David (BOH-ee) was so diverse and creative but more importantly he didn't care what the industry was looking for. He made the music that spoke to him and we were all just lucky to come along for the ride. Never be another like him.

This song was recorded 50 years ago on February 4 - the band is The Spiders from Mars - Mick Ronson on Lead Guitar/Harmonies, Trevor Bolder on Bass, Mick Woodmansy on Drums. Saw him live on the “Diamond Dogs” tour. I think it was my second date with my wife of 42 years.

Another great artist I grew up with. David Bowie was an English singer songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. Bowie was always at the pinnacle of creative and evolving music, style, theatrics, characterization, and innovation his whole career. I honestly doubt you will ever see or hear so much variety from any other artist. His wife Iman is indeed gorgeous (a very successful model from Somalia), and a wonderful woman in her own right. She was a huge fan of his and used to go and see him in concert before they were finally introduced. It ended up being one of the most enduring and endearing relationships in rock history. When he passed away it was like losing an utterly unique creature from the face of the earth, like an endangered species being snuffed out. I said the same about Prince.

I took my daughter Melissa to see Bowie in Atlanta in 2007. One of the greatest live shows (3 hours) I've ever seen. Nothing like 10,000 people shouting, "Awww, wham, bam, thank you ma'am." from "Suffragette City." I saw Labyrinth, too. Bowie was indeed a rock star, and his wife, Iman, truly beautiful. David created a persona, Ziggy Stardust, who he performed as for a few years. After that, he changed lineups and his style continued to evolve every new album or so. "Heroes", "Let's Dance", "Suffragette City", "Is There Life on Mars?", "Ashes to Ashes"... yeah it's a rabbit hole for sure.

Woody Woodmansey, Spiders From Mars drummer and the only Spider still alive, still has a Bowie tribute band called Holy Holy, along with Tony Visconti, Bowie's long time producer. I got to see them a few weeks after Bowie died. Such a great show. I was also fortunate to see about 20 of Bowie's shows between 1976 and his final tour in 2004. What an outstanding writer, singer, actor, artist.

Yes to the David Bowie rabbit hole! Welcome! I can’t say enough about him as an artist, so I’ll just say his music saved my life and leave it at that. Definitely check out Space Oddity. It’s one of his earliest songs, which is amazing given how sophisticated it is! He tried his hand at a lot of different genres, so you will hear a lot of variety; no two songs sound the same, really. Lots of great suggestions in the comments, but they focus most on his earlier work. I would also recommend some of his 90s stuff, when he got super heavy and industrial - Hallo Spaceboy is a great one from that time, and there are amazing live versions out there to check out. Also I’m Afraid of Americans. His final album, released on his birthday just two days before he died, is a jazz masterpiece. Enjoy the rabbit hole, friend. Oh! You should also check out the video of him putting MTV on blast for not playing more videos by black artists. It’s from 1982 or 83. I miss him.

It was the Ziggy Stardust tour and he performed the whole album, in order, for the first set. It was amazing! Looking forward to you seeing you go down this rabbit hole. You're right to plan to do "A Space Oddity," it's one of the essential Bowie tracks. You should also do "Golden Years" if you haven't done that one yet. You'll love it. He's had many phases to his career, and "Golden Years" was in a very interesting middle period for him. A later track that I like a lot, that I associate with the movie Lost Highway is "I'm Deranged." When I hear it I always feel like I'm entering a dream world or nightmare. It's definitely haunting. If you want to revisit Labyrinth, do "As The World Falls Down."

mick ronson..underrated guitar licks...bowie has a huge library of completly different songs ...each record was vastly different than the next...this is mid 70's ..he had early and late and then he had 80's then he had 90's oh and 2000's.fame ..gean genie...diamond dogs..sufragette city...blue jean ..lets dance im afraid of americans ..he had a band called tin machine that did some way different bowie tunes and jump was in there around that time...the bowie/queen collaberation "under pressure" i could go on and on

Every time Bowie put out a new album he'd hire a completely new band.

The question that you have to ask about Mr. Bowie is did he follow trends, or did he create them? He was a force in the industry for an exceptionally long time, so I suspect it was a bit of both.

Its hard to explain, but as a 11 to 12 Yr old I thought I was in on a secret, I couldn't believe that my childish little world somehow felt that Bowie knew exactly what we were doing and feeling, unfortunately the world and music has definitely lost our Starman to the universe that at least we shared for a speck in time.
