I just played a long drawn out board stalled game, where my out was eventually drawing a rise of the varmints. Vraska threw a big wrench in that plan, as well as making my Rutstein pretty useless. So she has her moments, obviously it won’t always be like that 😅

Fun interaction with Taii Wakeen is that you can turn deserts into fireballs to the face which is cool.

Yea, I think they missed the fact that the activated ability affects ALL noncombat sources for the rest of the turn, and that it worked on players too. I also think it's funny with Magebane Lizard too, as a "build your own Ruric Thar"

32:10 terror of the peaks second ability is slightly different from ward. Spells with "can't be countered" still have to pay 3 life targeting it.

Yeah I thought that too, although LSV specifically says that they "would" design it as Ward these days, which I take to mean that while it's not the same as Ward it would have had Ward if the card was designed today. Kind of like how there were lots of creatures before Deathtouch was keyworded which had triggered abilities that destroy things they get into combat with that aren't technically Deathtouch but those cards would have Deathtouch if designed today.

Initial impression is that you'll need some crazy synergistic builds to compete with people that opened any decent amount of rares, of which there are many. Green especially is crazy strong on the rares and mythics. sidenote : thank you for releasing the rares video before the set released =)

First time playing with Mana Drain tonight after I opened it in my prerelease pack. Everytime I played it, it just was absolutely disgusting how broken that thing is. At one point I was at 4 life, my opponent was at like 30. Came back and won because I countered a 5 drop of his. Just disgusting stuff

If you don't know, big score were never designed to be in any limited format. They were supposed to be an aftermath set which you can't draft. But because aftermath flopped so hard they scraped it and put the cards they already did for this sets aftermath in this set

Min 1:51:30 Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot you missed sth about this card, it is able to target a player too and there is red common in this set that pings for 1mana (Deserts also work), so you can fireball people with this.

Indeed and not only that, there is also the desert lands that ping your opponent. If you have a few of them this card can be pretty dangerous.

Unlicenced Hearse is actually just a grow threat, you don't even really need to be hitting important cards from yards, just T: commit a crime, this gets bigger on blocks is pretty sick

Note about taii wakeen, because desserts also ping, its not unreasonable to use it as a finisher. It can kill out of nowhere if you just dump all your mana into it and play a desert.

One thing I believe was missed about double down, is there are several good plot for 3 outlaws. You don't need to take turn 4 off as you can instantly hit and copy on T4.

Worth noting about the Jace ultimate, it's copy all spells, not just sorcery and instant spells. He will double your creatures on the turn you ult. Way better than they realize, at least I think.

A card like “double down” seems like it’s primed to work getting in a set like this than it might in a different set because of Plot. Plot sets you up to be behind for a turn or so hoping to get better value later. Casting double down on turn 4 plus a plotted outlaw (or two) gets that lost tempo back immediately which is sweet.

It looks like Geralf the Fleshwright's zombies only get counters if either your 1st spell created/summoned a zombie or you cast a third spell during your turn.

It’s worth mentioning on Double Down that it works with plot. If you plotted an Outlaw the previous turn you can get immediate value that way.

Aven Interrupter is also very good against Spree cards, since you have to pay the additional costs again. Three Steps Ahead and all hard counters are also very strong in a format with Plot. You get a warning they are coming. Nexus of Becoming does not work with Loan Shark. Loan Shark's ETB checks for 2 total spells, not another spell (it's functionally another spell because it counts itself). Because you made a token Loan Shark, you didn't cast it.

I think it's gonna underperform expectations. A huge part of the other swords was that it gave them evasion from their colors, making it easier to connect and get the combat damage trigger. This one doesn't do that, so it'll be a lot harder to get the main benefit of the card

5 mana for first attach, which just like all equipment, gets completely blown out by removal. as well as deathtouch/combat tricks being live against it more than other swords, doesn't excite me.

With Memory Vessel, you have 2 turns to play your seven cards while your opponent only has 1 turn. So if mana is a limiting factor, it's still not symmetrical. That said, your opponent will still probably be able to play the best of those seven cards. Also Memory Vessel works with cards that reward you for not casting stuff from hand.

Regarding big score cards. The list is 1 out of 5 packs in this set so the big score cards show up about the same frequency as other mythics in the set.

One thing to add about Taii Wakeen that you didn't explicitly mention is that it also makes your burn spells scale up. Suddenly you can have steer clear kill their 6/6 and draw a card on top of that.

ok well i'm glad i checked here before cutting Reanimate from my deck. Never played with the card, and I was thinking "well if i get something real big i'm gonna lose 5-7 life, that seems like a lot, and if i get something small, i just lost some life and i only got a cople mana's worth of discount." but i'm gonna put this back in my deck now. EDIT: Reanimate has GIH WR of only 53.3. I mean that's not bad, but it doesn't seem like a "solid A" card would have 53.3.i suspect its because of what I said, that there will spots where I wish I could get that great bomb but I can't afford to take 5-7 life loss .

