Your point about association/dissociation is important. Anchoring is about way more than pleasure and pain. You can anchor modalities, energy levels, others' presence, and the states you're talking about creating here, too. The states don't have to be all-in-one to motivated/productive. One can use sequences for different "recipes."

Thank you. You are correct that anchoring can be used for more than pleasure and pain. From its inception it was intended to bring you to a more resourceful state (a more aware state where you have easier access to internal resources) and it can work. I just don't find it nearly as reliable as identity level changes that are more stable than states and when done well also helps to stabilize resourceful states.

Hi Damon, I am an NLP Practitioner and I totally got everything you said about anchoring. I myself do like anchoring...but on other people, and whilst I use this a lot I also use the self identity boosters, without even realising it. As a Mother and Grandmother, like most people, have gone through many emotional ups and downs, and with age you do get wiser. Now through just my own experiences I install, self esteem and confidence into other people. An example of this, was a friend who was told 5 years ago that she had 8 weeks to live, but here she is 5 years on and cured. Right after being told the cancer had gone she couldn't accept it and was extremely depressed. This is a case of having a program installed by the doctor at the height of probably the worst emotion going and it had been anchored there. Over a few weeks of having coffees and talking, and installing new ideas and concepts, especially as to the incompetence of saying such a shocking thing, when clearly the doctor had not explored all avenues of handling my friend's situation, she began to gradually lift out of the depression, ground herself in the program of new concepts, and has started to see a future, that she thought she never had. She is like a transformed person, more confident, brighter, less nervous than she was before. She now sees herself less like a victim with no choices and more like a warrior who has fought off the enemy and gone on to create a greater, more evolved existence. I feel proud of myself for that as up until our meetings she was stuck in abject misery. I am a very empathetic and spiritual person and I have always felt other people's pain, at one time when I was young I couldn't switch it off and it can drain and exhaust you, even make you ill, but over the years I have learnt to disocciate from it in order to treat the person with precision whilst remaining strong myself, but still connected with sympathy. I feel much of my NLP has been taught prior to my qualification in the actual subject through my own life struggles. I suppose I learnt the hard way. I find many good coaches and therapists are those who have very often suffered with emotional issues themselves. Thanks for this video Damon x

You're welcome. Thank you for the kind words. I agree with you that many of us find ourselves as coaches and teachers through transforming our own suffering first. What you explained about your friend's situation and how the doctor anchored in a non-useful way of thinking about her situation, I don't think that was an anchor. This is a big discussion, but I will say that his authority likely influenced her to categorize her situation a certain way that was limiting. Anchors are state based. His words may have influenced her state at that moment but even if he had anchored a state, as soon as she left his office that state would likely have passed. A categorization, however, especially at the identity level would have stayed with her until she changed the category. You can replace my use of the word category with the word belief in this situation.
@Venus77x

@@DamonCart I think from what I already know about my friend and her thinking processes, was that the doctor probably reinforced her quite negative thinking, that she had before the diagnosis, and to be told such tragic news really put the tin lid on it. I agree probably the trust we invest in doctors made her take his words onboard without question. It's difficult to shift a destructive belief if it's part of someone's negative personality, it's also important to question everything and everyone, and not to follow blindly, because even highly qualified experts can be wrong. I'm just glad she's in a better place in her head than she was x

Thanks for this! Very helpful distinction! 🙏 I use anchoring to more intentionality engage the natural moments of anchoring we all use throughout the day. Like not doing work in my bed to avoid associating that state with settled sleep-time. But rather than using it therapeutically, it’s more of a way to understand the natural tendencies of the mind-body. Also, during lectures I use certain gestures mindfully to more strongly emphasize important aspects to students. An area that I gesture for positive vs negative, etc. Seems helpful! As an acupuncturist, I also tend to generate anchors over time to help relax and prepare clients for treatment. Again, more useful in a moment to moment basis rather than long term conditioning.

You are absolutely right. Traditional conditioning sometimes feels a bit like trying to program a computer or a machine. Moreover, in cases such as the ones you mention in the video, resorting to the pleasure/pain duality can be ineffective or worse, it can reinforce trauma. On the other hand, the approach you suggest is deeply transformational and quite similar to concepts from some spiritual paths. Thank you for the video!

