Lightroom is absolutely killing it lately.

Great summary. I like the improvements. Notably the Denoise which I must say rivals that of Topaz Lab. I like the addition of the curve onto masks BUT I wish they added the HSL panel to the masks for more color control over selected masks areas. Could be a game changer.

Another great video - as usual. Now - hopefully there will be further explanations on: 1) what is the Create Stack feature and how to use it, 2) how to use and deal with Adaptive Presets, 3) what is and how to use Raw Detail and Super Resolution ?? - and of course when should we use Denoise, Raw Detail, Super Resolution (should we use it first, in the middle or at the end of the workflow.

The AI denoise is awesome - did a lantern walk and also some crowd shots at a gig - 12800 iso. I'm happy with a noisy image than no image, but the denoise made a massive difference. Thanks for the updates on the masking too!

After watching I tried out Lightroom's NR against Topaz Photo AI, which I have been using for a while. Topaz does an excellent job, but sometimes leaves weird artifacts or undeveloped areas, and it can be too heavy handed for my taste, even when turned all the way down. Lightroom's NR doesn't have many adjustments, but also does a great job, less heavy handed and more natural looking to my eye. It's a great start, and will only improve! The big advantage is not having to export to a third-party app. However, the effect is baked into the new dng file created by both LR and Topaz. If Adobe could somehow make this a non-destructive adjustment to the RAW file that would be amazing. If you want to make adjustments to the amount of noise reduction you'll have to start over with the RAW file. Topaz doesn't retain the last used settings (does it?) so you'll have to remember how you processed the previous image. If Adobe could somehow make this a non-destructive adjustment to the RAW file that would be amazing.

great update breakdown.... just wish Adobe had kept the manual noise reduction sliders as the primary way to NR, rather than tucking them into a drop down panel. I know most photographers that are editing larger volumes of images, and only need a small adjustment made, wont be using NR AI

Remember the bad old days when new features meant buying the latest version and those who did not update often got stuck in old versions that had potential support problems due to having the rest of the platform having moved on. I was resistent to the Adobe subscription move a number of years ago but as time goes by it seems that every month real advances are made. The masking addition has me reaching for PS far less. Only recently started playing with adaptive presets and the platform just gets easier and more valuable to me every week. For $13 a month, it has to be my best return on investment of any of my photography activities. I have not purchased any add ons in years because Adobe stays on top of the industry and adds features to keep it ahead.

Good news at last. This was the month I was grudgingly going to fork out for Topaz

I need some AI masking for real estate. We often take bracketed exposures because windows get blown out if you expose for the interior. You mask the windows to get a good outdoor exposure from one bracket while maintaining the indoor exposure from another bracket. An AI mask would make this so much easier!

Glyn, photos in my library that need such things are generally JPGs, scanned from old prints, JPGs re-photographed from old slides, and JPGS shot on old DSLR's. LR's Denoise doesn't work on JPGS. Even if you export the JPGs to DNG and try it on those it still doesn't work. Hopefully they will have JPGS included soon.

I've been wondering how long it would be before they brought the Topaz-esque denoise Ai to Lightroom and to be honest it's well overdue.

I just did my update and I'm trying it today, going to compare it to Dxo, but I noticed when you use the D noise AI you can't then apply any super resolution? It's like it's either one of the other that's your choice? Do you know of any work around? Other than saving the file and then a resolution increase? I would just think once you create the D noise version you should be able to then apply super resolution but anyway thanks great video

Hi. Great Video as per usual so thanks first of all. I use CC not Classic and it won’t let me use denoise on my Sony ARW files, but I notice the Photo you are using denoise on is indeed a .ARW file. I wonder if Classic allows this but not CC, as it frustratingly converts all my Sony ARW files into TIF files on import and I can’t find out how to stop that and maintain the ARW file type. I’ll contact Adobe perhaps as I really want to use this new functionality without having to use DNGs. Thanks again!

Hilarious. I just bought the DXO PureRAW3 after a trial; I was so impressed! And then LR comes out with their own AI image enhancement software for grain in shadows.

Yes great summary. But Denoise will not run on my PC. I do not have a high end GPU but everything else runs ok. Any feedback from others on it erroring out?

These are great. I wonder why Lightroom doesn't have a "Negative Mode" for when you're working on images that you convert from scanned negative, so all of the controls are't reversed.

My LR is very hit and miss detecting people in masks, even when the person is over 50% of the image. Any suggestions why this should be. My hardware is a new Mac Mini M2 so ample processing power and all software is up to date.

What hardware are you using? Is it CPU or GPU intensive?

Hi Glyn, have you had any reports of Lightroom crashing on startup following the latest update? I am an Apple user and updated yesterday and Lightroom refuses to open crashing during boot up! Would love Denoise but not able to access it so far!!

Tested on a portrait and the denoise did nothing... Is there any settings I need to do? It also took 45 minutes for a 24 MP-file.

I have just deleted a comment where I said Lightroom denoise crashed my computer! Since then I tried again. To my amazement, not only did it work but with an under exposed image specifically taken for the test, Lightroom denoise hammered Topaz with its better colour and detail. It does take longer with 50 and 61mp files, but the results speak for themselves. My only comment in these early stages is that they may not be sharpened as much as with Topaz. It's not a hard problem to solve and depends very much on the subject. Well, worth a try!

The Denoise needs to have internet in order to work or it can be done offline?

I still prefer the Topaz denoise

If it's not, the denoise function should be added to camera raw...that would be great, Adobe.

Iam Leica shooter only, where RAW is DNG.... but not supported by this new denoise functionality. Why I pay monthly fee to Adobe, if my native DNG files are not supported?

little question: I have the 2019 macbook pro with lightroom 12.3 and a windows laptop too, when i update the person masking does not work anymore! go guess why!? (Working perfectly on 12.3 version) so I wanted to know does the April update will fix that ?

Ugh, the open as Smart Objects Layers in Photoshop doesn't exist in latest Lightroom CC, only Classic.

Hello Glyn, I am struggling to get any straight answers, my Mac (2015 Os Monterey) is uptodate, my LR is Catalog 2-2-v12 Ircat is uptodate. In my develop section in LR under 'Noise reduction', it is saying 'Denoise is not currently compatible with this photo format' I know there is a newer Os upgrade 'Ventura', so I am wondering if my mac is too old to support the Os Ventura and the new version of LR 2023 Ircat with the latest updates eg Denoise. Adobe search has not been helpful, neither has asking the question in a search engine! I will need to consider buying a new Mac if this is the case 😳

What about the CPU melting when exporting photos? did they worked on that?

It works very slow my PC has 16g ram and i5 and it takes 16 minutes to do the job.
