I thought that the Sooner OL was good, and got better as the game went on. They ran about 33% each Counter/Inside Zone/Outside Zone, and there was good stuff in all of them; Counter dominated the stats because of scheme, but the Zone plays were an important balance to it and they were at least efficient. There were a few more issues 1-on-1 in pass protection, but there weren't a lot of repetitive problems. The adjustment issue brings up an interesting point. That Counter adjustment couldn't have been called if it weren't already in the gameplan, so being good at in-game adjustments really starts with being good at preparation (both in base offensive design and in week-specific gameplanning). If you're good at adjusting, it means that you've got a good gameplan vs. all of the opponents different looks so that, when you see which looks they're using to defend you in that particular game, or in particular contexts, you've already got a whole play-calling sequence that you're ready to activate. That's what I'm seeing from Riley, because it's not just Counter, it's a whole complement of plays, run out of the same formations, that protect that Counter adjustment and build off of it. That's why he can still run Counter late in the 4th even though he's been running it the whole game.

Thanks! Yeah, every Oklahoma game I break down there's always something a little unique and interesting that catches my eye. For some reason my KZfaq TV says that the Cal/UO game isn't available (even though I watched it live and have it set to record every college football game...). It was all a little weird because of the penalties both ways, but somehow we kept getting those clutch conversions on 3rd and 4th...until the end, anyway.
