Let's be real here. If Andy actually HAD seen this movie in 1995, there's no way he would've wanted a toy based on Buzz. He absolutely would've wanted a toy Socks, instead. Everything about Socks the cat screams "made to be sold as merchandise".

This movie is way too late 2010s/early 2020s to be something that Andy watched, unless Toy Story was set in some utopian alternate future where Covid never happened, Russia didn’t provoke WWIII, and American culture didn’t regress after 2014.

@@alexgomez6723 The film itself says at the beginning that it's the reason Andy wanted a Buzz Lightyear toy, that watching THIS film made Andy obsessed with Buzz Lightyear. I know, it's stupid, and there's no way this film would've been released when it says it was in the Toy Story universe, but that's how they're trying to link this to Toy Story and milk that franchise.

The irony is Buzz Lightyear of Star Command had the same theme of Buzz needing to learn to have friends and work with people, but it was handled much more logically. Buzz Lightyear had a partner he was close to, his friend was seemingly killed, and due to the grief of losing his close friend, he becomes sullen and wanting to work alone. And the rest of the supporting characters are there to help him learn how to work with a partner again. And that was just a quick, direct to DVD kids show that Pixar themselves didn't even care for, yet they did a worse job of the same basic concept. It's sad.

Plus had better versions of characters like this. Booster was a better example of a slightly inept newcomer than Izzi, and XR was a better example of a robotic sidekick than Socks. Though Zurg in that didn’t have much of a good motive besides “I’m evil and I wanna turn other people evil too” unlike here where we actually see his motive and it’s more understandable. What's even more hilarious is their pitiful attempts to fit this movie into the Toy Story lore. Basically, they say that this movie came out in 1985, flopped, got sold and remade into Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and Andy found the original movie on a VHS tape. I don't know which is more unbelievable: that they supposedly made a live-action scifi special effects powerhouse _in 1995_ that would have made ILM puke in trepidation, if it was technically possible to film at all, or that they made such a film, and did a big marketing/merchandising push to kids...with an interracial, married lesbian couple and their child as main characters, fleeting and low-key as they were, in 1995. I mean, remember when Ellen came out on her show? I do. That was in 1997. That was tame as tapioca, and they STILL had to negotiate with the network to do it AND put a disclaimer in front of the episodes from then on! Hell, you know what would have been a better framing device? It starts with grown-up Andy going to the movies, possibly with a kid of his own, to see the fancy new reboot of the cartoon/movie he loved as a boy. Boom, done. It's barely even a framing device, it's basically _actually what happened in real life._

Not just that. In 1992, there was a huge dust-up over Murphy Brown becoming pregnant out of wedlock, and that was an adult-targeted show. Pixar would have us believe that not three years after that, a feature film aimed at children would go farther than is frequently tolerated NOW.

I feel like the theme could have been reinforced more if we were actually shown moments where Buzz’s refusal to let others help caused problems. Every time something bad happens, it’s because someone else screws up; it’s no wonder he wants to handle it alone! Why don’t they show us that he needs help, rather than just telling us? Why does Mo have to be the one to constantly interrupt the plot by being inept? Why did the goblin turn on the stove?

Try to imagine Chris Evans in a fun, schlocky comedy romp aimed at kids but fun for all ages. Just try. 1. This is definitely not the movie Andy saw, and not only for there being lesbians in a 90's kid movie. This story makes Buzz much less heroic, it's a story of introspection and guilt, stuff I like on it's own, but it wouldn't have inspired the same cheering of "Take that Zurg!" when he played with the toy in his birthday party. If he managed to understand everything at his age, that the hero and the villain were the same person, he would have realized that there was nothing to cheer for in this tragedy. The only reason they added that disclaimer was to retroactively say Andy was a good kid for liking a movie with LBGT content in it, which leads me to: 2. The lesbians were the main focus, even if it was only 2 seconds of visual confirmation. Be it that they decided from the beginning to leave it there or that it was a PR reaction to their support of "Don't say gay" bill, they were so obsessed with making the movie adult in the hopes that the "pixar heartwrench" would validate the lesbians. That lead to it's identity crisis, not even The Phantom Menace struggled that hard between balancing stuff for kids and veteran fans.

