What is this weird Stave Church? - VANLIFE NORWAY

Life is too short

Жыл бұрын

This episode was filmed 20th September 2022.
After two peaceful nights at our park up by the river it is time to move on.
Our first stop today is the historic Heddal stave church, dating back to around 1200.
It is soon time to get back on the road and we set off towards Rjukan, making our way over the mountain range.
We find a perfect spot to pull in for lunch but do we have any food left?
We make our way down into Rjukan through a series of hairpin bends and head straight for the Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum at the hydroelectric plant.
After refuelling and stocking up with food we find somewhere to spend the night and Carol cooks a chilli.

The little buildings raised up from the ground are called "stabbur". It was where people used to hang meat to dry and cure, and it was also used to store other foods like grains and fruit back in the days.

Let's also spare a thought for the British commandos who made the first attempt at destroying the hydro plant, all of whom died, and all of whom are buried in Norway as far as I can read on Wikipedia. There were actually three operations: * Operation Grouse -- the reconnaissance mission to figure out the best way to attack * Operation Freshman -- the UK mission which failed and whose members all died * Operation Gunnerside -- the Norwegian mission, launched from the UK, which eventually succeeded After Gunnerside, repairs were made and the plant resumed heavy water production, but due to being bombed in later air raids, the amount of heavy water was fairly low.

@@LifeistooshortCK Not sure if KZfaq allows Wikipedia links, but these are quite well-written: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_heavy_water_sabotage en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Freshman I think it's also quite interesting, the physics of why heavy water was seen as important in the first place. There are several paths that lead to a nuclear weapon, and only some of them involve heavy water.

Hi again. I live in Hokksund with my wife and often take visitors on a round trip up Numedal and over the mountains to Rauland then south to Skien the back home. One time we were driving back home and saw there was a wedding going on in Heddal Stavkirke so we stopped in so that our visitors could get good pictures of the wedding party in traditional dress. It turned out that it was family to our neighbors who were getting married. We have also been to concerts with traditional song in the church.

many of the tourist cabins in the mountains don’t have a possibility for having a snowmobile or a car to get to it so delivery is done by helicopter usually two or four times a year. At Norway’s highes point , Galdhøpiggen, that is a tourist cabin that is open all year, and they often needs delivery since it’s the most traveled tourist cabin in Norway, I think. To rent one helicopter cost about 30,000 an hour. So if people sometimes are surprised of the prices at those places, they really don’t consider the delivery cost.

At Rukan they produced: "Heavy water" looks like water, but is probably 10 percent heavier. Ordinary water (H2O) has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. In heavy water (D2O) there are deuterons instead of hydrogen, and while ordinary hydrogen has one proton in its atomic nucleus, deuterons have both one proton and one neutron. This makes it heavier. Heavy water is used in nuclear reactors, as a moderator to slow down the neutrons so that they get the right speed, but also as a heat exchange medium. Spent heavy water from reactors is somewhat radioactive due to the formation of tritium.

You should come back in the winter. Fit winter tires and do as Ken mentioned in the Q&A. Go to the arctic circle. If you watch Harrys garage here on YT you'll see him taking an old Rolls-Royce to the arctic circle in the winter, so if he can it should be no problem in a front wheel drive NV200. You also get the chance to see the northern lights. Love from Norway.

Hari OM Heroes of Telemark is one of my all-time favourite movies; just a little dated from a production point of view these days, but as you rightly say, it kept pretty accurately to historical fact - what could not always be said for films made at that time! So sorry you couldn't get into the waterworks - for our sake too! Loved seeing inside the stave church, though; had seen photos of the exterior many times, but don't recall ever seeing interior before now. Crikey, though... that grocery bill...😨 YAM xx

I find the history of WWII so interesting. I've recently discovered my mother lived near a prisoner of war camp in Sister Bay when she was small. Which is located in the Door Peninsula of Wisconsin. I've been told a lot of them choose to stay after the war. Crazy!

another great blog, what were the thin poles at an angle on some of the road?

The poles are to mark the edge of the road when it is covered in snow.

Lynn here on Hubby's phone 😏, WOW this must be the longest set of videos you've done is it ? We're enjoying it tho 😊👍, tell me will you be doing any more day out videos or maybe just one night stay videos ? The reason I ask is we are debating on getting a small van , but with my Arthritis will only perhaps be able to manage one nighters , so it would be lovely to watch you on smaller travels , hope you don't mind me asking 🤔, Thanks Ken and Carol 😊, loving your vids , Take Care xx

I think our longest series was North Wales and Anglesey - 26 videos. After Norway we will be posting a 3 night trip in the UK which we hope you will enjoy 🙂

Rjukan is better to say if you drop the "j" :) I'm not sure we even pronounce the "j".

If I knew you were coming, I would invided you for a cup of coffee on our terrace. You passed close by it :-) As for the deserted town, basically you were out of season. In July very different...

Yes the stave churches are certainly unique in design. We had not seen anything like them before. This one was built from Scots Pine. Finding park ups wasn’t too hard and we had a few really good ones. The scenery is amazing. Good to hear from you 🙂👍

Fabulous... The Church was amazing and I appreciate the google maps & history. My only "complaint".... "Coming up Trumps" has a different mindset for Americans..... Let's think of a new phrase. PLEASE!!!!

The first film made about the sabotage had three of the original men playing them self. They were not satisfied with the Hollywood interpretation, as it was not as accurate..

I have no idea it cost money to look at this church?? i am norwegian and would never axept any payment to look at it never it is so bad! it cost as i se 150 kr lol, the norwegian goverment pay to hold this in chape so this is a scam after what i se! Or the payment go for the guided tour then it cost but se the church by your self should be free no cost, it is up to you!

Regarding the heroes of Telemark, there has been made a series about the sabotage. It is a co-production between and both Norwegian, English, Danis and German is spoken. It's pretty accurate (excpt for some silly romantical sub-plot the director idiotically had to impress on an othervise very well made series) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Heavy_Water_War

For anyone interested in the sabotage of the plant at Rjuken in WW2 I’d highly recommend ‘Hunting the Nazi Bomb’ by Damien Lewis which examines the various attempts to destroy the plant but reads like a novel and will leave you staggered at the sheer heroism of the Norwegian men who finally took on the mission and perhaps saved the world!
