When it comes to line, leader and gear changes on the water, if it isn’t easy, you won’t do it. That’s a Troutbitten mantra, and it’s the same for every angler I’ve ever met. It’s true, because none of us wants to waste fishing time by tying knots. Reaching into packs and pockets, stringing up line and turning tippet, takes us away from what we enjoy most - casting and drifting.
On the flip side, continued success and enjoyment on the river is a result of versatility. Solving the daily mystery, adapting our approach and getting that next bite is our endless goal. Adapting and changing quickly is therefore a critical piece of the game. Knotting on the next fly is the easy part, but swift, wholesale leader changes are more elusive.
Honestly, there are a lot of bad ways to change leaders. And sadly, some of them are the industry standards.
I’ve tried everything you can think of, and I’d like to show you what works for me. I change leaders and rigs often. I do it fast, and I sincerely believe it can’t be done with any more efficiency. This is the way.

Nice video. Been flyfishing 62 years now. Seems to me that all you young guys have gotten pretty technical. The men that taught me were flyfishermen and simplicity was the key. I only change leaders when it becomes frayed or damaged. Tippet is different. Now nearly 70, I enjoy time on the bank to enjoy surroundings. Fish will wait except during a hatch which can be shortlived. When I was young it was all about catching fish, whereas as I get older, I realise that taking time to appreciate what the Lord gave us makes alot of sense. Have fun, be technical if it makes you feel good. Flyfishing or any fishing is what you want it to be. I tie my flies and build my rods, but on the water I keep it simple, and when I approach the water, the trout say "oh no, its him again!
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten 2 жыл бұрын
Glenn, I appreciate your comment. And yet, I take it to insinuate that these technical videos are missing something. It seems that you're asserting that our pursuit of improving technique is incomplete. I would challenge you on those points. First, I've built Troutbitten, from the beginning, to honor both sides of the fishing game, both the technical and the experiential. Yes, it's possible to be changing leaders and tinkering with tactics and still appreciate everything about the beauty and wonder of our surroundings. That's what so many of us do EVERY day. I ask you to reexamine this video itself. Look how it is shot. Look at the art involved, the acknowledgement that the water and the trees make the experience. It's all there, my friend. Lastly, I've written about this over and over on Troutbitten. We've said it in the podcast. Chasing good tactics doesn't mean we ignore the experience. That concept is everywhere on Troutbitten. This is probably the first article I wrote about it: Two Sides to Every Fisherman troutbitten.com/2016/10/09/two-sides-to-every-fisherman/ Cheers, and thanks for listening. Dom

@@Troutbitten Wow! Some years ago I co-wrote a paper titled Human Group Factors in automated Environments. It discussed how as we utilize social networks to communicate instead of face to face we have to choose words carefully to minimize misinterpretation and cause conflict. I in no way was insinuating you left anything out. Infact I shared it with several fishing buds. It was well done and based on other comments, very well received. I was simply sharing my perspective and experience of 62 years.(actually63 but whats 1 year😁) I simply dont change leaders very often and while your well done video made me think, I dont believe one way or the other makes a difference. As I said do what makes you happy. Thats what it is all about. Sorry if I offended you. I do enjoy your videos. For over 15 years I carry at least 12 prettied leaders with dry dropper or double dropper Riggs. I use foam pipe insulation. I cut groves In it about 6 with 1/2” space in between . I shape the base of the grove with a Dremel barrel sander. Then I wrap the leaders on to the foam I make a 3/4” dowel to go down the center it has a champagne cork attached at one end. You hold the dowel and it allows you to pull the leaders off quickly. You can then wind the leader you are replacing back in the empty spot. I carry these in plastic tubbing just the diameter of the foam pipe insulation. I can very quickly change Riggs and be rigged up much quicker than any of my fishing buddies. I will have 12 different combos I can choose from throughout the day. I mark the top of the champagne cork to indicate type of rigs. DD , for double down , etc. This system works very well and give me great flexibility when out on the rivers.

