After his death, I was reading tributes to him online, and someone said something like: "If you were alive in the same era when David Bowie was recording, you hit the cosmic jackpot." I couldn't agree more.

Yes...we were incredibly lucky. Went to many concerts, partied with the band, etc. He actually called our apartment once. lol Made my day!! Wish he had been calling for me. lol

One of the great things about Bowie is you never knew what to expect with each new album (other than it would be great). Each album had a theme and genre of it's own, but Bowie would reinvent himself for each album (and for each movie role).

I found out like 2 weeks after he passed. I was locked up and I was saying that I wanted to see him live and was told that he passed 2 weeks ago and I didn't believe it until my brother told me. I read his rolling stone tribute and man it brought me to tears.

This was David's glam rock era and nobody did it better. You would have to listen to the Ziggy Stardust album to get the concept of the song. Ziggy Stardust was just one of the characters he created during his career. For me he'll always be the Starman in the sky now.🌟

I particularly loved him in his “thin white duke” phase. Except for when he got sick towards the end, he aged so well-honestly better-looking in his 30s 40s and 50s than he was at this younger stage.

David Bowie DEFINED what the 80's pop music would be... in the 70's. He set the stage a decade earlier. A true genius. He will be missed for sure, but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Starman!

I Agree his work between 1970 -1980 was absolutely amazing! The only other artist who compared for me in that decade was Neil Young, but Bowie did in the 70s what the Beatles did in the sixties, and of course he was good mates with Lennon! RIP John and David.

Of course Bowie is a legend beyond legends, but kudos also need to go out to his guitarist, Mick Ronson, who came up with such classic hooks in so many of Bowie's great songs, this among them. What a fabulous sound.

You can't address this era of Bowie without acknowledging Mick Ronson's beautifully sculpted guitar orchestrations and lines, imo. RIP, Mick and David. A fabulously fertile partnership out of the gate.

Pretty much grew up with Bowie, was thirteen-fourteen when Ziggy Stardust came out and saw him a couple times - 1978 and 1983 - and the man was a legend. His death hit hard because he did not make it well known he was fighting cancer and had just released a new album a few days before he died in 2016. I still miss the man.

I have loved the artist called David Bowie since about 1974. His catalogue is enormous - one of my favorites which wasn't a hit was "Sorrow". Simply beautiful. He had the sweetest, wittiest personality and I miss his smile.

And that last album, "Blackstar", gets so deep into lyrics about death. He was the only one who knew he was dying besides a few others when he made that album. After his death, if you go back and watch/listen to those two main videos/songs off that album, they hit you in a whole new way. Very deep & dark, from a man facing his own mortality. 🌚🌚🌚🌚🌚

This is part of the themed "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" album. There's a loose story involved whereby Ziggy is an actual alien from space - the Starman - who lands on Earth and becomes a rock star named Ziggy Stardust. Very loose "story," for sure, but that's the meaning/background, in any event.

Bowie wrote one of the greatest songs ever recorded (on top of Under Pressure with Queen), called All the Young Dudes but he gave it to a band called Mott the Hoople. Their version is great, but I would check out either Bowie performing it at the Isle of Wight, or, when Bowie joined Ian Hunter, Mick Ronson, and Queen to perform it at the Concert for Life.

@livingfilmmaker I love that song! It's so nostalgic. Since you mentioned Queen: early in their careers the four men were very happy they could open for the well-known Mott The Hoople in the UK. Now everyone in the world from 5 to 105 knows Queen. And there will certainly be those who say Mott The who? That’s just the way it goes in show business I guess ;)

This would explain why All The Young Dudes always had the sound of Bowie to me so much more than Mott the Hoople. It just screams 1970's rock party anthem haha.

Starman is part of the Ziggy Stardust phase and is about an alien or aliens coming to earth during a time when the earth would be dead in 5 years. It's very dystopian. Diving into Bowie's catalog is like diving into the ocean or launching into space. I recommend All the Young Dudes which is a song he gave to Mott the Hoople but was written as part of the Ziggy Stardust album. Yes, Bowie is a genre unto himself, but like a great master artist in order to see the entire painting one must listen to the entire album. Diamond Dogs, Aladin Sane, and Station to Station are conceptual in that regard. He tried to remake himself with each album: Ziggy, Halloween Jack, The Thin White Duke, etc. I will be here forever if I keep going down this rabbit hole. Recommend: Lady Grinning Soul, Jean Genie, Oh, You Pretty Things. And so much more.

David Bowie performed this song in July of 1972 on a BBC television show in England called Top of the Pops. For many, it was their first introduction to David or for those who knew him it was their first introduction to the character Ziggy Stardust. It was the opening shot of an explosion of uniqueness and creativity that continued until his demise in 2016.