What's funny is that the animated film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is actually more diverse than Lightyear. Rather than a boring cast consisting of humans who are 90% people of color, there's a whole plethora of alien species who come in all sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes. Hawthorn should have been Buzzes' wife. They could have wanted to start a family together but because Buzz is so dedicated to getting home with time jumps, he eventually has to face her being gone. ok... let me get this straight, so following thier logic of timetravel, theres a 70 year old buzz that wanted to undo everything, but theres a past self trying to stop that from happening to prevent the current timeline, because if it was undone this timeline wouldnt exsist, which mean there can only be one timeline, which means the only explanation for future buzz is that he will eventually become the villain. but that cant be true because buzz would know nearly everything that wouldve happened, so that must mean hes from an alternate reality and alternate realities are possible and the movie made a bullcrap excuse for conflict... good fricken job i guess... you really shouldve kept the idea of toy story 2 and made zorg his father... there wouldve been a lot of ways to make it a twist even with the audience who watched toy story 2

This feels more like discount watered down Halo or Mass Effect than Buzz Lightyear. On some level, I can appreciate a darker animated sci-if film as such a thing is seldom explored in Hollywood, but the choice of IP and the execution of it all was extremely questionable. Buzz Lightyear is supposed to be goofy, over the top, lighthearted, and old fashioned in some respects, as the character was inspired by old sci-fi serials like Buck Rodgers and Flash Gordon, instead, they made it this drab Xbox cutscene that only resembled its inspiration in name.
@MichaelAarons1701

I think some clarification is needed. After Warp “died”, Buzz was in that emotional shut off period where he didn’t want anyone else because the risk of reoccurrence with losing someone close to him might happen again. He only rejected Mira because they tried to shove her with him and he was doing the lone wolf bit as stated above. He even watched her training and was openly impressed by her. XR he was more confused about but tried once the LGM’s proved he was immune to long term damage. It was only after he was worked on by the disjointed LGM’s getting the Johnny 5 treatment that Buzz slid back into rejecting partners. Booster just kinda got swept up due to the plot and Buzz ultimately learned that a partner(s) is/were still a precious asset that he just forgot to consider due to grief. Movie Buzz was actually kinda an arrogant jerk and dismissive without any insight and argued up until Sir Notinthismoviemuchlonger stopped being a plot point and the whole space flight story began. But it’s still a major compare and contrast that 22 years ago, Buzz Lightyear could be written as someone who had teamwork issues and went through loss far more eloquently on TV than with 100’s of millions on the big screen from the original company. And was actually fun.

The old "Star Command" cartoon wasn't perfect but it handled the concept WAY better than this thing. Also, SPOILER making Zurg and Buzz the same person because of time travel shenanigans is the WORST IDEA EVER. Zurg is supposed to be an alien evil emperor. You know what would've worked better? The original Buzz Lightyear movie. Outside of that, why not make Buzz an orphan and have Star Command be an intergalactic police force with humans being a recent addition to the Galactic Alliance, and Buzz being a young recruit. He's shown to have top marks but has issues with teamwork and facilitating hard decisions, showcased when he hesitated shooting a practice drone holding a fake child hostage or attempting to negotiate with it. Even have his lone-fighter mindset reinforced not only by having him pursue a criminal (revealed to be an informant of Zurg) alone, abandoning his teammates prior, but have him physically retaliate against a snide comment by an alien partner directed at Buzz because he's human. Yes, I'm taking a lot from Mass Effect, but bear with me. After capturing the criminal, Buzz interrogates him.and we see a bolt on his hand with Zurg's Emblem on the head. After stating "Zurg is coming" he slams the bolt on the back of his hand hard into the chair, causing him to atomize in a bright explosion. All the while, a broadcast on TV shows an alien planet explode at the exact same time, and Buzz catches sight of it when it shifts to Zurg in a dark silhouette, announcing that he will "destroy those who have ripped scars across the stars; who stain the black void red. Know that I am Emperor Zurg, and I will reep this galaxy." Have Buzz and his team (maybe including Warp Darkmatter from the first movie, and have him act all buddy-buddy with Buzz up until the second-to-last segment of the second act and revealed to be Zurg's right hand man) lay siege to a stronghold with Zurg in it, and have Zurg take out Buzz's team quickly, but noticeably ignore Buzz. Then Buzz attacks him head-on, and Zurg grabs his helmet, lifting him up. Zurg would say "So this is the great Buzz Lightyear, Star Command's star recruit. It truly has been too long since we've last met." And then throw him back into a room far away from the door they were both at. After the second act, not only reveal that Warp is a double agent, but have Warp say "After what the Axiom Collective have done, I thought you'd be on his side." Buzz says "What about the Axiom? How does that affect me?" Then have Zurg walk in, saying "Everything." He then goes on a long speech Talking about how the races in the Axiom Collective have wrought Hell on the races in the new and fairly strong Zurg Empire, citing that the affected planets have banded together in a new Empire under a ruler that already took out 5 stronghold worlds alone. It's then revealed that Zurg was affected when he says "Even my world of Morph in Quadrant 9 was not safe." It's then that Buzz says "Morph? What do you know about Morph? It was destroyed by an ancient war machine malfunctioning. I would know; they found me in the rubble." Zurg removes his helmet saying "I know, I hid you there," revealing himself to be (DUN DUN DUNN) Buzz Lightyear's father. It turns out Zurg was taken as a slave by the Axiom Collective and put Buzz in a hypersleep capsule in a blastproof vault, but was taken before he could activate the Star Command marker so they could find him. Even showing that most of his body is mechanical, a result of him replacing his broken body with a modified battle suit meant for Axiom soldiers and advanced prosthetic limbs. Buzz at some point breaks out and swears to stop him. Zurg, outraged and confused as to how his own son could turn against him, attempts to stop him from destroying the ship core of the Entropitus, Zurg's flagship and lead battleship. The ending would be fairly rote material: Buzz stops Zurg, Buzz's team saves him, big ship go boom, and have a big celebration where Buzz celebrates what momentary peace he has. Then an after-credits showing Other Zurg races retrieving Warp and Zurg from sealed escape pods.