For my long leaders I carry an old reel with some beat up fly line. When I want to change to a shorter leader I cut all the tippet minus ~6" or so, tie it to the line on the reel and reel it in. When it's time to reattach it's already got the butt facing out so I just tie it on the fly line, loosen the drag on the old reel and reel it in. I've personally never had issues with rolling shorter leaders up and wrapping the butt around. Actually having a loop on the leader helps keep it in place. Having a set number of times you wrap the butt section around the leader is also helpful. I use 5 times around every time on the river or when I'm tying leaders at the house.

You may have seen Howard Croston's video on connecting leaders to lines. Same as yours basically, but he cuts the factory loop off and whips a micro loop in the line. Apparently is stronger and slides through the guides easier.
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten 2 жыл бұрын
Right on. I've seen that. But Croston is forced to fish under competition rules, so his leader can only be twice the length of the fly rod. Therefore, his leader junction will be in and out of the guides pretty often, hence the obsession of many comp anglers over that junction. I build my leaders, designed to keep the junction out of the guides at almost all times. troutbitten.com/2021/03/14/design-and-function-of-the-troutbitten-standard-mono-rig/ And when the junction does go through, it's very streamlined anyway, as you can see in the video. Basically, whipping a micro loop is not worth the bother at all. Remember, much of what you here about long leader tactics, tight line and euro nymphing stuff, is spoken by competition anglers who fish under a set of restrictions that limit a wide range of versatile options. Cheers. Dom

I think its possible to add 1ft connection peace if someone still doesn't want a slit on the on fly line. It's gonna be something like this. FLY LINE -> (loop to loop) -> 1FT MAXIMA -> (clinch knot) -> TIPPET RING -> MONO RIG A bit more complicated but this way the fly line is untouched and you don't cut a piece of mono rig every time you change it.
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten 2 жыл бұрын
Right on. I have a full article on doing it this way. It's how we did it before we had fly line loops. troutbitten.com/2017/03/21/get-me-back-to-my-fly-connecting-and-disconnecting-the-mono-rig/

Awesome idea. I'll meet you in the middle though and do a loop knot instead to maintain the integrity of the fly line loop
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten 6 ай бұрын
I understand that though, and I hear it a lot. The truth is I'm not sure what you mean by the integrity of the fly line loop. Do you mean the tiny slit through the coating of the loop that the leader makes? That's a GOOD thing. That means it's biting into the fly line CORE. And that's where the actual integrity of the fly line is. So that's what we want to connect with. If you give it a try, you'll see the benefit, and you'll see what I mean. There's actually less effect to the fly line with the Clinch method. Why does it matter? Because leader changes are much quicker if you don't have to bring a whole leader through the loop twice (one off and the other on). The Clinch method is also much cleaner when it goes through the guides. Ultimately, if you have a system that works for you, then don't change. I'm not trying to change your mind. I only mention the stuff above to provide clarity to the concept. Because without that part of this system, leader changes aren't very fast. It's a key part to being versatile for me. Have fun out there!

Love the videos - have gone down the rabbit hole this week and read just about every article on your site! I am looking to get into the sport from spin fishing so I have a lot to learn (and also clicking your links as I make purchases!). One question is I know in one article you use the blood knot approach from fly line to tippet ring, and then here you use a clinch instead directly to your leader. If I was to transition from your tight line leader to a more traditional dry fly setup would I be best suited to do the blood knot setup or just remove the tight line leader and do a clinch/loop to loop connection into a dry fly leader? For me it would be easier to just swap the leaders directly from the fly line but is the damage to the fly line going to be a problem for a dry fly setup? Also are you going to be getting more leaders in stock soon? I would love to support the project as I get out on the water for the first time! -Alex

"One question is I know in one article you use the blood knot approach from fly line to tippet ring, and then here you use a clinch instead directly to your leader. " Right on. I do that only when there's no fly line loop. It's a good solution then. "For me it would be easier to just swap the leaders directly from the fly line but is the damage to the fly line going to be a problem for a dry fly setup?" There is no damage to the fly line. If the loop is there on the fly line, I would use it. "Also are you going to be getting more leaders in stock soon?" Yes, thank you. Should be back in about a month. Cheers.