In my opinion it all comes down to being in the natural flow instead of over rationalizing anchors to find the "willpower and motivation" pot. I do think some anchoring has its uses, for example NBA players leaving their hands up even after making the foul shot. It's also important to discern when anchors become a crutch and patterns of overthinking happen when you're not getting the result you want - great video just subscribed.

I have an anchor given to me by my mentor at times my body will feel anxious. The anchor within seconds sends my body the blueprint of what is like to be relaxed and it follows the direction, but for mental change I agree self concept would be a much more useful tool. The moment I accept the discomfort Instead of resist it, I can change it, that self concept of being in control really helps me to use my anchor effectively.

There are so many origin stories about anchoring from Bandler's blues guitar playing to Erickson's post hypnotic suggestions, there's also ideas in orthodox psychology such as Erwin Guthrie's "One=shot learning" & Tholman's "Latent learning". With your point about confidence & giving a talk, wasn't the technique of Bridging developed to connect an anchor with a specific situation. Also what do you know about accelerated & multi-accelerated anchors John McWhirter gave a lecture about them at an ANLP conference I think in the 90's

Hi Damon, Installing qualities into your identity instead of triggering states by firing anchors really resonates with me. Out of curiosity... How would that fit in the example you mentioned in the video about giving a talk? You feel nervous and want to feel more confidence. Feeling confident is a state that you can anchor. So you fire the anchor before giving the talk and you feel more confident but that wears down. So you fire that anchor again but the the state of feeling confident has become less powerful. Feeling nervous and feeling confident seem like different states to me. And both can result in different outcomes. I can imagine the talk going much better in a state of confidence than in a state of nervousness. So how would installing qualities solve a problem like this? Is it possible to install qualities into your identity that would automatically generate the desired state when needed? So for instance, when a golf player has got the most talent and practice he needs to become world number one and he needs a state of focus, energy, sharpness, confidence and flow so that he can strike the ball the best he can everytime, is that something that can be achieved without anchoring states and just by installing qualities? (Edited a typo.)
@DamonCart
@DamonCart 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. If the golfer feels certain that he is a focused, energetic, and sharp person, the confidence will follow. Confidence is not a quality of identity. Confidence (and self-esteem) is the result of feeling certain about possessing qualities that you value. You can't go at confidence directly. You can try to fake it but that usually creates more problems than it solves.
@hashimnaushahi
@hashimnaushahi 3 жыл бұрын
@@DamonCart Thank you so much for this answer! Especially this: "Confidence (and self-esteem) is the result of feeling certain about possessing qualities that you value." And I'm guessing that the Self Concept Model can assist someone in becoming certain about such qualities. Could it also work for people who value qualities they feel they don't possess sufficiently due to past experiences or negative beliefs about themselves? If so, the Self Concept Model is even more powerful than I first imagined. So what would you recommend as a good way to learn the Self Concept Model so that I can use it in the best possible ways for my clients?

Good day Damon Quality Explanation and a fantastic fractionation demonstration ANCHORS IMO a conditioned response They can be useful for Other things also Not just for emotions Because all feelings and sensations Are Kinesthetics Emotions are just Labels The most powerful way to install an Anchor Is to go into a self-directed Trance state first You cannot anchor a state if there is too much conscious interference Unless you set up the context first then you can bulldoze through the block walls Going into the state first and feeling it it’s just intention The cause and effect pattern The Pygmalion effect I use Anchors to go into Trance First Then I use the Trance State to Amplify the State And my Anchor that I use every time is Eye Lock and I know the Anchor has Triggered off the State Because I actually feel a clicking sensation in both of my eyes simultaneously And you know you are locked in The other person cannot break this Gaze even If they wanted to because it’s euphoric But because you’ve already entered an uplifting state That state is shining out through my eyes and the other person is frozen in time and space For a few seconds Reframes context reframe content reframe Cause and effect awareness Expectations Intentions Pygmalion effect turn up the juice And Practice start with the end in mind what are your desires Know what you want This Will create POWERFUL TRIGGERS YOU JUST CHOOSE HOW YOU FEEL a behaviour is more Powerful than an Emotional State The Imagination is where Magic Happens

I'm wondering if anchors work better on Kinesthetics if it's a touch and sound, whereas maybe visuals need to look at a visual object that could be a thumb, finger, etc ( something that's always with them), and an auditory needs the sound - a snap, tongue click, etc. Curious of there is a correlation.
@DamonCart
@DamonCart 2 жыл бұрын
Kinesthetic touch is usually more powerful than visual anchors even in visual people. Touch involves more of the nervous system. Smells are probably the strongest though, but not very practical for setting anchors. All of the things you mention can all be used. Instead of focusing on the best though, I would focus on layering two like a touch and a sound or a touch and an eyebrow lift that the person you're anchoring will see. Combining two modalities for anchors is very powerful.

