Another point I unfortunately forgot to discuss is that regardless of rep range, you should push your reps at least near-failure (with some benefit to complete failure but not excessively). So if you're doing 10 reps of something, that tenth rep should feel pretty damn difficult, almost as if you can only do one or two after.

Diet is the most important, definitely. But moderate to light weights might be good to help push yourself in the gym. Ie heaving lifting of only 4 reps per set might not make you sweat and burn as much calories as 10 reps in a set. Personally, I've found pyramiding, drop setting, and super setting is probably the best for shredding. Brings your heart rate up and keeps it up there, promotes hypertrophy as well as some strength gains.

Ive gotten way better muscle building results from moderate weight than heavy weight. And I can workout more often because the SNS doesn't have to recover as much from the heavy weight. I do up to 50 reps per set and my muscles are growing like a weed. And I am not a new lifter either.

Chrono its because of posture - it happened with me to. Its just that if you lift lighter weights you have a better posture
@chrono8233
@chrono8233 4 жыл бұрын
@@laptops4630 Totally agree that this is one of the reasons why moderate weight will work better for some people. Ive had several imbalances throughout my 15 years of training. I recently just bought one of those posture straps on amazon to keep the shoulders back. It was a game changer. Some people just have horrible habbits and posture can be a hard thing to master especially when you have been training with bad posture it only makes it worse and wose. But still the studies do show as long as total volume is the same, the same muscle is built either way. So its more than only posture.

Another reason lighter weight may work better is time under tension. Less weight, more you can control the tension up and down. Without periods of free fall

Another thing to note that I didn't reach in the video is that often going too light can result in difficulty reaching equal volume of a moderate or heavy program. Some studies noted that subjects employing a high-rep protocol often complained more, felt more burned out, and sometimes vomited. Things to consider when you're employing such a program yourself. Ultimately, the best goal is to do a wide variety of rep ranges that first cater to your goal and something you can do without hurting yourself. Good luck! Get your protein!

I suspect that high-rep protocols can be hard on the cardiovascular system, especially if you're doing that under the supervision of a trainer, which might explain why some individuals felt more burned out or vomited. This scenario is quite typical for beginners in programs such as Les Mills Bodypump and similar cross-training programs. At the beginning the limiting factor isn't how heavy you can lift, it's how close you can push yourself without starting to feel like you're about to throw up or faint. Perhaps a more reasonable approach in a future study would be to first increase the VO2 max of the participants through some HIIT or equivalent cardiovascular programs, and then do the experiments.

Galen Sturup hope your day doing good, when you do compound movements like bench, squat, deadlift, back, shoulders go light to heavy with a 3 rep minimum and then next week give your body a break and do 10-12. Then switch back again to heavy alternating weeks. Then smaller muscles and non compound where you isolate that muscle keep it at 6-10 reps with the muscle under tention 100 percent of the time meaning keep elbows slightly bent etc etc and isolate the muscles the next week with 10-15 reps and get the blood in the muscle. Hope this helps

The most annoying thing in the world was when every meat head in there at one point in time had walked up to me telling me im not gonna get any results the way I was doing it. I think some people over complicate working out. Stretch, dont hurt yourself and push yourself. Too many people wanna act like their way is the only way because they assume you want the results they have.

When you do lower weights, it’s very easy to go fast paced, because it’s so light. While that’s true, during your lower weight days, you should actually do your lifts slower to really target the intended muscle you’re trying to hit.

Mr IY You can still lift heavy dude. I do a lot of triathlon and cross country so when I do gym a few times a week I lift as heavy as possible to make it more interesting and add a bit of variety. Plus I just find it more fun. Don’t be afraid of putting on muscle, unless you’re super elite at one of them you can lift and run no problem.