I do have one other question for you, if I have a floating fly line, would I would to add another 20-30 ft of 20lb Maxima mono on top of your recommended 24ft to ensure that my fly line is never present in the guides for the best presentation? If was just to attach the leader as built (about 30ft) directly to my fly line, my guess would be most of the time the fly line would be in the guides and on long drifts would end up in the water - which would negatively impact both presentations and sensitivity. Cheers!
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Жыл бұрын
Hi there. Since you're asking, I'll give you my honest opinion . . . What will hurt your presentation and sensitivity more than anything is trying to cast too far away. The tight line game is not for long distance. Efforts to push it further than about 30-35 feet, regardless of leader design, are counterproductive. If you want to fish nymphs further than that, I'd use a fly line. Here's more: troutbitten.com/2021/06/13/the-fundamental-mistake-of-tight-line-and-euro-nymphing-anglers/ There's a good reason the Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig is designed the way it is. @Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Жыл бұрын
Hi there. Easy fix on that one. Your fly line needs to be reeled tight on the spool, with plenty of tension. I've seen what you describe with a few of my guided guests. If the fly line is a little loose, it allows gaps for the leader to slip down into. I've always reeled in with plenty of tension. It's even more important if you want to lay a Mono Rig on top of it. One more thing: micro thin leaders will slip down in easier. This is yet another reason to choose standard butt sections instead of extra thin. troutbitten.com/2021/03/14/design-and-function-of-the-troutbitten-standard-mono-rig/ Cheers. Dom

loved the vid and the channel. fly fishing newbie here, so sorry for the stupid/long winded questions. I have a 10ft 3wt rod with a 3wt wf floating line and 5/6wt reel. Can I use my wf line and the mono/micro/euro leaders attached to that line or should I buy a euro fly line for my euro/micro/mono leaders. If you can use both what are the pros and Con? Also do you ship your leaders to Ireland? Thanks
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks or your questions. Unfortunately I do not ship overseas. But thank you for asking. Regarding your other question. I find euro fly lines to be almost useless. Remember, they are simply a workaround for the FIPS competition rule dictating leader length, so a euro fly line tries to get as skinny as the rules will allow and still be a fly line. Why handicap yourself to tournament rules, if you don't need to? Many more thoughts and explanations can be found here, in a full article that I've published on Troutbitten about the subject. I think you'll find there are some nuances to my opinion that might matter for you. Cheers. Euro Fly Line vs Mono Rig troutbitten.com/2021/01/04/euro-nymphing-fly-line-vs-the-mono-rig/

See any issue placing one of the braided loop connectors on the fly line and tying leader to it via clinch knot? My fly line already had or never had a welded loop connection on it. Not sure if this will be as streamline but was curious about your thoughts on this.

Personally, I hate those braided loops. I would do it this way: troutbitten.com/2017/03/21/get-me-back-to-my-fly-connecting-and-disconnecting-the-mono-rig/ Cheers.

Seems almost sacrilegious slit the fly line and I know a few fishermen/women who would be appalled! but I can see the benefits in being able to change the rig so quickly so I’m going to give it a try.

You are damaging the fly line changing leaders like that. Getting the core of the fly line wet, which degrades it, changes the weight of the line, and can lead to it sinking. I don't think loop-loop is amazing, but it beats this. Prior to loops, I was always taught to seal the end of the line w/ head cement. And I rarely take loops up through my guides, so I don't see that as a problem. You should be casting with the line out of your guides anyways. If I really wanted to make a similar situation work, I'd probably tie in a semi-permanent short butt section of leader to the fly line with a tippet ring. Then you could change out all day without messing up your fly line

Doesn't damage the line or add weight or make it sink. I addressed that in the video. I used to do as you suggest with the butt section and tippet ring. Works well. Wrote about that here: troutbitten.com/2017/03/21/get-me-back-to-my-fly-connecting-and-disconnecting-the-mono-rig/ But once these fly line loops became a staple, the way I showed it is just better. Whatever works for you is the right way. Have fun out there.

It's a nice educational work. But you cut it up and left it alone, preserving the carbon bones. We should have some respect for our planet. That's the only way we can be grateful for what it offers us. Respectfully.
