Күн бұрын

In this delightful short film, Jackie shares her experience of getting an English Springer Spaniel puppy, and how Dolly the dog has changed her life. She discusses the temperament of this breed, and tells us why to get an English Springer Spaniel.
When Jackie first contemplated owning a dog, she asked her friends for recommendations for breeds, and did some online research. Her criteria was for a breed that had a reputation for being good companions, intelligent, and energetic.
When Dolly first arrived, Jackie felt a bit overwhelmed. Puppyhood can be a testing time, especially for the first time owner. She found that taking Dolly to puppy socialisation classes, and then some gun dog training classes, was a huge help. English Springer Spaniels are intelligent dogs that like to feel busy and useful. Learning how to train Dolly to respond to whistle commands was fun, and made their walks together safer and more collaborative. Jackie has recorded some other videos for Life The Basic Manual on how to achieve this, please check out this link for more goo.gl/5P1gWd
Dolly is happy with two walks a day, and loves being in human company. She’s not that interested in other dogs when walking, reducing the need to control encounters with strange dogs. She enjoys following a scent, and picking up an attractive stick. Her coat is relatively easy to groom and care for, and she doesn’t moult heavily. Jackie made sure that Dolly got used to young children early in her life, and Dolly very patient with kids, although Jackie makes sure she always supervises contact.
The most important qualities that Dolly brings to Jackie’s home is that she is loving, loyal and affectionate. Jackie and her husband have had many hours of fun and laughter in her company, and they are fitter and happier for owning an English Springer Spaniel.
This delightful, good-tempered, smart and people-orientated breed can bring delight to any owner who is prepared to put the necessary time and effort into training and caring for them.
So why should you get an English Springer Spaniel? Because they are a wonderful breed that can add a note of real joy into your life.

I lost my Springer Buster today. I called him, "The child I never had." He was my baby and I am going to miss him so much. But now, this once hyper-energetic but adorable boy has gone to his well-earned rest. I thank God for the loan of this gift that I have now just handed back to Him. Sleep well my faithful companion! Daddy will always love you!

@@LifeTheBasicManual Thank you for your kind words xxx ps Dolly is a Gem and looks like my boy Buster in features when he was younger. In fact, many dog owners used to say to me that Buster is too pretty to be a boy. I just proudly viewed him as one handsome and amiable lad who like all Springers sought to please their masters.

"If this is the dog for you, you will NEVER get another breed. I promise you that." Truer words have never been spoken. I got my first Springer (I was a first-time dog owner too) back in 2006 from a neighbour (for whom the challenge of the dog's energy was just too much to handle), and you're right, as soon as you start getting them to DO things, training and working and learning, they latch on to that and it feeds something that they seem to need. So instead of putting their energy into annoying and bad behaviors, they are putting it into other, more interesting and appropriate things. He had the drive and energy of a puppy well into his 8th year (although the naps got longer), and even in his last months, in 2017, before he got sick (I had him euthanized this January), he was extremely eager and ready to go and could still run laps around me with ease (he was 12 when he got sick). He was my first dog, and confronting his illness, dealing with it, slowly coming to realize that there was nothing I could do about it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I drove him 500 miles to a city with a proper veterinary school with excellent facilities to see if they could help him (they diagnosed him with esophageal and pharyngeal cancer of his epithelial cells, which was preventing him from swallowing properly). I considered having a tube inserted into his stomach so he could get food another way...but slowly I realized that this would almost certainly be against his interests. He wasn't suffering much physically yet from the cancer (though the mental suffering was probably horrid - nothing appealed to him in life more than eating, which he was barely able to do anymore). Why prolongue his life so that the disease that was starting to starve him would also cause more direct pain, leading to death anyways, except for selfish reasons of being unable to imagine the alternative? Still, to decide to take direct action to end the life of a true member of your family...it FEELS wrong. It was absolutely the right choice (and I probably should have made it a couple weeks earlier than I did), but that last drive to the vet, those last minutes...it felt like I was betraying my best friend. My advice to anyone who hasn't gone through this yet is to never take your dog for granted, enjoy every minute with them, and try to prepare for what their death will look and feel like. That's a hard thing to imagine, but as someone who could have been better prepared, having to make the hard decisions, having to put your dog's interests over your own...I wish I had thought about it at least a bit before I was put into a situation that was spiralling out of control and my actions (or lack thereof) had major consequences. If there's one bad thing about Springers it's that they have shorter lifespans than other breeds, and certainly than most mutts. 10-11 years is about the average. My dog was lucky to get an extra year, and I had thought for sure he had more than that in him...plenty of time to think about and prepare for his inevitable death. I always thought he'd be the 15-year-old exception to the rule. That was a mistake, and I think we both had a worse time of it because of my lack of forethought. Still, after a couple of months had passed, I was emotionally in a better place. The joy he brought to my life for over 11 years far outweighed the crippling heartache of a few weeks. For some people, that calculus works out the other way - the pain and despondency they feel when their dog is dying is so traumatic that they become a one-time pet owner. I still miss him every day, but I was ready for another challenge, another Springer with a different personality that I would be privileged to get to know. It's been about 5 weeks since I got my new dog, and I know I made the right choice. He's perfect. Even when he has accidents in the house. Even when he's trying to eat rocks in the garden, and chewing on every thing imaginable (teething!). These dogs are FUN. And having been through everything before means I know roughly how to train him, and how patient I'll need to be, and how much time I need to spend letting him expend all of his energy, etc. Thanks for your video, and for spreading the gospel of the English Springer Spaniel to the masses. Where I live, there really aren't any Springers except for mine and it was really hard to find a reputable, registered breeder (the one I eventually chose was a seven-hour drive away, in another COUNTRY). If more people knew just how affectionate, loyal, intelligent and steady these dogs are, I think they'd be far more popular. Enjoy your time with Dolly - she's gorgeous.

