The Bible describes many customs that may seem out of place in our culture today. What should we do with these passages? How can we know whether specific instructions in Scripture were meant only for an ancient culture or if we should still observe those commands today? In this message, R.C. Sproul helps us recognize the difference between temporal customs and universal principles in Scripture.
This message is from Dr. Sproul’s 12-part teaching series Knowing Scripture. Learn more: www.ligonier.org/learn/series...

13 When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,” 14 she took off her widow’s clothes, (covered herself with a veil to disguise herself) and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

Heads covered? Heads not covered? I never got the correct answer. If I had to guess his lesson is that the head covering is a matter of conscience but not being certain it is better to error on the side of humble obedience.

Around 25:35 he quotes Romans 14:23: "But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin."

I always thought that the covering of my head was a sign of respect and of recognition of the glory and holiness of my God. I never had as understanding that I was giving submission to men. As a teen and with no boyfriend it would never cross my mind to wear to church a veil for a future man, no catholic girl was thought that principle, we did it as an act of humbleness and of awesomeness of being in the house and presence of God . It was a beautiful custom which we turned into an act of showing off your beauty or new hats. Now we have mostly ended that hat wearing custom and only in Catholic Churches of Latin members you still can see veils in them but even in them it is disappearing.. If I am not mistaken, Jesus covered His head when He prayed. Is a sign of the time that the God Holiness is disappearing from our hearts and minds. Forgive us LORD.🙏📖✝️❤️

I’ve never heard of Jesus wearing a head covering in prayer. Can you please share where that came from?

@@steveyokeley3612 Mr. Yokeley, thank you for asking where I have gotten the idea thatJesus coveredHis head while praying, Is not in the Bible but I have seen that done in christian movies and in paintings and those images of reverence from Jesus toward His Father seemed so natural to His Persona that , even though that gesture is not recorded it doesn’t preclude that it might have happened. I like to think it did. God bless you.

Being silent in church by women is understandable however along with that statement is the statement that the woman should go to her husband for help understanding things in the Bible. Can you tell me how this works if the husband has little or no idea how to help his wife

"Principle vs. Custom" Kind Sir...the Title does teach that there are verses in the bible...that are misinterpreted from the real meanings... Yes, that is very true. And one of the reasons that there are over 3,500 "DIFFERENT" Denominations, Doctrines and Dogma's, ETC! All over the world. And ALL groups say, "WE are right and YOU are wrong! And We get OURS from the bible!" But that problem is small; when one (VERY rare) realizes that EVERY Bible has enumerable errors; like spelling, grammar, myths, additions and deleted, REAL contradictions and down right intended Bold LIES from satan; from Gen to Rev. Believe it or not. But sadder, and so true. That 90+% will NEVER believe that Truth from Jesus, who IS the only true God. And worse: when most Christians; having bold LIES; satan will cause them to "rationalize" it is True. How sad. Proving how powerful he is. To Brain Wash any one...Unless they accept the truths. And seek the truths from Jesus and detour around the LIES of satan in every bible. For I did that for 69 yrs from age 6 to 75 yrs old. And I would have still believed that to my grave. But 15 yrs ago, that all changed for the good. Believe it or not. When I cried out praying to Jesus; and asking "WHY do we have untold different beliefs" all over this world. And please give me Wisdom, Understanding and the Truth. Amen! For ONLY then: will Jesus interrupt satan's evil tricks: to believe the bible has NO errors. Because they ARE there to the wise. Of course, I doubt any one would believe; what I have said above. For satan has brainwashed Billions of Christians for 2,000 yrs. And what the Pharisees and the Sadducees did; in NOT believe THE "truth". Whose name is Jesus. And He was crucified solely: because He spoke the truth and nothing but the truth. Sad, but True. End of Story and I rest me case... ...In any case kind Sir, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN!

This is a bad post and worse argument. If Satan can change scripture at will, we are all damned. There is no hope in a world where God has no means to reach us. There is no hope in a world where you only have your own thoughts and best guess. There is no hope in a world where even the existence of God can be nothing but uncertain. Please reconsider what your doctrine actually is saying and devote yourself to Jesus instead of your own reason.
