Welders don't use polyester or nylon coveralls, because it melts to the skin. They use cotton because it'll just burn a pin hole.

Looking at buying a canvas tarp. Sherwin Williams has a 9'x12' (6 ounce) tarp for $15. As to your method of soaking the tarp, think you went about it the hard way. Hang it from a clothes line and pour/mix your linseed oil & mineral spirits into one of those bug/fertilizer sprayers that hold about 3 gallons. With tarp on clothes line, you should be able to get a more even coat on the tarp and it should also help speed up the drying time. Thanks for the video.

yeah, i wasn't really happy with this tarp in the end. It was much more heavy than I thought it would be. I think your method of application might work, but it might clog the sprayer, so be ready for that.

I sprayed mine and that works allot better. As far as dying I used walnut husk . But I live in the Missouri Ozarks and black walnut grows like weeds around here. Bark from hard wood trees can be boiled in water to also dye cloth. I'm not sure what's available in Utah. I always like making my own gear . Looks good.

True you can hang it and spray it to With your mixture. I’ve also used Thompson’s water seal Does great I did one yesterday.

Just curious, if the dye will work after the water proofing? Hope you post once done. One would think if its waterproofed then dye wouldn't work. And if it did work I would wonder if you used a dark color if it would turn out very light? Cant wait for the update good luck and great video. Keep them coming!!

+RealMcCoy I think I'll be doing the waterproofing and dye on a different tarp, one for my bugout bag. I'm not certain if the dye would take now that this tarp has been waterproofed!

Dying a tarp which has been waterproofed with a water based dye.... I don't know man... I predict it does not work... Any dyeing should be done before waterproofing or go with the old school method of iron oxide mixed in with the waterproofing mixture...

Mineral Spirits acts as a solvent to better distribute the BLO without incurring permanent offensive odor, in addition to accelerating evaporation/drying.
@OutnBacker4 жыл бұрын
Turpentine can be used instead of mineral spirits. For more body in the dried mix, use 2 parts beeswax or toilet rings + 1 part turp or min sp + 1 part BLO. You have to heat it very carefully to blend it together. I use a mortar tub available at Home Dept or Lowes for under $10. Way easier than a bucket.

perhaps rolling the oil mix on to the canvas with a paint roller was more efficient? i think water itself seals canvas tho. peace thanks for making the video
@lrnselfreliance7 жыл бұрын
+Rudra Pawo rolling or painting would have made the oil go much further. The oil was quite thick

Warning: I bought a 9X12 canvas (drop cloth). I did not unfold it. I put it straight into an open 5 gallon bucket. I did not seal it. I sat it outside in the yard beside my shed. I poured 1 gallon of boiled linseed oil in it. I let it soak for 24 hours. When I took it out to dry I noticed a whisper of smoke as I opened the canvas, the entire thing was scorched and smoldering. It was too hot to touch. I laid it out flat in the yard and it appears to have been moments away from spontaneously combustion. It could have caused a serious fire. BE CAREFUL

If you bunch it up, that can happen. After applying the liquid, spread the material out and don't roll it up to store for a good three weeks.

10:00 if you need to dye this, you need to do it before applying the BLO/MS mix ...

I'm looking at your process and thinking a black and yellow tub would be better. Add the linseed oil and mineral spirits, the tarp, mix, tarp, mix and so on. Move it around and mix it until it is all soaked up.
@CarrieGerenScogginsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize that the linseed oil and mineral spirits were that expensive, which made me realize why people just buy a tarp instead of making an oilcloth. I saw another video where the man saved what was left of the mixture in an older empty can of linseed oil for reusing it later. Looks like the cotton sucks it all up so that there isn't much left, that may be why he just used an old bed sheet.

Get yourself a 400 to 600 thread count twin size cotton sheet with camouflage pattern and coat it . It will be lighter for carrying on a pack.

So for anyone attempting this. Pre mix your mineral spirits and lindseed oil. You don't need to 100% submerge your cloth. You can cover half and leave the tarp sitting in the bucket. The mixture will drain out and into the bottom. Then flip your cloth around so the dryer part is at the bottom of the bucket. Do this a few times until the cloth is splotchy. If you leave it for a few hours the oil will naturally seep into the rest of the cloth. Then stretch out your cloth to dry. The drying time is significantly less when you use this method. -Keep in mind that any period of time you have the cloth sitting bunched up it is a fire hazard so don't leave it in a black bucket in the sun on a 90 degree day-
@robertclark27146 жыл бұрын
I had it in a white bucket in 80 degree weather and it started smoldering spontaneously. IT IS A SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD.
@booomer1809 ай бұрын
That mix is thin enough to dpray on... hang it on a line to spray it And if you eant to dye the canvas, do it before you seal it with the linseed oil. And make sure its really dry before the seal is applied. And wow... 60 to 80 dollars.? If you sprayed it on it would be less than 10 dollars.

If watching the method in this video doesn't queue you in to moving along to another channel for better instructional videos....Here's a hint as to the quality of information and logic on this channel..... The guy in video thinks he waterproofed a TARP then says, "If I don't like the color, I can always dye it later on with RIT dye."!!! Lolol, how's he gonna get the dye to soak in, he just expertly showed you how to waterproof(?) the fibers!!! Lolololol Most of the video is one big "face Palm!".

Don't even try it no it won't. after the boiled mind seed cures out side it is pretty fire retardant. there's videos of striking a ferro rod on oil cloths with the same ingredients as in this video and it didn't catch fire or even burn a bit.

@@mr.delacruz559 Correct. Just don't roll it up or pile it in some careless way before it's cured. I give it a good three weeks - not just one. Just because it feels dry does not mean it is safe to roll and store. Wait. To see my video, click here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abqpf9Cn0M_XXY0.html

I searched youtube on this subject and this is what came up. I would say this is an example of what not to do. I cringed when you poured both chemicals on the tarp. I appreciate you sharing your experience, but this is not the way to go about this. Good luck in the future.

mix the chemicals together before one douses the cloth would be a starting point. Using a container large enough for your cloth comes to mind also.
