Napoleon Bonaparte is one of the most famous people in history. But he was not the only Bonaparte making waves in the 19th century. His brother’s prominent positions in the revolutionary government opened the door for him to seize power in the first place. And once he had it he set his 7 surviving siblings up with thrones of their own and political marriages that gave him an advantage. Napoleon was demanded his siblings obey him, and often clashed with them about how to run their own kingdoms and families. True, I don't get a sense that he spent much time with them since he was sent to school in France at only 9. So he may have had gotten 'only child' personality even though he technically wasn't an only child.

Joseph is such an interesting case to me. He seems like he just wanted a comfortable, luxurious life of...whatever, and was content to let his younger brother take the helm as head of the family, even as it dragged him to some pretty wild places. Not a lot of 19th century men would be so chill.

I'm currently reading Adam Zamoyski's book on Napoleon and he kind of agrees with this in the early part of the book (still reading so I don't know if it will be the same later). One example he gives is after the "whiff of grapeshot" incident and Josephs marriage, Napoleon got into trading economics and would request his brother to buy with his new dowry certain materials to try and make a massive profit, since he knew from government documents where each resource's would be selling well. Joseph however ignored all of Napoleons requests which went on for a few months, mostly because he just didn't give a shit and was living a happy peaceful life with his new bride.

It was a good idea to include the bit about Bernadotte. The turbulent relationship between Napoleon and Bernadotte often put Joseph into a precarious position not only because Joseph was brother-in-law to Bernadotte, but because they had been friends even prior to the marriage of Desiree to Jean Baptiste. What is not often covered in histories is the intense correspondence between Napoleon, Joseph and Carl Johan in the last year of Napoleon's first reign. The air was thick with intrigues as Napoleon tried to win back Bernadotte's favor and he went through Joseph quite often. What is often left out of modern histories since WWI is the relationship Bernadotte had with Napoleon's siblings and mother. In short, they all adored him, probably because he was the one man who stood up to Napoleon, and often times when Napoleon and Bernadotte were on the outs, the Bonaparte sibling and Madame Mere would take Bernadotte's side, infuriating the Emperor. Add to all this volatility, that until 1808, Napoleon quietly considered Bernadotte his heir in the event of an early death prior to the birth of a son. The reason was twofold: 1) Napoleon believed only Bernadotte had the military and political skill to maintain the Empire. Whereas he had marshals who were talented generals, none had the political skills and experience as Bernadotte. 2) Because of Bernadotte's relationship as in-law to Joseph, and his friendships with other Bonaparte siblings, Napoleon felt he was the only marshal, other than Murat, who would protect his family no matter what. Finally, as an extra tidbit: Napoleon considered Bernadotte for King of Spain. However, Bernadotte said he had no desire to be a king unless chosen openly by the nation in question, and declined. Napoleon felt that Murat was not up to the task, so in the end it came down to Joseph, who, as mentioned, who was not pleased to trade kingdoms.

The Indian audience will not appreciate this attempt to glorify British imperialism. The Indians are still salty over Britain's refusal to hand back the Koh-i-noor & blocking India's bid for permanent UNSC seat. Victoria & Edward VII never set foot in India & were crowned by proxy through their Governor-Generals. George V attended the Durbar after being duly coronated as British monarch, so your notion that the British monarch was crowned from India is completely baseless. By the time George VI came, the onset of WW2, financial constraints & growing struggle for independence made the Indian masses reluctant to satisfy the ego of the British monarch. Besides there was nothing unique in the coronation ceremonies of the Delhi Durbar. It was a plain imitation of the British coronation ceremony, the only exception was that the British king would receive homage from the Indian princes on this occasion, issued medals for outstanding public works & bestow knighthoods into the Order of the Indian Empire & Order of Star of India upon 'loyal' Indians. Both the orders were junior in terms of precedence & no Indian was ever incorporated into senior orders like that of the Garter or of the Thistle.

@@anubratabit3027 I’d actually say perhaps making a video on the 1911 Delhi Durbar be an opportunity for Lindsay to discuss the results and the effects of British colonialism and how the event was used as a symbol of western colonial rule. Doing a video of such an event could go both ways. It can be discussed in a delicate diplomatic way or used to condemn western oppression.

Maybe in a future video you can expound on Bernadotte's story. His life story is actually very interesting. He actually had a brief stint as France's Minister of War and his becoming Crown Prince of Sweden was an attractive option because aside from his military reputation and the fact that Sweden wanted to be in good terms with Napoleon, he treated kindly the Swedish Prisoners of War at Lubeck. Also, fun fact, his wife actually refused to live with him in Sweden because she found Sweden to be cold and refused to convert to Lutheranism. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XIV_John

She'd visit the opera after the performance was finished, drive her carriage through the streets in the middle of the night, and invite street urchins into the palace to give them candy. I wonder if Princess Kate identifies with her? (Another case of a girl from a "new money" family marrying into royalty...)

And again another great video! Reminds me of the year 2009, when I discovered the book "The Golden Bees" by Daniel Henderson and read it within one afternoon, bc it was utterly captivating. It's a family biography about the Bonapartes in chronological order and I wouldn't be surprised if it served as a source for this video.

I wouldn't call Joseph an enlightened despot he sounded great for Italy and I'd say his brother was more despotic than him..and actually Napoleon wasn't short..he was actually pretty tall for a male back then Napoleon was actually about 5 ft 9 or 10 back then..and according to the history show mysteries at the museum which actually does research like you too..the actual theory is Napoleon died of hemorrhoids but did have stomach issues on top of that and he died of that and possible sepsis as well

I'm distant related to Caroline's first husband, Joachim Murat... distantly. Essentially almost irrelevantly related. It's more a "party trick" useless factoid than anything but kind of interesting to me. LOL.....
