How to test for insulation resistance inside a consumer unit. Marcus is carrying out an electrical inspection and testing when he come across a fault giving him a low reading during the insulation resistance test. These videos will help with AM2, AM2S, AM2E and your apprenticeship end point assessments. The testing and fault finding is carried out with a Megger MFT tester in controlled conditions at Tresham College.

As an adult learner anything on fault finding is a great help. Coincidentally, I've been watching JW's videos on "borrowed neutrals" so a future video on how to find one using IR would be great. Thanks again for the video.

I’m an adult learner as well. How do you find your course? I’m a bit disappointed with the lack of practical training from the course provider.

@@andreradu7348 I'm an adult learner too, you can't expect a lot of practical training if you are studying at a slow pace and in your own home, to get the experience you want you will have to find a job as an improver (provided you pass the building regs phase and get a ECS/CSCS card), find an electrician willing to take you on as an apprentice. The only way you will get practical learning sessions is if you go to college for it.

@@titmando1199 Being an apprentice at 25 with an average of 150-200 quid a week isn’t doable. Unless you live with family and all expenses paid for. I heard that certain course providers do offer workshops on a regular basis for all students regardless of levels, hence my comment. Electrician mate jobs are scarce in my area and when they do come available they get filled up quickly. College is a good alternative which I was looking into but unfortunately next term starts in mid-September 2021 😓

If it is lighting and as you say split the circuit mid point and the leg coming from the board is clear i connect back up then youv got lighting to some of the property while you find the fault on the other leg, usefull if its getting dark at least theyl be light coming in same on a Ring main lets say split mid way whichever leg is clear bang back in the breaker at the board temporarily gets half the sockets on 👍 great videos these

Here in NZ the megger voltage is around 1000v. Do your regs call for 250v testing ? Interesting to see how regs vary form country to country. Ring ccts are illegal here too.. In order to keep our registration active we are required to do a refresher course every two tears... I mean years.. :) Last refresher I was a week late and I received an email stating I must not do prescribed electrical work even tho I have a spotless track record for the last 40 years. Another interesting fact thats way over the top IMO is if you fit a back to back power point ( or GPO) the 6inches of cable requires to be insulation tested. Insulation testing goes hand in hand with earth loop impedance tests.

Great intuitive videos as usual - keep up the good work - However, getting annoyed with all instructive/educational vids which do not allow for real life / on-site realistic approach/procedures. Does anyone else agree some vids should cover this. Example - Testing insulation resistance (Nobody removes lamps, dimmers, pirs, fluorescent lighting, batteries etc etc, it would take an age. So why not demonstrate test at 250v procedure with L/N connected together and testing them to earth ?? Opinions on this?

When testing across Neutral and earth. Whats the minimum reading you would expect an rcd to trip out.

Turn the circuit on Listen and look for arcing and smell for smoke! Then get the tester out

Could you clarify? if I was doing a global IR test, and I got a reading of below 2 Meg Ohms, say 1.5 Meg Ohms. Then I would be required to investigate further, and test the individual circuits. And if I found one particular circuit was reading say 1.8 MegOhms then all would be ok as it’s above the minimum of 1 Meg Ohm as stated in bs7671. (assuming it was an eicr and not a new install). So on the test form would I still write the 1.5MegOhms? Being the global reading across the installation as a whole. Or would you write individual circuit ir readings on the form?

It’s the overall insulation resistance of the board to be 1 MegOhm or more not individual circuits. It’s the old resistors in parallel calculation to find the overall resistance. If you had 6 circuit of 200MegOhms and one of 2MegOhms the overall insulation resistance would be less than 2MegOhms. Thanks for commenting and watching. Gaz 🦾

Would the test between neutral and earth not show zero ohms if the neutral was ultimately connected to the earth at the centre tap of the star side side of a delta/star supply transformer feeding the installation, or am I missing something?

What happens if the lines were dropped in and out of a lighting point but not in order of distance from the board? Daisy chained all over the place? As you occasionally find in older added on installations?🤔

Dont think it matters, as long as insulation tests are done and the cable/installation is fit for purpose.

It's suggested you remove all lamps etc before IR testing. If there were an abundance of downlights, would you be required to disconnect all of these?

Hey, can i please ask an electrical question...i have an old cottage, Rcd consumer unit fitted but went to change bedroom light fixture and found Red, Black and a bare wire ...does a qualified Electrician fit Blue to Red, Brown to Black and green/yellow to the bare wire? 😉 Thanks

Let’s say it’s an old instillation And the lighting circuit was just 1 light and let’s say 20 cm away from the point of test . If the result was still just over 1megohm . I thought that would still be a pass ? I still agree there’s something sinister going on but as far as I’m aware that’s still a pass . Obviously I’m not talking About new installations. Any feedback would be great

Hello. I live in a rented property and have been told that I have an insulation resistance fault that was apparently found a couple of years ago and that an electrician will need to visit me. This may be a silly question but my house is quite crowded and all my power-points are behind book shelves with extension leads plugged in. Will he need access to all power-points please? This will be a bit of a task to sort before he arrives. Thanks for anyone who can answer this 🙂

Hi guys, I noticed there was no Live conductors to earth test carried out i.e. line and neutral combined to earth. Is that test not relevant. If not how would we record this on our test result. Would it have been worst of the two readings for L-E or N-E dependent which of the two had the lowest reading? Love to know this as I always get confused.
