Great demonstration of the way different light modifiers effect the way the light falls. Also a very graphic demonstration of how the inverse square law effects light fall-off. Thanks Mark. Definitely one of your top episodes.

They're worth their own show. They're the worst-and best-of both worlds. They spill more than they throw (they're really just a reflective umbrella that leaks enough that you can use them backwards) so like bare bulb you get a lot of "free fill", and because the distance between the light source and the subject varies across the surface of the umbrella, they have a different lighting pattern (a hotter center and feathered edges, even with the "skirted" ones).

I tend to look at the catchlights myself. I was in a baby store a couple of weeks ago to get a seat for the car. Behind the tills was a huge image of a baby. There was a lovely catchlight, but also a silhouette of the photographer within the catchlight.

Um, Adorama is the obvious answer (and has excellent customer reviews you can use as a guide). The real answer, though, is "almost everywhere"-every large brick-and-mortar photo store will have something, and you'll run out of fingers and toes long, long before you run out of online retailers. Most of the lighting makers, like Profoto, Elinchrom and Paul C. Buff, offer kits that include stands, umbrellas and triggers (even the cheap but questionable Chinese ones). They're everywhere.

In a sense, you're right. But you need to consider how powerful your flash or strobe is. If you're using a speedlite then you'll have a much limited range of options for diffusing your light source.

No, but they do make hexagonal and octagonal softboxes, and most of the "name" brands offer a front diffuser panel that is a white circle with a black border for their larger units. (You can easily make a black circle mask for the cheapies if you're working on a budget.)

You could get the background completely black by positioning the model and light farther from the background. But the light at the same distance.

What a great video...finally someone explains these things in enough detail. Thanks PS If the umbrella is deeper, and the light is contained, does that help to keep it from filling the whole room?
@alfonsorojas7847
@alfonsorojas7847 11 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't matter where your camera is. Once you expose for a certain area your settings are the same regardless how far you are from the model. If the light doesn't change, neither will your settings.

Yes but the reflected light off the models face doesn't obey the inverse square law because of the magnification factor you get with using a longer focal length lens at the greater distance. With that magnification comes a larger front element that gathers more light, the f-stop ratio being the same. The best example of this is taking pictures of the moon at night. If you want to see the features on the moon you use a day light exposure. Hope that helps.
@essellar
@essellar 12 жыл бұрын
You can never get the reflective surface of an umbrella as close to your subject as you can get the front diffuser of a softbox. (The light stand and flash are in the way.) There will be different fall-off effects at the subject position, so while you can come close, you can't get the *same* effect, and sometimes the difference is important to the shot. It depends on the look you're after, and experience will guide you. It might be worth following DC Chavez at Profoto for more info.

The differece between the softbox and the umbrella as first shown (where the softbox makes the background darker) could be duplicated with the umbrella by moving the model and the umbrella a little further from the back ground, right? If so, would that make the only real difference be the shape of the catch lights?

I currently have a setup with umbrellas and would like to have lights that are more controllable in terms of direction. I have seen the apollo as well as rapid box. I can see that i can get a 43' apollo plus stip with a 16" x 30" Apollo Strip including the egg grid for about usd 200. looking at the rapid box the set (octa+stip) is smaller and about usd 400 plus i no egg grid included. Would you be able to point out the advantages and disadvantages of either set with speedlites? As photography does not create an income for me I am budget conscious but always believe in "buy it once, buy it right", too...

at 7:25 you make a comparison, which is technically not the same comparison and you miss the most important point - Softbox was much closer to her face, and square law works better, making background darker. It is not becase of the Softbox itself, but the distance which you can control.
