LIGHTING CIRCUIT FAULTS. Some common problems with lighting circuits and solutions.

There are many occasions when a customer has problems with lighting circuits, but there is little to go wrong with lighting, the occasional lamp that blows, maybe the odd switch that decides to stop switching and that is about it.
A lot of problems are self-inflicted though, usually after a decorating or renovation spree. The customer decides to change the ceiling rose and then realises that there are 10 wires to go back into the new rose. Or they will remove the wall switch to paper the lounge wall with those famous last words - Don’t worry, I know where the wires go - but they forget.
So here are four common faults or problems that are created by ourselves, by the customer, or by some other tradesman that perhaps doesn’t quite understand lighting circuits.
It’s good to learn what should be done, and good to solve a problem - enjoy.

You're a top fella Dave. As an apprentice I muddled the strapper cable on at least a couple of occasions. I was red faced trying to figure out what I'd done wrong. It worked but not how intended. Sometimes it's the simplest mistakes. Keep doing what you're doing buddy. You're producing some mighty fine tutorials 👍.

Superb and easier understood than a lot of other books etc. its never been clear to me what way the current travels in certain switching scenarios until now. you make a seemingly complicated [ to the novice ] trade a lot easier to get my head round. I cant thank you enough and hope you keep making these videos until im old and grey.

This vid is a godsend. I have done all of these as a diyer and never knew how. I am now qualified and it is good to know or be reminded what causes the different scenarios.

The oddest & biggest pain in the arse I've had with lighting was installing 6 led spots in place of an old 6ft flourescent. They worked great for about a week then all 6 started going to half brightness!! I re terminated every connection, replaced the switch drop & the issue randomly continued after a couple more days. Luckily i could easily get to the loft area. I measured ( whilst in fault mode) 188v !!! I replaced the complete circuit & feed ( from the adjacent bathroom) & all is ok. I meggered the 1.5 T&E that i removed & scrutinized it severely, & it looked perfect. I can only assume that the cable had a break down within the copper somehow !!! But it meggered ok & a low resistance test came back ok !!

Could have been leaky cable insulation, it could have been leaking to something it was touching. Sometimes these random problems remain a mystery. Almost certainly the old cable was the root of the problem. Good that its sorted.

hi, With the ' it blows the fuse on switch on ' , what if the lights had not been disconnected for decorating or what ever reason for disconnected and reconnected wrong and it has just developed this fault , what could the issue be then ? A short some where , but how would you go about finding where the shot is ? is there a video like the ' Fault finding - Ring circuit ' , for the lights ? or would it be the same method you would use as in the Fault finding - Ring circuit, continuity test first then insulation resistance?

Useful thankyou! What about a 2-way switch where only one orientation of switches work? So there’s only 1 out of the 4 possible ways of having the switches that works. Is that a problem with the switch itself?

That sounds like a wiring fault, check that your wires are going to the correct terminals. Have another look at the video, a scenario like that is covered. Thanks for watching. Dave.

Hi, I replaced the switch and it started working properly again. Your video gave me the theoretical knowledge to realise that one of the switches must be the issue, and also demonstrated the patience required to find faults. Thank you for this informative video. Great content as usual. Fault-finding techniques for RFCs would be very useful. BTW, what software are you using for your diagrams?

I just use powerpoint. I used to use CorelDraw until about twenty years ago and thinking about going back to it. But I've been thinking for two years now. Thanks for watching.

Hello, What is the minimum size of an aluminium conductor which feed a lighting circuit, 16mm² or 1.5mm². In OSG, table I1, aluminium cable only begins with the size of 16mm²

Correct. Table 52.3 page 148 of the Regs book. Be careful with old aluminium cables as they become brittle and can snap as you bend them. And remember to dip them in an anti-galvanic compound before putting them in brass terminals. Sometimes best to try and rewire that part of the circuit in copper if possible. Dave.