Terror of the Peaks + Calamity 4 (calamity enters) Saddle calamity with terror and attack 10 (from original terror) 5 (from terror copy 1) 5( from terror copy 2) 4 + 10 + 5 + 5 = 24 damage, before you hit your opponent

I get the initial 4 dmg from casting Calamity and the 10 dmg upon saddling with TotP and attacking, because you create two 5/4 token copies of TotP, triggering the original TotP twice, but that's 14 dmg total before combat damage. Where are you getting the other 10 dmg in before combate dmg? EDIT: Ah wait, I forgot the fact that the tokens also have the original's ability, so they activate off of each other lol

He is absolutely right about it, because the avg cmc is usually between 2-3 but you draw a land roughly 40% of the time and lose 0 life when you do. Pretty sure that's what he meant.

Just a correction.. archmages newt is terrible. It is not when it attacks like the bronco. It is when it deals combat damage to a player. So a 2/2 for 2 that has to connect to get a spell flashed back in the late game is going to be magical christmas land.

@@ich3730 im not sure what your definition of nowadays but 2/2 for 2 with no relevent ability hasn’t been a good stat line in close to 1/2 a decade. (newts ability is basically irrelevant when it doesnt have any evasion and the effect is basically a late game effect.) i mean it can be good in constructed formats where you could Play cheap interaction to clear the way kinda like dreadhorde but dread arcanist but thr arcanist has trample (which is relevent some times) and the spell cast is free. 2/2 for 2 is fine… when your talking commons.

You could use Jailbreak Scheme to make the newt unblockable, then saddle it and flashback something cool. Probably won't come up that often, but will be sweet when it does. Also, a 2/2 for 2 with no text is baseline a D+. Archmage's Newt's text won't come up very often, but it's still a 2-drop you can use to trade for your opponent's 2-drop and be ok with it.

Rules question: If I commit a crime by stealing a card from someone's MTG binder, and that card has a "When you commit a crime" ability on it, do I immediately get that effect in the game currently being played? Or do I have to have a card like that already in play when committing the crime?

I honestly think reviewers will have to change their ratings, either be a lot more stringent for what is an A or create a new S tier these sets are so pushed that in a year, if they keep doing it, half of the damn set will be in A tier.

But there's still plenty of D and C cards at all rarities. And they don't need to adjust the ratings when the ratings are about their Limited context. As they've pointed out in previous recent reviews, there are plenty of cards that read strong and would have been high picks in the past but are Cs now. The baseline of what is good just adjusts.

"Where's the bad news here?" regarding a 6/5 trample with double-upside for 4 Well, the bad news is that when you systematically opt to remove all downsides and drawbacks from card design because it's "too complicated," you dramatically limit what design space can exist and just keep cranking up the rate of power creep. And, apparently, the average text-box size.

I'm not so sure. I think we've seen from recent examples that "power creep" is really good for a limited format. Look at NEO and MOM, 2 great limited formats with very high power cards.

@@PowerNapProductions Those sets worked with higher-power because everything was higher-power, so you don't have the usual Prince experience. But that's sortof the thing - to make it work, mythic, rare, uncommon, common all have to be pushed tomes of text. I feel like there was a level of upping the power could have been achieved by removing wastes of slots like Demolish that didn't necessarily require us to also make the 2/3 flier for 3 statline into a D-.

They still make cards with downsides. Like the Scorpion Dragon that gives itself -1/-1 based on cards in hand. And there are other ways of giving cards virtual "downsides" without making it explicitly a downside abilities, like having restrictive mana costs, weak stats relative to their mana cost, or having abilities with very niche applications or difficult activation costs. It's better for the game that cards as a baseline work and get better with added synergy. It's how Limited has avoided having literally unplayable cards like what used to be the case.

Regarding Kaervek and copying cards, i might be too much off the loop, but that sounds like some serious Alchemy sheet. I guess I understood copying spells on stack, or creating tokens that are copies of permanents, but now we even "casting the copies"? :(

What didn't make sense? It's an extra combat spell plus a first strike trumpet blast and gets you treasure. Because the first mode immediately untaps all of your creatures and the second gives them first strike, it can be used defensively when the opponent attacks to catch them with a bunch of untapped first strikers.

Because most decks aren't going to be those 3 colors, so making your mana worse in order to cast it would be actively bad and F is how they say just don't play it or go out of your way to play it.
