Great video. I agree with the client folders. Asking for deadlines is critical. My first year I thought my senior would be the harder calculation on the tax returns. They were fine with it the first year, but after that it was on me. Great learning experience.

The great thing is that most of this advice applies to any type of corporate job. I've had a corporate job for the last 4 yrs. Also the best time to ask about the company's expectations for your role is during the interview. At the end of the interview the hiring manager usually asks if you have any questions and if they don't you should always find a way to incorporate your questions in your discussions.

Thanks a lot. This is helpful to know as I’m going through internships interviews. One is a big 4 and it’s intimidating but this helps me to relax and be confident in my ability to be a quick learner, research and ask questions.

I'm in nonprofit accounting rn and the asking for deadlines thing applies here too! I would sometimes get items that arent due for months and some that were due next week and a deadline wasnt communicated and I miss-prioritized. New hires: just ask the question! No one is going to fault you for clarifying your understanding.

I enjoyed this video, great insight. I’ve been a teacher for the last 8 years. I’m considering going back to school for accounting (is it realistic?). I have 2 kids and a husband. What areas of accounting are conducive to having a family? I’m introverted leaning, very organize and detail oriented (my husband would say, “type A”). Lol.

Fanny G Fanny G Wow, sounds good. I’m taking an accounting class at a local community college this fall, to see how I like it. I hope all goes well. What was your career before accounting?

A few thoughts on this: 1) the early career of an accountant is not very fun. It often involves very long hours and thankless work 2) if family life is important, I would suggest going the corporate route and avoiding public accounting if you can. 3) try to specialize in a subject matter that is in demand like international taxation, business valuation 4) regardless of specialty make sure you invest in yourself through accreditations like cpa, cma, cva , etc. Having this sets you apart from others How do I know this? I have many years of accounting experience and have seen the differences in career paths both personally and what I have observed of others

It's funny that I'm on the other boat and I wanted to get into teaching from being a tax accountant for better life balance with my kids. I can tell you public accounting is very tough for parents unless your kids are either old enough or you have lots of family help. Can you suggest how it's easier to break into teaching without education degree?

Stephanie From my experience, the main difference between big 4 and regional firms is the amount of overtime required year round. A big 4 firm keeps its people working busy season hours most if not all of the year. How is that possible? They oversell engagements beyond the staffing hours they have in inventory and under hire for future needs. Attrition from all of the overtime also plays a role. In a regional firm there is slightly less overtime in the summer. You won’t be working 60 hour weeks in June through August, but if they have some public companies as clients the hours will pick up in September through April. It’s because of the control testing requirements. Believe it or not public accounting was a lot better 20 years ago when most of the summer was spent on cpe and benefit plan audits.
