Lilliburlero - British March

"Lillibullero" (also spelled Lillibulero, Lilliburlero, or Lilli Burlero) is a march composed by Henry Purcell that became popular in England at the time of the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
Henry Purcell composed the melody of "Lillibulero" for a march in 1686. The melody is found in the quickstep, which is the second half of the piece.

Feels weird to see all these scenes from Barry Lyndon without the Barry Lyndon version, but I like the very joyful tone of this one. And as always, really good work. In case you need ideas, you could do a "marche des éclopés" with a bunch of 1812 Russian retreat paintings/scenes from movies.

Yes, you are quite right Bruce, BBC world service used this tune for many years. It was used as the opening theme to many of their Medium Wave and Shortwave transmissions especially before the World News broadcast. Not heard much now as many of the Worldwide radio services have closed down.

Somb 2:38 eone mentioned hearing Lilliburlero on the World Service. Does anyone know why the BBC scrapped it as their signature tune?

As hinted in earlier replies this music with various words played a role in the 1688 dethronement of James II and in 'Troubles' at that time in Northern Ireland. I would suspect that the recurrence of such Troubles in the late 1960s might eventually have made it untenable to use the music for the purposes of the World Service.

Quite possible that the Northern Ireland "troubles" had something to do with it. Big pity for it recalls "our" revolution - the real conclusion of the English Civil War and a constitutional monarchy. I worked in West Africa in the early '70s and it was great to hear that stirring tune so far from home.
