It’s great to show people what actually needs to be done to new parts, repairs, ect! People seem to think, you buy new parts, (blocks, heads, cranks, ect!) & just shove them together! Doesn’t work that way! Great job! People also forget, superchargers break crankshafts! Can’t wait to see more 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻!

From a retired machinist I know there is a art in hand roaming and honing that most people don't understand it looks easy from someone experienced like you if not done right It will dig and tear out the bore instead of cutting it out new sub love your work did you make all the fixtures that alone is a time consuming process thanks for sharing your knowledge

Hi Gerald, watching your technique to install these brass bushes, my interest is how do you know if the grub screw brass stop piece is not slightly shifting further away upwards as you install each brass bush into the head. We both understand measuring this distance required as the required insert depth, after each application was inserted would allow you greater understanding / confidence every insert was meeting your requirements…

I cannot speak for Gerald, however I have installed what feels like as many bushing as “Carter has liver pills” using fixtures and tooling that while different is still quite similar to what Gerald was using in this video including the clamp on depth stop. With regard to your concern about the depth stop sliding/slipping upwards when the stop contacts the alignment plate of the fixture when the bushings is being driven in. If you watch Gerald driving in the bushings he is not swinging for the fences but rather is tapping the bushing(s) in and is also looking at/ watching the bushing as he driving them in. Lastly over time and with lots of practice you or should I say you hands because educated to what feels right and what feels wrong and if something feels wrong for what reason I learned long ago stop and figure it why something felt wrong before you continue. I hope that my explanation/ramblings helped answer your question and like my father beat into my head when I was knee high to a grasshopper practice makes perfect. I was wondering the same thing… How does he know that collar isn’t moving a bit? I would rather measure each time to be sure but I’m a hack lol. Mr. Gerald is a true professional. You can eat off that shop floor… Not many machines shops could say the same… God Speed.

Gerald, is the press clearance .0015"-.002" for aluminum blocks or less? I've never installed a set. Would the press clearance be any different on a cast iron block. Thank you for showing your craftsmanship & process.

Oh, baby, a nice big one!! How much of the build do we get to see? I'm amazed the abuse Damon's block has taken. I got a GM 6.5 diesel truck and found a broken crank at the 7/8 journal (manual transmission truck) and it had cracks that ran halfway up those cylinders! And the only block I could find had 3/4 inch cracks up all the outer main cap bolts holes on one side. Needless to say I built a 454 for it.

I think you need a half inch drill motor to run that reamer. Yeah I do about four cylinders and I'd be done I wouldn't want to touch that thing ever again.

Do you take on new customers, or are you loaded up with existing clients? I ask because I want a good machine shop to do pretty much everything for an engine I want to assemble. I have a brand new block that I need the lifters moved and bushed. The block needs decked and honed too. Also need the heads completely gone through and the crank balanced. I'd love to be able to ship it all to you and leave it with you to do it all right.

A brace would be better than a T handle. It would cut in a constant motion. The hone should take care of the burr, but, it can also pile it up. And with a brace you can ease the downward pressure, which is the main cause of deviation. Using a brace with the hone too, would give total control of the cut.

Curious how You determine where the key way sits in relation to the block, i know you had arrows and id assume that how the key way sits then locates the lifters in relation to the cam and that wheel on the lifter would have to be perfect with the cam Lobe would be cool To see how all that is figured, i may not be saying that correctly but enjoy your work man thankyou
