Hoping you get to see Godzilla Minus One someday! Contracting issues have made it difficult to get out there to many countries, but once it hits streaming, I'd love to see your thoughts on it. It could be an oscar contender for best Foreign Film except for the fact Japan has already nominated something else :( But maybe they'll nominate another!

If you’ll forgive me the long message, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for your content over the years, I’ve watched you since the first video as like stories of old, you’ve given me, a disillusioned guy with a film studies degree renewed appreciation for the art of reading media, and delving deeply in a world, where I often get laughed at for overthinking the themes, motifs and specifics of production that affect the outcome and how people read film And by extension how we philosophies about what we consume. This was one of the most thoughtful lists of films that I have ever come across, and it’s only fitting that it came from you I truly look forward to what you have planned in the coming year and beyond. Even though neither of us has any idea of who the other person is, I at least know that there is a kindred spirit who loves doing this, sharing these ideas, and talking about the things that impact us, as much as I do. Congratulations on your recent marriage, enjoy your honeymoon, and I wish you all the best! Happy holidays, unknown friend

Went in blind on The Holdovers for a last-minute date night where we just picked the movie based on whatever fit after our busy work day and I can't even express how much it blew me away with how emotional I felt. My heart was aching for all 3 main characters in different ways and just the way the movie conveys the critical need for human connection to change and grow really was just so powerful, all packaged in a warm, familiar "Dead Poets Society" tone and feeling. So happy it hit yours and others top 10 of the year!

Yes, The Holdovers is a movie that has also "stayed with me" for days and days after viewing. Superb pitch-perfect performances, and I love how everything doesn't tie up neatly in a bow Hollywood-style. The film feels like a slice of real life. Will be shocked if Giamatti isn't nominated for best actor. While Cillian Murphy is the obvious (deserved) front runner for Best Actor Oscar, I wouldn't be mad if dark horse Giamatti walked away with the prize. He crafted an extremely memorable character.

Of all the movies I saw in 2023, I enjoyed the Irish language film, "An Cailin Ciuin"--"The Quiet Girl"--the most. It's the film whose story, sounds, images, cast and characters have stayed with me the longest. I think about them every day.

@@goldenfire5 We feel the final scene of “The Quiet Girl” so deeply because of the way the director, Colm Bairéad, holds the characters’ emotions in check up until that moment of the film. When Cáit and the Kinsellas are having their last breakfast together at the farm that morning, the heartache hanging over the scene is almost palpable. But Seán and Eibhlín only exchange glances with each other over Cáit’s head and make small talk about whether the potatoes are cooked or not. They refuse to acknowledge openly what Cáit must be feeling, for they’re struggling with their own internal defences as they anticipate the grief they’ll feel once she’s gone from their lives. Before we know it, Cáit, Seán, and Eibhlín are getting into the car and driving down the laneway to take Cáit home. We feel a lump in our throat as Cáit looks silently out the rear window of the car at the happiness she’s leaving behind. Later on, Cáit tells Seán and Eibhlín the story of how her father lost one of their heifers in a gambling bet, and how her mother didn’t speak to him for a month. It’s a reminder of the toxic family life waiting for Cáit at home. Finally, we arrive at our destination. Cáit’s mother, Mary, seems happier to see her cousin Eibhlín and Seán than she does her own daughter. Nevertheless, we hope that when the group sits down together around the kitchen table over a cup of tea, there will be an opening to discuss the possibility of Cáit having further visits with the Kinsellas. This hope is dashed, however, when Cáit’s father, Dan, arrives home in a truculent mood, fresh from having had “a liquid supper”, as he calls it. Sensing Dan wants them gone, Seán tells Eibhlín it’s time to hit the road. We can see that Cáit is heartsick now that her last few minutes with Seán and Eibhlín are ticking away. Outside in the yard, Eibhlín and Seán each give Cáit an affectionate but brief arm’s length goodbye. Then they’re in their car and driving down the laneway. Our emotions well up to the breaking point as we see Cáit watching the Kinsellas drive away. Surely, we think, this can’t be how the story ends. Then Cáit seizes the initiative to burst through the emotional constraints that have kept her and the Kinsellas from saying how they truly feel about each other. She runs off down the lane after the Kinsellas’ car, hoping to catch them before they leave, while memories of the past summer with Seán and Eibhlín flash through her mind. She leaps into Seán’s arms, calling him “Daddy”, and again, more softly, “Daddy”, leaving us with mingled feelings of relief and sorrow, but not without a touch of hope. “She says no more than she needs to say,” Seán once said of Cáit. With her economy of speech, Cáit has chosen to call Seán by the one word that sums up everything she thinks and feels about him, of what she holds their relationship to be, along with all the implications and consequences for both of them, now and into the future, flowing from her sudden, loving declaration.