Just went through this one month ago today. Amazing all the guilt and grief you feel at losing a friend like this. I’ve had many dogs but never got so close to my last one. It amazes me how lightly some people take life. Going through this has been eye-opening. Thank you, Jordy, for all the joy you gave me. You were always worth it, and more. I hope I was. Bless everyone who loves their dogs. Grief and joy continue ... for now.

I saw an advert for an English Springer Spaniel puppy at almost the exact time you posted this video. I'd fallen in love with her from her photo, but I wanted to do research into the breed as it was my first experience of having a dog on my own. Your video was honestly the confirmation I needed that I was making the right decision. I found your detail, personal experience and footage in this video so helpful. It is now three months on and my English Springer Spaniel, Bonnie, is the light of my life. She has the most wonderful temperament and personality, just like your Dolly but in puppy form still. I am a total dog lover and didn't realise it was possible to fall so ridiculously in love with one type of breed until I got Bonnie, so you were absolutely right with your closing statement: having her, this breed has stolen my heart. Thank you for this video and the help it gave me to bring Bonnie into my life

I've had springers for 48 years. One of the most versatile breeds to be had. Recently, I lost my male Springer named Napoleon. He was in my life literally from the moment he came into this world. His mother, Serendipity, was a fabulous dog. She left me 3 years ago. 2 weeks ago I lost Napoleon and I have been devastated. It was 11 days before his 14th birthday. Greatest bird dog I have ever owned, best Friend and Companion. Miss him so much. We had a great run!

"You'll never get another breed" so true!! I've had my little springer Cassie for a few weeks now (she's four months old) and I'm so in love with her 💕 She's so clever and learns new things quickly and so affectionate and cuddly. Although the puppy phase is challenging and I'm constantly worried about if I'm doing it right, it is so so worth it! I can't imagine my life without her ❤ (And if anyone has any advice on lead pulling and potty training it would be greatly appreciated 😂)

Until they live to a really old age. Mine is 13.5 years old and is no longer able to outrun attacking dogs which believe me has before to my terror. my springer will snarl and attack any dog that threatens him due to not being able to outrun them don't think my dog knows I would kill anyone and anything for them. My dog once ran 3 miles away from me and got back to my house and sat their waiting for me after being ganged up on by 3 labradours I didn't know what to do when I found him I wanted to hit him for running away but I couldn't because I knew he was so smart running 3 miles all the way back to my house.

