Thanks so much! I mean, re: the stealing, it happens -- and as unsavory as it is, I wasn't as perturbed with the stealing as I was with the supplies that had been paired with the worksheet. I'm horrified because I can almost guarantee that anyone who tried that kit had 0% chance at success. :( So, hopefully this video helps to reassure people who have tried a kit in the past and not gotten far!

Great video! Thanks. I also believe the problem is this instant gratification world we live in-- there are individuals who expect perfection from the get-go-like work environment--it's basically everywhere-but "slow" wins the day. Best. 🎈

Thanks so much for the reminder to slow down and not rush to finish or expect perfection as a beginner. I love the worksheets you share on your site - so much more fun practice than writing an alphabet over and over. So appreciate your generosity and enthusiasm.

And I love that you are leaning in to the practice style that works for YOU. I so relate to not liking writing the alphabet over and over, but some people really dig that. I think the trick is to figure out what keeps you excited and motivated, and follow that. The moment this stuff stops being fun is also the moment you stop doing it (and stop improving)!

Thank you Lindsey for all the tips...this is so true about buying the wrong kit. I bought one at Costco's Canada a while back. It was called "The complete book of Calligraphy". There was two big wonderful books. One was all the instructions on how to write with an oblique pen and nibs, inks to use, and how to make your own, fonts with different styles and several projects, etc...and one exercise book with plenty of pratice sheets with all the Copperplate style alphabet. But...included in the kit was 3 cartridge pens and a few markers both with different width for another type of calligraphy (they weren't good quality so I gave them away) For someone who has never done calligraphy, I imagine it must have been very confusing. The artist of the book is american (I think) but the book was printed in China. So I got myself some nibs , suma ink and an oblique pen and used this book to get started. The kit was around $20.00 CAD which was not bad and they are good reference books.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for the kind words about the video! Your story about the calligraphy kit from Costco is a perfect example of one of the common pitfalls beginners can encounter. It sounds like the books included were quite comprehensive and useful, especially with instructions on various fonts and projects. That's fantastic! However, I can see how the inclusion of lower quality pens and markers not suited for the styles taught in the books could be confusing and a bit disappointing. It's fabulous to hear that you didn't let that stop you and took the initiative to get your own nibs, sumi ink, and an oblique pen. That's the spirit of a true artist! You've made a really important point about calligraphy kits: sometimes they are a mixed bag, and it's up to us to find the right tools that work for our style and preference. And at $20.00 CAD, it sounds like the books alone were worth the investment as a reference. :)

As a retiree I’ve been looking for creative ways to spend this crazy gift of time. When one is an absolute beginner the universe of calligraphy can be confusing but your video provides an ideal entry point. I don’t know whether to start with what you describe as fine point or with the broad nibs that look so fun and seem to offer a wider variety of calligraphic styles. It would seem that the skills needed for these two approaches are similar (?) nonetheless I feel there is a fork in the road on a journey I’ve not yet started. Given your excellent video I thought you might be someone whose opinion I would value. Where to start; fine point or broad nib?

Hi Paul! That's definitely a personal preference -- it's up to you to decide which kind of calligraphy is most exciting for you. This article might help you answer that question, though: thepostmansknock.com/calligraphy-101-the-ultimate-guide-for-calligraphy-beginners/ 😊

Yes, I will also slow down on doing calligraphy too. Are the kits from the store Michaels okay or not?
@LindseyBugbeeTPK
@LindseyBugbeeTPK Жыл бұрын
It depends on the kit! I started with a Speedball kit from Michael's in 2012 and it definitely didn't do me any favors, but that was over a decade ago, to be fair! I haven't browsed Michael's calligraphy kit selection in years, but a good kit will include, among other things, a medium flex nib like the Nikko G nib and a *brass flanged* oblique pen (not plastic -- read why here: thepostmansknock.com/5-reasons-ditch-plastic-oblique-calligraphy-pen/). I think to save money and start yourself off on the right foot, the very best thing you can do is compile a DIY kit. If you can find the supplies locally, awesome!, but you'll probably need to buy online. I've got a list of supplies listed here: thepostmansknock.com/the-ultimate-modern-calligraphy-starter-kit/

Hi Lindsey, can I ask where you/your hubby got your wedding ring set? It looks VERY similar to a set I had in the early '70s and I would LOVE to get a similar reproduction! Thank you so much for all the inspiration you give us all!!
@LindseyBugbeeTPK
@LindseyBugbeeTPK Жыл бұрын
Actually, it might be the same one! It's my late grandmother's wedding set. The band is leaves that fit into a gorgeous diamond rose engagement ring, which I rarely wear because it tends to catch on things. She got the set at a jeweler's in Denver ... in the 1970's. I love it because it's beautiful, but mostly I love it because it was Grandma's! (She was the opposite of me. She never wore the band, but never took off the diamond rose part.)

@@LindseyBugbeeTPK Could I ask you to take a pic of the set together and send it to me (I believe you would have my email as I've been following you for about 4-5 years and have purchased many times from you). I'd love to get a reproduction made! Thank you so much!
