As a guitar player, one of the big questions you might have is whether or not the Line 6 Helix is still relevant in 2024. In this video, I have a special guest and we take a look at the product and discuss if it still has the features and functionality that guitar players need. We'll also discuss whether or not it's still a good buy. The Helix first came out in 2015 but has seen many firmware updates including the recent 3.70. Its features have surprisingly kept pace over the years with many new amp models and effects, dynamic cab IRs and routing options that inspired a whole generation of amp modelers. Also, with its extensive IO and USB connectivity it is an excellent Recording HUB for your home studio serving your audio interface needs. And it is also a great re-amp[ing device. But, its hardware has not been updated since 2015. Is it time for Line 6 to launch a new flagship modeler or can the Helix still compete in 2024?

Great video! One thing about re-amping.... I record a dry signal, as well, but instead of re-amping back out via a loop through the Helix device, I simply use the Helix Native Plugin. Very convenient and easy to quickly compare sounds in multiple instances of the plugin. Helix is amazing.

Just picked up a Helix LT for my Bass rig all I can say it is awesome for bass. 2 hours just flew by, seemed like 5 mins. So many cool ideas were coming to me just with a few blocks in the signal chain. I think this is a great unit for bassists let alone guitarists. Can't really see how much better it can get, seems like we've reached a plateau with modelling even though the Helix line is almost a decade old.

I just added a Helix rack to my rig. Ive been using the even older TC Electronics G System and what ever amp I’m into for about 15 years using the 4 cable method. The G system is rock solid but hasn’t been updated in who knows how long. The helix does all that it did with the added benefit of way more FX and routing options. Now my amp of choice is the Synergy Syn 2 (rack) with a Friedman and a bogner. I still think amp or pre amps are better than any modeler/ profiler. Plus having my core tone as outboard gear I don’t have to adjust every preset when I decide it’s too bright or not enough mids ect. But over all the helix has been a huge improvement to my setup.

Being primarily an acoustic singer songwriter utilizing the ability to use the Helix as my go to for live performance, I'd love to see them in a new firmware update possibly, add an acoustic based amplifier. The Helix is the only multi effects pedal all in one unit that you can run a vocal mic with its own set of effects and a guitar with its own set of effects, an expression pedal, and a looper with such ease. Having an acoustic amp model instead of having to use just a pre amp block and eq to make it somewhat an acoustic amp would be amazing. I also would love to see an always on tuner option for the screen as well like you both noted. Those of you that do acoustic solo gigs, you really need to look into the Helix. It was a game changer for me.

I hope the next Helix will work with all the presets you've already created, just having more CPU. I could rock the first version a long time because of all the time I've invested in programming it. Next version needs Phantom blockers on the XLRs (transformer balanced?) and fix the mic input (mine went pretty fast).

That's a great point and punctuates why Line 6 hasn't rushed out new hardware. There are a ton of considerations and their user base is key. Considering the compatibility between existing device I don't think it would be a completely new system...but they will need to update hardware eventually...

I absolutely love component modeling. Helix is obviously 2nd place in amp modeling. I only say that because, I have to add a lot of low gain to sound like the axe fx or the real amp. Once you do that the only thing axe fx has over the helix is just sheer amount of amps and component tweaking.

My copy/paste reply to Sonic Drive's video The helix is still a great unit and at around a grand, the LT is a killer deal and really has everything most players need and just about all the I/O options to be super flexible on stage. I have my singer's LT on long term loan as my all in one acoustic gig device where I have one row of blocks and in/out's setup for my vocal mic to do some compression, eq and a little reverb and then the main input/out has my acoustic guitar going in with some eq, verb/delay/chorus/etc added to that. It really is a great unit and takes no time at all to setup. I think the new amps they added recently are ok but IMO, the new cab/speaker/mic stuff they added not too long ago was the big game changer for me. It used to be a unit you HAD to use your own IR's to get a decent high gain sound and now, I'm able to get some perfectly acceptable sounds with the built in speaker/cab block stuff. I still think the speaker/cab/mic tech is nowhere near as good as the new Dyna-Cab stuff in my Fractal FM3 (or my singer's QuadCortex that I spent about a month with) but it's good enough that I wouldn't hesitate to pull out my little stomp HX during a show as a backup rig. Worth mentioning is that despite IR's being as cool and flexible as they are, my HX stomp sounds freaking AWESOME running no cab block into my UA OX stomp for cab sim, reverb and delay. It also frees up a lot of CPU due to how hungry those 2048 resolution IR blocks are.