Definitely true about springer spaniels being intellectually driven dogs! My springer spaniel - passed away now but was the absolute love of my life - had specific barks and whines for whatever he wanted, and if he felt neglected or was bored, he knew exactly what to raid or destroy to 'get back' at us. We used to feed his intelligence by teaching him a bunch of tricks he didn't need to know, but had a lot of fun with. Like giving high fives, fetching specific items by name, playing hide and go seek with me, and in one memorable instance, I taught him the hokey pokey! And when he went deaf, we taught him hand signs for commands, which he picked up on so quickly! He was learning new things and dragging us out on walks up to his last month of life. (As a 15 year old, no less!) Truly a remarkable dog.

Springer's are amazing dogs! They're so sweet, gentle and affectionate. They're energetic and athletic when outdoors but cuddly couch potatoes indoors. They have great senses of humor also. I had a full breed ESS growing up. Now I have a Springer/English Pointer mix that I adopted from a Regional Springer Spaniel Rescue Group. I highly recommend adopting from a rescue group...you save a beautiful life! So Springers are we wonderful dogs. 💜💜💜

I had my parents 13-14 year old Springer Spaniel for the last four months of her life as my parents couldn’t care for her anymore. I didn’t want to do this at the time. I didn’t really like the breed much. She was the most gentle sweet creature I have ever cared for. I bawled like a baby when I had to put her down after the short time had her. Such a good animal.

My working cocker spaniel is the same in many respects. She will say hello to other dogs, but the real business of the walk is following scents. Sasha keeps me honest. She always tells me when it is walkies time. The key to having a happy spaniel is routine. They soon learn what to expect and what you expect from them.

This is a very accurate description of Springers. I hunt mine, they’ll curl-up with you, and are incredibly loyal, and friendly. What I find fascinating though, put them in the fields, and mine are all business when it’s time to hunt, like Jekyll & Hyde. Great Dogs!

I adopted a springer from the cholderton rescue centre near Salisbury years ago. He was about 18 months old and lived to about 15. A beautiful dog inside and out, at times absolutely bonkers. As mentioned not interested in other dogs, much to the bemusement of our other resuce dog a white shepherd who would try a mother him. Very much missed to this day 💔

My 1st dog was a staffy and a great friend, my 2nd was a staffy x springer who died suddenly at 3 years. So I decided to get an English Springer Spaniel and yes the first 6 months I thought I was losing my mind. I could not get her clean , she was just an air head , then suddenly at 6 months almost overnight she joined the dots up and realised that outside was the place to wee. Mocha is now 8 months old and an absolute joy to have, I have had so much fun with her , English Springers are everything you say they are, wonderful dogs. Thank you for a great video. xx

I got mine, a boy at 3 years old from a field trial trainer for use as a gun dog, not only is he brilliant at that he is a total part of the family, and has become my best mate, four walks a day, and he sleeps in between. Moults like crazy but I forgive him for that. As you say ignores other dogs and cats, but Children? My goodness he loves them, he has become a friend to my grandchildren and all the children in my street. We have had various breeds of dogs before him, all loved, but this one “Frodo” is a class above.

We had a black and white English Springer Spaniel from November 2008-August 2014 called Sofie. We got her as a puppy and she was very friendly and energetic. Unfortunately she suffered a few health problems like when she was 2 she had elbow displacia which was very young to get that, and she had ligament problem as well but these were all setbacks but fixable and she had the operation to make her better. However, when she was 5 years 11 months old she got limfoma cancer and it couldn’t be cured, she had chemo to try and extend life for 6 months but it wasn’t working and she was in pain, therefore we put her to sleep 3 days before her 6th birthday. It was very sad because she could’ve had a good 4, 5, 6, + years left. It was nearly 4 years ago now, but we have been thinking of getting another dog since then because they are amazing and give so much to your life. I would definitely recommend a springer because they are great with people as you say!

Love English Springers. So easy to train. Respond to whistle commands or hand gestures easily. I never have to use a lead. Won’t even cross a road unless I command too. I could walk or bike past the road and look back and she will be waiting for my command/whistle to cross.
