After everyone saw Kurtis's video ‪@CuttingEdgeEngineering‬ of repairing the Dipper Arm, I had to do this video. I already had it on the mill when his video came out. A lot of you asked me to film this, so here it is.
This job is a Jib from a log loader. The pin hole wore out and is now an oval. This is not acceptable, so it must be fixed. Watch as I line bore in preparation for the repair.
Some new shop-built fixtures and tooling in this video. The job went very well, and the customer is happy with the repair.
Topper Machine LLC is an entirely manual machine shop located in Spooner, WI. Our videos will highlight some of our shop work as well as the sawmill we built in the shop and our A.D. Baker steam engine, and others we work on.
Thank you for watching!

Your primary objective is to make a living-the YT video’s are a bonus, but making them eats up a LOT of time that you are not being paid for, nor do your viewers have pay a small fee to watch. You are doing an excellent job at both, machining & video presentations. Thank you for sharing your time to do this, I feel it is something some viewers overlook as I read the comments. This applies to all those who work for viewer pleasure. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 😁🇦🇺🦘

Those supports are excellent idea. I am actually lucking for a horizontal boring mill. And many that I saw didn’t have the back support… you just fixed that problem.

Nice bearing supports simple but effective, I did notice all the vibration with the threaded bar on the previous video.

fixturing is a lot of work. it is the need for safety of the machine and the operator. it is hard to determine what the minimum safety level. because.when safety works you do not know how much extra safety you have. you only know you have a safety issue when something goes wrong. and of course then it is to late hopefully some thing minor to fix. many of us got scared when josh removed osha mandated safety guards on the brake press. osha safety addresses accidents that have happened and the painfully stupid things like putting a finger in a crush point with repair not possible. josh has a healthy respect f or pinch points. josh chooses to remove osha required guards he takes responsibility if he slips up and crushes a finger by accident. another different example a roofer is working on a roof that requires safety equipment. this person said he knew it and when his boss told him to go work on the roof because he was good on the roof and the boss would get safety equipment. well this person of polish nationality with a green card over 10 years ago. living as a homeless person looking for a free ride. he had 2 cars while a typical homeless person has no car or at best one car. this bloke had two vws but he failed to understand a single person can only drive one car at a time. he parks in a high crime area and he wonders why some one would break into his piece of in my opinion was a piece of trash but you one person's junk is another persons treasure. back to the roof job. he slipped and fell of the 16 ft high roof and broke his leg. i felt sorry for him because he said he needed the money and had to work in our corrupt non.democrat country. when i asked him did he know he needed safety equipment and he said yes and did he still go on the roof. and he said yes he needed money. when i asked him directly did he choice to go on the roof. than told him any intern training to be a lawyer. would refuse to represent him in a court of law . this dum dum pollock made the choice to go on the roof and fell off. the boss is not responsible for his broken leg that is not healing properly. he is. and he knows where every hand out that can be gotten. and he knows less than the scarecrow in the wizard of oz. he ate some nasty garbage out of his car and within an hour he was pucking his brains out had to be food posioning his food and his choice to eat it. then he had to take a dump and he had to go to walmart to relieve him. i wanted say thank god and one vw jetta for taking him away. eventually like a bad penny he returned. belly aching he had to raise his feet otherwise he could get a blood clot in his broken leg. and doctors said they would have to amputate the leg. offered him a lawn chair to use and he was happy. when it became dark and cold. and he went to walmart to take a dump and in the morning i found him asleep with his jetta idling burning hi test premium gasoline. i found him in his car crunched up behind the wheel. if he becomes an amputee it is his choice again. lunch calling.

Much better boring bar support now! Once this is fixed the operator is going to miss his “omnidirectional” joint. Regard how you do your videos, you do it your way. People can take it or leave it. It takes a lot of time to make a real top shelf video and I can understand if a person doesn’t want to do that.

I want to do better videos, but time is not there. Maybe if I cut back to one a month, I could do it, but that's not going to keep people around to watch. The next video is with the new camera, and it is significantly better. It's been crazy in the shop this year and hard to turn a 30 minute job into an 8-12 hour production. This video in particular was a 2 hour job, but it took 8 because of setting up shots, reshoots, changing angles, etc. Nothing easy about doing KZfaq videos. I started it as a marketing tool to show what I can do, and it's grown beyond that.

nice video. you repair it so that if your final solution needs repair. you grind flanges off and put new flanges and/or bushings alternate approach is to weld up material so that is bored out to fit. and it wears out again. and needs to be rebored next repair. if you get the job to repair you use your way again because your way is better than the alternate way. your way allows the next repair to be done with less steps and processes so subsequent repairs will be more cost effective as long as costs of labor and machining. so fix it right the first time it will less work the next time. i guess it is a play on words. pay me now or play me later as rework. that's where you say make it right the first time. further wear goes to repair and not rework. did i understand or do i need addition information? thank you for educating more than i knew yesterday. keep up the good work my friend.

These supports were quick and easy with on hand material. I have an idea for a much heavier one and plan to build it soon.

Nice job, well done.....Please dont take this the wrong way......your videos are excellent.......not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me or am seeing a bit of rotational whip in the bar....as your bar is soooo long, why not make a 3rd bearing block/steady rest on a stand to put 3/4 way out on the furthest end.....you can measure the rotational whip at cutting speed and I think you'll notice the bar flexing from its static plus/minus on the short end......as on rotation...(ie the .0005 over 18-20 inches is multiplied to the bar flexing to .005 over a 5 ft increase and even more as the bar length increases)......my eyes may not be what they were 40 yrs ago when i started my career.....but i swear im seeing some whip.....just an observation....

It's entirely possible, or it's camera problems. The bores came out absolutely perfect, so I'm not sure myself. But worth looking at in the future. Thanks for watching.

When finished I believe both holes are not the same size, the plugs are turned to fit and the bushing takes care of final sizing. The line boring is just to ensure both holes are on the same plane line - correct?
@TopperMachineLLC
@TopperMachineLLC 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. On this job anyway. If I would have bored to a precise size on both, the cost would have been much more. This customer has been a great one and some of their stuff we try to do cheap and quick to get them going again. This was one of those jobs.

@@TopperMachineLLC Josh sometimes there clues hidden like datum cuts. that's the way we did it when I did my apprenticeship in a OEM woodworking machine building company. The old timers always did there datum reference cuts. did not see any on that one. We also did a lot of factory sleeves held in with a set screw Dutchmen then the Bronze or brass bushing was pressed in using the spindle then final bored or reamed. Our road service repair men absolutely insisted it be done that way due to shoddy preventive maintenance of the majority of our customers and because of that they got the engineers to change the prints. Back then every thing possible was done to make field repairs as quick and easy as possible.I don't even thnk the customer even knew about the Dutchmaned sleeves because they were painted over pretty good, it made the road guy look like a hero when he got them up and running quickly ( i learned quite a few tricks from the old road guys when they were stuck back at the shop)I think the engineers to day try to make everything harder to repair. Also back then if the engineer sucked or made a mistake he was gone in a hart beat. Now days it seems that a person gets his degree finds a place desperate enough like they all are now and has a job for life even if he or she sucks BTW When i heard you say Dutchman i could not believe my ears i have not heard that term in 30 years would be interesting to know how many of your subscribers or the thousands who watch you even know what that is. I love your content it makes me smile and think about stuff I have not thought about in a long time so looking forward to meeting you someday. Also liked your reference to your counter part Down Under i watch him too but I will always root for Wisconsin guy.