I wish there was an updated version with a fairly decent size screen with an interface designed around touchscreen, including the option for mouse and keyboard for ease of use, but also has simple hardware controls as a backup. Like more reminiscent of the PC plugin I suppose, but with multiple ways to control. Like if you need to change a something before a gig and you forgot your mouse and keyboard, you could just use the touchscreen controls instead, or if the touchscreen stops working you can use the physical controls as a last resort. That's all I'd want from an updated version, not even different sounds, just updated controls & interface with plenty of flexibility options for control for ease of use. I know that a new product line is more likely, but I'm perfectly happy with a Helix Floor V2.

We all have different views about touchscreens. I actually feel the Helix's controls are still very intuitive as they are. I just say that to demonstrate it's hard to know which way Line 6 will go as feedback on current features is very different from different players.

@@swardmusic I honestly believe that the next gen of digital modeling is digital digital modeñing. I mean modeling existing algorithms in order to faithfully reproduce their sound. Fender did that with the TMP, specifically with the Boss Ph-3, the Boss BF-3 and the Boss CE-5. If they did it... why not Line 6? Juan repacking Helix in a new case would be a pretty dumb idea, considering they are not alone in that market share anymore.

Let me expound on this. Jimmy Hendrix had a pretty crappy rig by today's standards. At Woodstock he played through an out-of-spec Marshall which sounded like it was on the verge of self destructing. I used an original Rockman box to make some great sounding recordings back in the day. Any of today's modelers are capable of sounds equally as good if not better. At some point the processing power of the current HX line will be obsolete, yes? No? Same for all computer-based rigs; only so much it can currently do because of that limitation. I don't view that as negative, personally. However, the name of the game is making $$ & satisfying users. Most users want as much as they can get in their floorboard systems (not me). Therefore, companies are driven to "improve". Since current amp modelers are glorified computers, I wish companies would issue EOL specs on their gear at some point. Perhaps some already do. EOL = End Of Life, meaning it's no longer supported. Based on the processor in the unit the companies should have an estimate of an EOL for everything they make & inform the users of the scheduled/anticipated EOL when it's within no less than a year of EOL. What's left for the HX/XL stomp & Floorboard/LT? More ambient reverbs, more amp models, more pedal models. Sure, but there will always be users wanting MORE. And more stuff eventually means a need for more processing power. So they make a new unit w/a MEGA GIGA UBER processor & more *stuff*! Not 80 stomp boxes bout 800!! And in a year or 2 or 3, that, too, will not be enough as demands for more grow. Personally, I wish there could be a system designed that... (1) had the ability to increase memory &/or swap CPUs/motherboards. That's not such a tall order (is it) but perhaps a truly *flagship* unit could do that. It's the same idea as building your own computer or being able to modify your existing computer w/more RAM or a hotter CPU. Honestly, if I'm dropping $1500+ on a laptop or desktop PC it will have the most RAM & processing power I can afford & always with the ability to upgrade RAM. ((And for me, it *will* be used for 5 years min)) (2) let the user decide what FX & amp/pedal/IRs models they load into their systems. For example, let's say I purchase a HELIX floorboard...all of the fx are in a system library/vault that the user loads up as needed. By default, whatever is in the "vault" is in the floorboard. They don't ALL reside on your board all of the time. Why stoke it w/80 stomps when you only actually use/need 4-10 total FX at one time. If you need more, load them. It seems every ounce of RAM & processing power would then go to what is actually used. Random thoughts when considering getting another multi effects unit...

This is the unfortunate reality of digital gear. Amp manufactures used to build their amps for longevity. It’s actually not the best business model. Companies that make digital gear developed recurring revenue streams. That’s great for business and new product development. As much as it is possible to build upgradeable boxes there is little business incentive to do so. Thank Apple for the versioned proprietary model. But you could build your own PC and run amp sim software. That’s very possible. The fun thing about today is we have choice. By a good amp. That’s for life. Buy a modeler. That’s for convenience today. Choice is a good thing.

yeah, building a new computer every 3-5 years is a pain in the butt. If you have DSP problems run Native on the computer it can handle anything and as many amps as you like@@LonelyRocker

My 40 year old 300 euro Marshall tube amp is still relevant. It does what I need, sounds great and can be fixed (never broke 🤞) by any electrician no matter if the company still supports it. Yeah it's heavy and does only one thing. 😉 If i get too old and can't carry it anymore or if you need more versatility (who needs +100 presets?) maybe a modeler is the way to go. (Sorry I didn't watch the full video yet). I am probably getting too old.

I agree with you...I said so in the video. I love my amps and no modeler will ever replace them. But for a studio setting I'm finding these modelers very useful and compliment my amps. But given a choice, I'm with you...real amps all day!!! An no you're not too old ;)

1. Line 6 is the most amazing music products company I know. I have the HX stomp and it's unbelievable. 2. I will not buy hardware that came out in 2015. Line 6 needs a Helix 2
