opportunities in life because of his personality flaws. He lost Billions because he was a push-over and failed to see the value in his work. He lost Gretchen because he felt inferior to her. He lost his family because he choose to cook meth.

I am like Saul, I talk my way to things and out. It's all I ever had, I do not like to lie and my morals stop me. Yet it's so easy to do so. It flows like poetry or like a speech like a presentation or like an order. My insides still feel the same, constricticting, pulling everything, sucking everything to remind myself of my morals. But how else would I Survive?

While we are all responsible for our own choices , let's not ignore the influence two critical moments had on each character. Walter , gets cancer and Skylar without any thought to the cost etc pushes him to get treatment. Very expensive treatment . Leaving Walter hanging with the how do I pay for all this. Granted he should have swallowed his pride and took Elliots offer but Skylar is far from blameless. Jimmy , if Chuck had spent more time embedding a moral compas and as a roll model instead of keeping his boot on Jimmy's throat , he might have had a full redemption arc . If you tell someone to straighten up then oppress them so they can't succeed you are sabatoging your efforts of reformation .

Walter broke bad due to his life circumstances and his anger. Jimmy broke bad because it was in his nature. He could’ve had two equally lucrative roads to go down, one legal and one illegal, and he would have felt compelled to chose the illegal one every time.

And viewers confused what they wanted to see with what was actually happening..both are top ten shows of all time and both crumbled under their own weight of expectation at the end.
