I spent an amazing time recently searching out some awesome subject matter on a farm property including two old Chevy's and a wonderful gate post and tree. When I returned at night the 3 or 4 hours flew by as I put my fine art light painting techniques into practice.
Follow the story and I'd love to hear your comments and also what photography projects you're working on.

@@nightscapeimages.richard I'm a commercial photographer in Las Vegas where the bottom has dropped out of the photographic business. I'm older so I'm in the house a lot trying to find things to do. Well, I found your channel and it truly has lifted my enthusiasm and now I'm on a mission to photograph the night sky. It's really perfect for me because I go out into the Nevada desert on my own and enjoy the serenity of the night and with your great teaching, I have come back with some really decent images. Thanks again

I'm a new subscriber, Richard, really enjoying your concise tutorials including the beautiful images. On TV we see a lot of snakes in Australia, but that's probably in areas other than the agriculture zones. Would be concerned about walking among the snakes in total darkness. (I'm from Texas and we have some of that problem.)
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Old400. We have plenty of snakes in Australia but not in the winter time. I don't visit some of the more dangerous places in the warm weather. In the Southern Hemisphere we have our best milky way viewing through the winter months so it's not a problem.

Absolutely STUNNING! Thank you Richard for your wonderful instruction and inspiration. Please, what is your standard for distance from bright lighted urban areas? I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA and must travel a distance to achieve dark enough skies for proper milky way observance. Also, your time laps shows the lighted highway traffic AND a beautiful milky way rising through the sky. How is that possible?

Thanks so much for watching Michael. I live in a rural town of about 100,00 people but it's only a 20 minute drive to get away from the lights. Where I shot the timelapse is in a dark area of the freeway ... I'm also guessing our freeways here in Australia may not be the same as your's over in the US. The country roads are very dark.

Another great video Richard. If you don't mind me asking, on your last timelapse, you said it was about 3 1/2 hours or so. What did you set the interval at between shots. Just started doing timelapse and want to start capturing the milky way next year when it returns. thanks.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching fingerstylefan. For standard milky way timelapse I shoot using an external intervalometer, just a cheap ebay one. I set the camera to f2.8 20 sec exposures iso2500 or thereabouts. I usually set a 5 second interval between shots and then let the camera take shots until I think it's finished. This time will vary depending on what you're shooting. With the timelapse in this video I used a special intervalometer to gradually "ramp" the exposure as the light changed because I strtaed the shoot before nightfall and finished well after dark. I used the Timelapse View Plus to do that. Hope that helps.

THANKS - Your videos are simply incredible! Instructive, yes of course, but also FASCINATING! These are so well done - My wife and I cannot wait for each episode to come out. Do you really use mainly a GH3 for filming - sharp as a razor, full screen on our monitor. Just amazing.

Thanks so much for your awesome feedback on my videos AerialLensVideo ... it means a lot. Yes all of my filming is done with the Panasonic micro 4/3 cameras or the FZ2500. The only shots that aren't are the night shots which are taken with the Nikon D750 with fast lenses. The GH 3 can't cope with the very low light levels or high iso's. This latest video was shot exclusively with the Panasonic FZ2500 fixed lens body ... it's a great machine.

Holy cow! I just read-up on the Panasonic FZ2500 - THAT HAS TO BE the best fixed lens camera in the World! I just cannot believe the specs and all it does - just amazing. I'd save up and get one except for one fatal shortcoming: I personally really need a wider field of view (at least down to 18mm equiv) - heartbreaking, that.
@nightscapeimages.richard

Yes it's a great camera but like everything else not without the odd shortcoming here or there. The built in ND filters are amazing for video.

i have subscribed to ur awesome channel. u love what u do and thats good to see. i would like to point out that the in the image containing the two cars, the leaves of the tree behind them are blurred. if that was not intentional then u know how to fix it. maybe taking a shorter exposure as much as possible

Another great video!! I want to ask something please. Why do you use f2.2 for the sky while lens capabilities up to 1.8? I would say that with 1.8 it would appear more stars maybe. thank you.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Chris. Yes the image is brighter at f1.8 but it is sharper when stopped down a little. Sometimes I even shoot that lens at f2.8 for the same reason.

So if you are light painting a composite? say at 15 seconds.... you torch paint one object? then take another frame and concentrate on say the truck grill? And so on? Perhaps using different colored gels even? Also I think you shooulld have an amazon link set up because people will want to order torches you use. I just ordered the Ledlenser - P7.2
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Michael. Yes that's pretty much how I do it. I rarely use other coloured gels however. The orange cto gel is simply to balance out the torch colour back to white because of the different camera white balance setting.

Love your images, this stuff is really inspiring. One suggestion though, you should stop using 1080i for your KZfaq videos...the interlaced motion blur is really distracting. Would be much more pleasurable if you moved over to 1080p for your video captures. Keep up the great content, and thanks for sharing!

@richardtatti9133

Pete Reichstein Hey Pete. I used the Timelapse view plus intervalometer to get that sequence. It automatically changes the shutter speed and then iso to gradually change exposure. You can set the parameters and just let it go. I left the aperture at f2.8 all the way through. For the beginning it would have been about 1/200 at iso100 but finished at 20 seconds at iso2500.
