Great video! I'm in Houston and can relate to a lot of the things you mentioned. Thanks for sharing your experience! I've been wanting to make some more CPA/Big4/Accounting related videos and share what it's like in a tax technology group. Waaaaaay different than compliance.

I’m in my first year (Tax) at a Big 4 firm too, and I agree with a lot of your points. One thing I would add though is a caveat about the hours during busy season. Some engagements are busier than others, and as a first year, it’s kind of the luck of the draw for you. I’m working 70-90 hrs a week, while some in my class are barely even working 50. The firms really do try to even out the work, but it’s a logistical nightmare to get it perfect so it’s inevitable that some will work more than others.

THAT'S GREAT- THEY SAY ACCOUNTING IS THE 'LANGUAGE OF BUSINESS' YOU'D HAVE A MAJOR LEG-UP FOR THE CFA BECAUSE THE FRA SECTION IS EXTREMELY DRY BUT YOU BASICALLY CAN BYPASS THAT ENTIRE BLOCK!

Great video! It's uncanny how I literally had the exact same misconceptions and realizations as you did in my first 2 months in Big4. I applied for the CPA and I'm torn now because I really think I'm gonna end up in Law so I'm not sure if it's worth my time/misery. Oh well it can't hurt.🤷‍♂️

I remember watching this 3 or 4 years ago. I was like 2 or 3 years away from starting my degree and I was so excited to learn about the accounting world and trying to find the best routines for a career plan in accounting. Anyway started my degree this year and I ended up doing computer science instead😂. But just watched your latest video thought I would go through your channel and realised that I am still glad that I came across your channel all those years ago.

I, for one, hated Public Accounting, but to each their own. I still prescribe to the theory that to make a lot of money, you need to be a critical employee, be an expert at something the company needs. After working at several jobs at Big 8's ( yeah I know a long time ago ), I didn't seem to be going anywhere, just making Sr. or Manager was painful, and Partner wasn't going to happen. It's not easy to get into a 'critical' position, when there's a sea of CPA's in a 8 story building. You're just another one. Good advice though and insight Lindsey, glad I'm not going through it again, once a lifetime is enough :).

@@LindseyDavis1 Years ago, the dress code was suits, in fact when we were on site at a clients, we weren't allowed to take off our coats. Oh man, I hated that, sitting in a conference room all day with no windows, and couldn't remove my jacket. I'm sure times have changed, but that truly sucked.

Great video, but each person has their own experience as you said. I am on my first year and we’re in busy season right know and I’ve got so much work to do that’s already a snowball but it’s great, I’ve been learning a lot and each day I’ve been more confident about my work in auditing

I've heard they try to make you forget about the most important things in life. I hope that's not true, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is :/ Also I'm not in public accounting, but I work in the private sector and I've noticed that using macros in Excel is extremely under rated. I'm doing things in 5 minutes that took 40 minutes before I came along.

Hey, do you enjoy working in Tax? Do you think its better than working in Audit? Also, if I want to work in Tax; should I do the Accounting BS/MS Dual Program, or should I go for a BBA in Accounting and then do a Masters in Taxation, that why I also receive 150 credits to do the CPA. What do you think?

Great Video! I have a few questions for you. How did you know you wanted tax over audit? I am stuck right in the middle and i picture myself being happy in either direction. Also, can you switch from audit to tax at the same firm? I have seen some of your videos but not all of them so i was wondering if you ever did an internship? I will be graduating in May 2020 with 150 hours due to my double major (Accounting/ Finance) and all we are ever told is internships are a must if you want to go into public accounting. I will never be able to do an internship due to my current non-accounting job and family obligations. So i was wondering how bad that would really hinder me in my attempts to go into public accounting.

You also might look into mid-size firms. I believe they are more-well rounded in terms of being able to switch from tax to audit. For example, I took a position as an "associate" with a diverse job decscription. On another note, I don't know whether you've considered it, but could you look for a paid internship for credit through your school?

I’ve been offered a position for Jr. Tax Accountant, focused in sales and use tax( New Jersey). What’s your advice on long term growth? I have a Big 4 (4 month) tax internship experience and some Accounts Payable (3 month). How much should I ask for salary? what’s the difference between Tax Associate & Jr. Tax Accountant?

Can you give some advice on how to get a Big4 job from your experience? Im a junior in accounting and its been rough trying to find an internship even though I have a 3.5 GPA and Im worried if I dont have an internship I will not be able to work at a Big4 company.

Don't get caught up in the 'Big 4' hysteria. In college the professors and environment push the Big 4, but when you get out in the real world, there's a lot of good accounting positions, You should strive for being a CPA, but working at a Big anything doesn't necessarily mean you won't find a rewarding career. You will, if you're smart, work hard and figure out how to help the company that employs you. There's a lot of accountants and CPA's out there, but not a pile of good ones.

IF YOU HAVE THE CPA AND YOU WENT INTO THE CFA YOU COULD BASICALLY GET INTO THAT BIGBLOCK OF FRA AND GO: ".....SKIP! SKIP! SKIP! SKIP! FLIPPING PAGES BECAUSE YOU'VE MASTERED EVERYTHING ALREADY- IF I EXISTED AND HAD THE CPA I WOULD HAVE DONE THE CFA NOT BECAUSE I WOULD WANT TO BC I'D BE IN A SUBSTANTIAL ADVANTAGE; LESS THAN 4% GOING INTO CFA HAVE THE CPA"