Let me help you people out 1-5 reps you're strength training with little muscle growth 5-8 reps you are building strength and muscle 8-12 reps you're more focused on building muscle. I like to stick to max 10 reps. You can do more than 10 reps then, that means you need to lift heavier
@JoseRamirez-yh2ll
@JoseRamirez-yh2ll 6 жыл бұрын
LeBron Crybaby James - Sr. I never stated that you can't make gains. I said depending on your rep range is what focuses more on. Like low rep is strength, medium reps muscle, and high reps endurance. I did say that you gain strength with little muscle. Never said you don't make any at all. I'll tell you this, low reps = strength gains. The stronger you are more reps you can do with heavy weight which later turns to medium reps= to more muscle gains in the future. Idk if that made sense, didn't proof read my writing

It's good to mix it up. If I can't.hit 15 reps it's to heavy. That way I can squeeze the muscle with each rep and I keep good form. I see it all the time at the gym people lifting heavy but swinging the weight or just crap snap city form.
@beefy32
@beefy32 6 жыл бұрын
From personal experience as long as you lift with strict form and go to failure on every set then the weight does not really matter. As long as you get the pump, that feeling that your muscles are tight and filled with blood, they should feel really full then growth will happen. There will be a point that a light weight will feel like a heavy weight near the end of the session.

Hey PF! I have a question! When making a video you seem to really know your stuff and do a lot of research. My question(just purely out of interest): how long do you take to do research before actually editing the video? And how do you know you have good sources? Just out of interest because this seems like a tough one to me haha
@PictureFit
@PictureFit 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on my previous knowledge and how quickly I can access and read the information. I typically sit days without writing a single line for the script because I'm busy trying to extrapolate and understand all of the research. It takes much longer if there's a lot of conflicting information. Something that is more straightforward, I will read for an entire day and then starting putting pen to paper the next. Scripts in total takes the longest, roughly 3-4 days. I base my sources on many factors, such as peer-review, authors that I believe to be knowledgeable + willing to accept when they're wrong (hugely important), randomized trials, non-conflicting funding sources, and have multiple other studies showing the same effect. I can break it down more but it gets a bit wordy. I do feel that I try my very best to get the right information, but even then, I know I won't get it right all the time. Hope this clear things up!

In conclusion, everything works. As long as you stay consistent. Be patient as well, perhaps you think you're not seeing growth because you expect it right a way. It may take years to reach your goals. You're better off incorporating the work as part of your life for the rest of your life. Work hard expecting little to nothing in return.

I really like this video thanks very simple and straight forward and the conclusion is exactly co-rrelated to the type of training a lot of gold medallist/champion level athletes do, very their training according to their goals, even among the same sport, let's say strongman, football (soccer), swimming etc... You see people with complete different routines! Now I wonder what type of body do you get when you do lighter weight up until you can do a lot of reps like, 25, for example, and then increase it and repeat. So for instance Step 1- you starting weight is 5kg Step 2-train until you can do 25 reps 1 set (to put an example, maybe higher or lower depending) Step 3-increase it by, let's say, 1kg-5kg. Step 4-Repeat from step 2. I really would love to see what type of result you'd get like this :P I might try it just to see, sounds like a good experiment that would serve everyone, including me.

One thing the video did not talk about is compound lifts vs. isolation lifts. If you want to lift for strength, compound lifts are the way to go. If you want to isolate body parts and build individual muscle groups that way, then isolation lifts are the way to go. I personally lift for strength. If you're doing compound lifts, use progressive overload. Do a 5 x 5 workout. Add a little more weight each week to your 5 x 5. Do a one rep max in a particular lift only once per month. You will eventually plateau. In order to break through a plateau, try doing accessory lifts in order to address your weak areas. So if you want a better dead lift, try working on dead lifts from a deficit once in a while or try doing stiff legged dead lifts. If you want a better squat, try box squats or front squats or goodmornings once in a while. And remember, you can't go heavy all the time. You central nervous system sometimes needs a break. Some weeks you will want to deload and take some weight off that bar and work on high reps. Mix it up once in a while. Hope this helps.

Simplified version: For aesthetic thus toning muscle, not primarily for mass. Do moderate light weight so around 50% of your 1rm (not rigid. Any weight you can do for at least 12 reps.) 3-4 sets of a certain movement/exercise. Mass plus strength. (With mass comes strength). Do as heavy as you can for 4-6 reps, with longer rest periods and 2 more sets than you would normally do. For sport muscle endurance e.g. boxing, basketball etc. at least 25 reps heavy as possible. Shorter rest periods. These only apply if you are natural.
