Great to see my old friend Jeff Schewe. I left Fujifilm almost 20 years ago so it's been a while. Glad to see he hasn't aged a bit in all that time as have I. Will definitely subscribe to get the great info you guys put out and to see some more of my old friends like Dano and Mike Bulbenko.

Great stuff - keep 'em coming. I hadn't really thought of soft proofing as a way to choose which media to use so it was worth watching just for that tip.

Thank you so much for finally breaking-down what "soft-proofing" and why/how I would use it. This also clearly helped me understand how to get a much better feel for paper impact and selection. I can't wait to do another screen recalibration and put my new learning to the test.

Hello, does it really matter to check the print resolution checkbox ? Does it give a quality enhancement over not checking it and sending the native resolution to the printer (and have no upsampling done by lightroom) ? Thx !

I can't find the episode where you discuss monitor calibration, can anyone share that link in the comments here please? Thanks

Question....I'm soft proofing for textured paper. I've proofed many times for lustre, glossy etc...never a textured rag paper. I cannot, on some images, reproduce the vibrancy of my image without massive clipping on what the paper can reproduce. Is this something I am doing wrong or just a limitation on the paper/printer combination? Thanks.

I’ve got a NEC PA272W with SV2. Do you have a recommendation for luminance and contrast ratio? I usually have made a separate calibration preset for general purpose viewing vs. a darker and lower CR for printing, but maybe that’s not necessary because of the soft proofing’s visual adjustment? I attended the Epson Print Academy in Los Angeles circa 2005 and loved it! Thanks guys!

Your monitor should be set one way and do it when calibrating your monitor. Soft proofing won't work unless the monitor is calibrated.

@@photoPXL that didn’t really answer my question.

Do you guys do personal calibration of your paper to the printer? Instead of relying only on the paper profile from the manufacturer?
@photoPXL
@photoPXL 2 жыл бұрын
No, we calibrate the monitor then use the paper profiles for the paper we are using. You can buy custom profiles for paper if you want but the paper manufacturer profiles are pretty good. With ImagePrint their profiles are the best I have seen. We'll be announcing printing workshops real soon.

You talked me into buying an Epson P900 then you showed how good Epson Print Layout is. Are you saying I'd get better results with Lightroom soft proofing that Epson Print Layout?
@photoPXL
@photoPXL 2 жыл бұрын
No, we are shoeing you all the ways you can make a print. EPL and the P900 are a perfect march. don't mess with something that works. Being easy is what it is all about.

@@photoPXL Thanks for the reply. You are right EPL really works great. I soft proofed a photo in Photoshop following exact direction and the photo came out dark. I immediately put that photo in EPL and it came out perfect. Glad I don't now feel the need to do soft proofing in Lightroom. Thank you also for your very educational videos on printing. I quite printing years ago because I never got good results. With the P900 I'm printing again. I would have never heard about the ease of P900 without your blog.

Also, the new Epson's are native at 300 / 600 not 360 and 720 a la the 7570 and 9570. Not sure re the 700 and 900 printers.

OK have I missed something. With the greatest of respect this is still unclear this is all very good but I have difficulty understanding the work flow. Let me try to explain. I can not send my Pro Photo RGB image to any pro printers. The good ones accept Adobe RGB in a TIFF/JPEG file. This means that I have to save the image as one of the former files as well as Adobe RGB. Then I need to convert to profile other wise I would have an sRGB with a tagged Pro Photo RGB colour space and that's impossible to work with. Is this stage to be completed before I have soft proofed, as changing to a smaller colour space will affect the colour of the image yet again. The situation is going to be compounded if I chose sRGB for a website. I feel that the soft proof dialogue box should have a few more check boxes. It looks to me that I now need to import this into Photoshop CC and start again. I have 6 rendering intents in Photoshop opposed to the two in LRC. I also need to change print size and finally check sharpening, Can anyone feel my pain. Maybe I should just duplicate the image flatten the image and then do it all in Photoshop CC with split screen two up in play.