If this movie is a movie in the ToyStory universe, this mean that (if we assume that ToyStory happens in 1990-200x) this movie is supposed to be created around 2000. I'm not homophobic but i'm pretty sure we weren't too happy about showing LGBT stuff in kids movies in 2000 (especially if we are talking about Disney) so it makes it kinda unrealistic in a way. Then again we could imagine that the ToyStory universe is devoid of discrimination.

How Pixar managed to make a movie about something as cool as futuristic space soldiers and interstellar travel this boring and forgettable is beyond me. Don’t watch this movie, unless you enjoy virtue signaling and the cast acting like children who have never been told, “No,” after receiving the slightest bit of criticism. Just turn on Starship Troopers or Alien, and you’ll have just as good of a time (an even better one if you’ve never seen either or just like good sci-fi movies in general).

I'm pretty sure the "backlash" about that lesbian kiss was mostly "journalists" framing it as the main reason the movie isn't doing well, because it's free outrage to generate clicks. Then a few dumbasses from both ends of the spectrum leaned in on it, and it blew up more than it was actually relevant to anyone. It's a strawman to deflect actual criticism and then play the "bigot" card to get a few braindeads on your side for the screeching choir. It's almost theatrical how manufactured, yet superficial these elements tend to be, and how it's always shitty opinion posters claiming to be journalists who then make molehills into mountains.

I have a question that nobody else has asked before, in toy story 2 it's revealed that Woody was the main character of a 1950s puppet show called "Woody's Roundup", Woody is simply a piece of merchandise from that show but the puppets they used in the show would be the original Woody's Roundup characters, so whatever happened to them? Did they get sent to a museum like Woody was going to be? Or did they simply deteriorate due to time and were eventually discarded? If that's the case then did they escape and are now out in the world? Did they just accept their fate and decide to be put in the museum like toy Jessie and Stinky Pete? And if Woody was such a huge character back then that means that there would have to be other Woody dolls like him but we never see any of them, I think it's implied that he's a rare piece of merchandise which is why the chicken guy took him in the first place, but if he was such a phenomenon then Woody dolls should have been mass produced left and right!

Here's a better question; how are the Toys alive in the first place? Do the children impart a bit of their consciousness in them, and then they come to life? How are many of them able to move their limbs when some don't have joints? Also, all the toys don't have vocal cords, how are they talking? And how are they able to see and hear? You need both ears and eyes and a working brain to translate the visual and audio stimuli.

I sort of knew this was going to be bad, no matter how badly I wanted it to be good. The Toy Story series, (it stopped at 3. There is no Toy Story 4. At least not in my heart.) Is by far my favorite franchise. In the pioneer days of CGI, Pixar was by far the GOAT, and had amazing storytelling abilities, and great VAs to boot. Once Disney bought them, (because they were bleeding money, and unable to compete with the masters of 3D themselves), their content dropped a bit, but not noticeably so. That is until the dark age of animation known as “The Woke Era”. It can also be called the cash grab era, because alongside pushing an agenda, they were also mostly soulless. I knew Lightyear would be no different, and it breaks me to see my childhood reworked, revamped, and rehashed to hell and back.

Why would Buzz think resetting the timeline would erase the others, when it's already clear that TIMELINES SPLINTER OFF, since an alt-universe Buzz from a different timeline is already right friggin' in front of him, meaning those timelines endure despite changes in causality? And why would Future Buzz, also knowing that alternate timelines exist, not consider that there is ALREADY a timeline where they didn't crash the ship, and that his changing the past will merely create another alternate timeline? Oh, yeah... the writers are too stupid to understand the concepts they're playing with.

Zerg-Buzz hasn't failed or abandoned them - but this other Buzz is stopping him from saving the MANY in favor of the FEW who he JUST MET.