You can take a state you want to anchor like playfulness and use the Self-Concept Model to transform it into a quality of who you are. Having it as a quality of who you are makes it far more stable than a state. States come and go. Aspects of who you are go with you everywhere and you have access to them whenever you want without having to rely on an anchor.

Agreed! The crux is Anchoring takes place on an unconscious level, all allergic and phobic patients have external triggers (anchors) to give them that unfavourable state And can be collapsed by some trained NLP therapist. Hence as you said self-anchoring infact alters the state because we are consciously finding away or pushing us to enter unconscious (i.e.state) which doesn't work well. So yes anchoring self is sort of outdated but collapsing anchors still work much well for patients of allergy etc (which has external trigger i.e. anchor) provided carried by some other. Working on a deeper level is mature concept taken from stoicism & philosophy.Its all about the mature understanding of self.

Collapsing anchors has its uses but I've not seen it used effectively in deep change work especially at the identity level. It can certainly aid in those processes, but it takes more than just collapsing anchors.

@@DamonCart That's my bad,I wasn't able to clear my point.. I think identity is the core process of finding uniqueness of your being (who you are) and it requires deep deliberation ( a conscious questioning process) Whereas psychological problems like phobia,etc occurs below identity level and it's more unconscious (where external stimuli automatically triggers state) where collapsing anchor can be useful provided carried by some others.There's no use of collapsing anchors at identity level because Identity finding is a mature questioning process of self.

Tony and I wouldn't agree on a lot of things. Classical conditioning, which is what Tony is really using, can work, but usually only short term. Even with taming animals, cultivating a relationship with them is far more effective than conditioning them with pleasure and pain.

I have a severe stutter... but when I say ok right now I'm badass m@daf@kas charismatic, persuasive and great guy... it takes me a few seconds to reach that level and all the other lower level qualities dissappear... And little by little I'm becoming that and don't need to act or boost it... it's just easier

Anchor is not the only way we can be confident on stage or it is not the only reason you got nervous on stage . We shall place our concious awareness to others not on ourselfs, And all these nlp techniques are just telling us what to do or not to do , but when you are taking action we need to have intuition power to drive us

@@nitishgautam5420 okay but you used it and I'm asking you what do you mean by it? If you can't explain it, you don't know it well enough. You're just saying words.

@@DamonCart 😄 sir I can explain it ... But this is not a platform for it you already know words are only 7%. That's why I mentioned about Sadhguru ...There is his video on KZfaq. But in my words intuitions is the ability of your subconscious calculation not just mathematics, it can do many thing at once but our concious mind can't .. My analogy is When we learnt how to catch no one taught us the mathematics of calculation, physics of parabola and how to move certain body part / muscle... With perfect timing but just by doing practice we learnt it ... Because subconscious is way faster ,. Complex then concious level ... It Just that we are not conscious of these thousands of calculations happening at once other wise would have became mad

@@DamonCart that's why I said intuition power drive us because once we practiced each NLP techniques then we don't need to think about everything deeply our subconscious mind will take care of it 😄

Did I just watch a 15min ad; if not then I must have missed the part where he said HOW to do the installations.
@DamonCart
@DamonCart 3 жыл бұрын
No you watched a free video where I question the effectiveness of anchoring in favor of installing the qualities rather than the states. To learn how to install a quality will take more time than a 15 minute KZfaq video, a lot of practice, and investment of money with a teacher who has mastered the model.

I understand that you won’t be put sell your ideas but you shouldn’t kill basic technique of NLP, like anchoring ! Instead you should have talked about your concept more than anchoring not working
@DamonCart

I didn't kill anything. Anchoring is still around. I've talked about Self-Concept in many videos. Anchoring is fine, but there are many, much better techniques.