I felt that way about The Boy and the Heron. People were pointing out technical flaws, but I don't think the movie was trying to present itself with a firm structure. @DThron
@DThron 6 ай бұрын
@@rawfoodphilosophy7061 it probably won’t help you like the movie much better, but the gag is that it’s about a guy who imagines he’s a special genius, but who is actually an everyday dumbass; pretty good at his job, but not really great, constantly making excuses for his actions without really understanding what motivates him.. He has loads of advice, philosophical quotes, and so-called rules…all of which he fails to follow, and spends most of his time cleaning up after his own mistakes, while judging everyone around him harshly - like, say, most all of us do on social media. The movie is a comedy about the stories we tell ourselves about our lives vs the objective reality. We all like imagine we’re special outsiders, but we’re really one of the many - like anyone. That’s my take. But like I said, if it doesn’t work for you, all good. There are a lot of great KZfaq breakdowns of it, though, and who knows, if you see it again, maybe it will strike you funny.

Some things I found great about The Killer were the ways the killer improvised for his goals. The recycling bin scene is great, but as was discarding the rifle parts, and finally his haphazard and comical entry into the gym and client suite. It's extremely insular to his perspective making teasing out his motivations difficult; the girlfriend relationship and motivation felt a bit hollow but that seems deliberate - it isn't so much love or human connection he is concerned with and moreso annoyance at his personal life and free time being intruded upon. No grand sweeping romantic ending or displays of affection, dude just wants to chill on the patio

Amazing to see The Killer being appreciated. Edit: he didn’t come out on top. Tilda’s role was supposed to be one of the most important ones. Her speech about deliberately being oblivious to the inevitable terrible death ahead of people who have such a “job” as they do is supposed to reflect the anguish that awaits him. There’s even a subtle clock sound in the end, as “your time is coming”. Reminds me of that amazing Shakespeare’s quote used in Westworld “these violent delights have violent ends”.

Clearly overrated yes. Too long, boring drama that he tried to mask by overediting and adding intense action music. The twist in the end you saw from miles away, while still being quite badly done. Also that bomb was one of the biggest anticlimaxes I've felt in a movie in a looong time, he should have done it with CGI instead.

I don't agree with the second part. It's very good but inmensely overrated. People had already made their minds way before it came out that would be Oscar winning and all time greatest, simply because it was a drama by Nolan, starring Murphy, RDJ, Blunt and Pugh, which are pretty big names nowadays among most young people. The film had its big bunch of issues, like the ridiculous overediting, the unnecesarily intense music, and its pretentious direction. It is so embelessed with itself that it's like it tries to create emotions out of nothing, instead of creating something in the story that causes those feelings. And the film is always rushing, always focused on the next thing, never in the present, trying to lead to a climax that is never fulfilled, not even when the story provided moments for that.

Ah man, when I think about my top 5 for this year, a lot of it is actually animated films. Takehiko Inoue's "The First Slam Dunk" and Yuzuru Tachikawa's "Blue Giant" are at the top of my list. Obviously Spider-Man: Across The Spider- Verse is on there, and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem". Miyazaki's "The Boy & The Heron" rounds out my top 5, and Netflix's "Nimona" gets an honorable mention. I hope you got to enjoy these movies even if they're not in your top 10! Happy new year!

Loved your take on Oppenheimer, I relate to this so much I saw it 3 times too. The 1st time was the only time I thought I’d watch it. 2nd time my friend asked me to come. 3rd time my dad wanted me to see it For the 1st time, I was overwhelmed and pretty tired, I admit my focus wasn’t great 2nd time I got the film and appreciated it 3rd time I saw it, there’s was like a clarity behind everything and the dialogue stood out in 4k and I felt the movie more Nolan absolutely smacked it with this one, if not for circumstances I would never have perceived the movie the way I eventually did Great video as per

Great list! Thank you for sharing. Mine looks almost identical. I really liked your description of Oppenheimer as a piece of music that washes over you. I tell people who haven’t yet seen it to not worry if you don’t grasp all the details. I think that’s partially the filmmaker’s intention. Keep up the good work. Enjoy your honeymoon. 👍

Haven't seen all of these, and I'm bummed I missed seeing anatomy of a fall this year, but I share the Holdovers, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, and May December in my top 10. My favorite you didn't mention was Saltburn but I know that's not a movie everyone will enjoy as much as I did

I have to disagree. I didn't think it added much to the genre. Considering the plot, I feel a lot more could have been explored. The opportunity for a gnarly cosmic horror was abandoned for the sake of simplicity.

Hey Tom. I really appreciated this video, and this list both allies with my own personal top ten of 2023 selections and inspires me to see some new content! I live over in North Carolina and recently had a chance to meet with Thomas. I also used to live in Aotearoa/New Zealand and am very happy that you will be there on holiday to celebrate your recent marriage. It's a truly beautiful place and the Kiwis are lovely! I lived in Wellington before and it is my favourite city in Aotearoa. Lots a beautiful, local hiking (literally walking distance from the city) and Mt. Victoria (which you can also walk to from Wellington's city centre) holds a very cool scene location from the Fellowship of the Ring. Hopefully, you'll get the chance to see for yourself!

Elijah, that's so cool! I use to live in Wellington and absolutely love Aotearoa. Between uni studies and the pandemic, I didn't get to explore as much of the North Island as I would have liked during my time there (about 18 months), but Wellington will always be a special place in my memories!