Me too. 3 time. Saw Ziggy at Radio City; saw the Thin Man tour and the Glass Spiders tour. Also saw him as the Elephant Man. And sat next to him for a short time at the opening of a NYC club. I was tongue-tied. Yet I had no problem dancing a short time later with David Johansen. Ah the after hours clubs of NYC in the mid to late 70s: miss those days.

This song is from the album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Bowie's high concept album about an alien who comes to earth and forms a rock and roll band. I'd suggest checking out the whole album from first song to last and it will explain this song better. A masterpiece of rock, one incredible album from one of our finest!

Like quite a few artists that broke out in the 70's, David Bowie fell out of fashion for a short while and then re-appeared with renewed style and sound in the 80's and a whole new group of fans discovered him. Let's Dance was that album and Amber will want to hear more from that genre of Bowie. "China Girl" and "Let's Dance" would be the picks.

One GREAT Bowie song that you have not yet reacted to is "Heroes"...hard to say favorite Bowie song, because there are so many masterpieces....This is the Tunnel Song from the movie Perks of Being a Wallflower (I know it was "Landslide" in the book)...but this may be my favorite song of his of all time.

Really recommend his collaboration with the Pat Metheny Group, This Is Not America, from The Falcon and the Snowman soundtrack. It is a gem of a song. Listened to it recently for the first time in decades. Such a great song.

As a decades-long Bowie fan, I am so glad you reacted to "Starman". "Cat People" I am sure you will love; be floored. Just make sure it's the movie version. It was in two movies: "Inglorious Bastards" and of course, "Cat People".

Do not do the remake he did of "Cat People". The movie version only. He did that with Giorgio Moroder, who worked with Donna Sumner.. His singing is so sensual and erotic on this song. This song is what made me a fan. Then came "Let's Dance" right after.

Finally!!! Another Bowie incarnation. I love them all. Bowie was always including space in his songs, Life on Mars, Major Tom, etc. There are those that are convinced Bowie is an extraterrestial. Pretty sure that's Mick Ronson on guitar and Trevor Bolder on bass. Amazing in concert.

Bowie was a true artist at everything he did, apparently he was a good painter, sculpture amongst other forms of art. IMHO what ever he chose to do he would excel at, and finally when I heard of his passing it hit me quite hard as I grew up with his music from the start. R.I.P star man.

This song is from the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which was a concept album (more or less). To really understand the meaning of this song, you have to hear the entire album, especially Five Years. I love that you released this review today. Thursday, 28 April is the 50th anniversary of the release of this song as a single. The album, as a whole, was released 16 June 1972 and is considered Bowie's break thru album, as well as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Over here in England, David Bowie is still a major part of Christmas. He narrated a Christmas film called The Snowman, as well as did the music. If you get the chance to find it online, it’s still shown every year here on the telly during Christmas. It’s adorable ❤ Jay will like Let’s Dance because Stevie Ray Vaughn played guitar on that track for him.

Agree with Jason Remy, time for some Bowie from his glam-rock, glory era with Mick Ronson on lead guitar with the Spiders from Mars. Starman was awesome but so are legendary bangers Suffragate City, Moonage Daydream, Panic in Detroit and his epic, Width of a Circle. In an era of utter musical brilliance, David Bowie was one of the brightest lights. Enjoy! 🎵

"The Jean Genie" is another hit from around 1973 (the year my parents were married) that you might be interested in. Speaking earlier from your last Go Go's reaction, the all female group Expose did a song called "Point Of No Return" as well as Nu Shooz doing a song with the same title but completely different. Check them out guys! Starman is a film back in 1984 as well as a new DC character in Stargirl on the CW played by Joel McHale.

If you love sax then Young Americans is a must! Totally funk. And, yes, do the recorded version not the live on TV version that’s online. He had a strained throat during the performance so it’s not the best.

Okay for me personally when this album came out I was about 15 16 years old somewhere in that vicinity and of course being a child of the sixties and seventies I was not shy about experimenting with marijuana!! Whenever I hear songs from this album or Ziggy Stardust it always reminds me of sitting in my friend's car and smoking weed and listening to this album on his 8-track stereo!! The sound system was awesome and the inside of the car looked like a Cheech and Chong movie!!(thick cloud)😁 That's what hearing this song brings back in my mind!!

I saw Bowie in 1974 and am a huge fan. Amber, he would have loved your phrase "He is a genre unto himself" that was brilliant and so true.

That song was also why he got mentioned on an episode of Doctor Who. In "The Waters of Mars", the first human colony on the planet is called Bowie Base One.
