Pros & cons on line breeding or colony breeding guppy strains. Examples of both and tips on continuing the lines. Updates on Black Lace Snakeskins & Platinum Red Mosaic Big Ear Guppies and a few others.
LINE BREEDING is done for show guppies because it's the best way to keep the strain strong and advance the depth of color or get larger and longer fins. To line breed successfully you will want to start with 2 trios minimum of the strain and raise each trio in a separate tank.
COLONY BREEDING can be good for smaller bodied guppies such as medusas, nebula steel, cobra skins. To keep the line from falling apart you will need to cull any males right away that are developing with bad color or body traits and any females with poor body shape.
Backcrossing
This is where you breed, say, the male of a strain that you want to rectify a problem back to one of his daughters from the outcross, or the female of the strain back to her son from the outcross.
You are trying to restore the strain to its original appearance, but with the problem fixed.
You may have to do this a few times. The way to check is if the sibling-to-sibling mating produces fish that look like the parents with the trait fixed.

Everyone looks really good and healthy. I’m working on getting a few more dedicated tanks here too. It’s really cool to see how you’re doing it. Not too much different here. There’s an IFGA event in April near me. Can’t wait to pickup some cool lines. I have those dumbo ears too but not the long fin. We should swap fish later this year.

Hi Jeffrey, thanks very much!! I'll probably be sending entries to that show but it's too far for me to attend. If you buy any fish at the auction try not to buy old males. They look great but chances aren't good that they can catch up to the females.

Great video. Very informative. Why do u say that u can only colony breed with the smaller body guppies?
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for the kind comments & thanks for watching! Colony breeding is basically inbreeding and after a few generations the body will get smaller, colors may degrade or the fins could get smaller. With smaller body guppies this problems are not as noticeable. If you have more than 1 tank of the same strain you can prolong any changes by every few generations crossing some form 1 tank in to the other.

@DGrey
@DGrey 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! Enjoy that beautiful weather! Yes you can definitely make 2 lines from 1 trio. Just take half of the fry and their future generations in a separate tank or group of tanks. Then in 2 or more generations when you cross some fish from line 1 to line 2 they will be related but slightly different so the cross has no surprises and just improves the size and vigor of the line.

So I have four moth old split group by sex of red mosaics, still waiting for the males to finish showing them selves. option's are just pick one :/ or breed to a good looking old male. / or wait a little longer. feeling if I wait much longer might not work out so well. guess you need more than one group due to how slow the males are. so saved another batch from my best female maybe the males will still be swinging when the females are ready. sorry kind of a ramble but I think you well get it lol
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
I'm right with you on that. I have been picking males as the tails fill out with color and just as I see a hint of red color in the dorsal which seems to take in to the 4th month. I wanted to wait and pick the males with the larger pec fins but that is taking even longer to show up. Using an older male at 1st is not a bad idea at all.

How many tanks generally is the minimum possible to be able to breed guppies? Because I only have one tank atm, with just a 10 guppies I got from petshop, all different colors. Sure they will be breeding on their own, but after watching this, Id really like to try something more serious. But I really have no idea, what it would take to even get started. 3 tanks? 5? Even more?
@DGrey
@DGrey 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! Well the good news is you only need 1 tank for the breeders to start out! Once you get a drop of fry they would go in to their own tank. At 2 to 3 months you would start separating the male fry into their own tank so you'd have 3 tanks then, a couple more as you got more fry from the original breeders. After that it's up to how long you want to keep the original breeders and move on to the nicest trios from the 1st batch. So you're probably looking at 5 tanks or so as long as you cull out the slower growers or ones that are not up to speed looks wise.

Man, thanks for sharing this information. I'm currently setting up a line breeding project.. but all I have available are the mixed "mutt" guppies in my area.. Perth Australia are very strict on importing of live fish, so if I want to import any pure strain guppies, I have to get at least 20/30 to make it viable.. they kill 9 of them to test for any unwanted diseases/parasites.. and if anything seems off, bam, whole lot gets euthanized. So in my case, if I picked out a few that looked the same, I should go with colony breeding until I set the traits I want, and then line breed?
@DGrey
@DGrey 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! That is awful that the fish get tested then bumped off. If you can only buy pet store type guppies the best thing would to colony breed them until you get males that you like. Try matching up similar looking females and then like you said line breed them to keep things going in the right direction. Stay safe over there! From the sounds of what I read, just about animal/insect etc in Australia can kill a person!
@daspinmonkey
@daspinmonkey 4 жыл бұрын
@@DGrey Thanks man. Yeah I understand why they're so strict though, we need to protect our local wildlife first, there are many diseases that could wipe out species endemic to us. Ok, thanks. That's what I had planned after seeing your video and doing a bunch of reading. Wish me luck haha. Nah man, sure there are creatures that could kill you, if you were a weak old person or child.. but we have antidotes etc and there have been very few deaths for a long time related to our fauna, actually 0 deaths from spider bites since the 70s. As long as you leave them alone and don't be dumb, you'll be fine.

I agree and I think Hawaii and Canada have strict rules on imports too but not as strict as testing and killing off some of the fish. That could get expensive for the person bringing the fish in.

I have 1pair of albino full red guppy and 25 fry of them, when can I move the fry to my main tank? And I have black Moscow but the the fre have a color blue in the head and green fins why is this happening.. the parents is black Moscow .. :( what can I do.. Thanks Sir :)
@DGrey
@DGrey 4 жыл бұрын
The albino's can go in once they grow a little more and can avoid being a meal for the other fish. They don't see too well so they are easy targets. Sad to hear about your Moscow line but that does happen. The best way is to just pick the males with the darkest color each time until you get it back to the color you wanted. It can take a couple of generations of doing that.

Hi I wasn’t interested in breeding my guppy’s I just wanted mails but a week after buying then found about 16 baby in my tank They are about four months old now and they look nothing like yours I have to say that my guppy’s are the ugliest I have ever seen they are orange with a lot of black in them they really are strange looking ......i really love your yellow guppy’s all really beautiful ....Kimberley

Thank you very much Kimberly!! I'm sure they are not ugly. Guppies are always cool looking. The strains I have are specialized and not what you'd see in pet stores so they are very different looking to some people.

What if the male has a nice color but is a bit deform?
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! If the deformity is just fin damage I'd use the male with the better color. If the deformity was bent spine or sliding, not swimming right, I would not use that male.

Thanks for watching! I keep water sprite at the tops of the tanks or java moss. I also mentioned using 1 gallon spawning jars for the female in the step by step guide to successfully raise fancy guppies, last week. That video will help you with some more tips as well. Best of luck raising your fish!

D Grey I don’t know wether it’s just me but usually when I use plants there is a lot of dirt or some gunk that come from the plants and settle on the bottom of the tank. I know that it won’t really affect the fish but I like my fish tanks clean without that gunk. Any other way to do it? Thanks for answering my questions by the way. I just found ur channel and I am really enjoying all of your videos
@DGrey

Thank you for watching and the very kind words! Plants act as a natural filter, dirt gets trapped in the leaves, roots or the java moss filaments. Every couple of weeks (Before doing a water change) I take the plants out & move/shake them out in the bucket of warm water. After the dirt in the tank settles from pulling the plants out I do the water change and put the plants back in. I keep plants at the top so there's no replanting needed.

I don't see where you are actually line breeding anything. Colony breeding in two separate tanks still isn't line breeding. Cool video though.
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It's still line breeding to me if I use a younger male in with the original parents. I just don't think that the older males can be counted on to keep impregnating the females. To me colony breeding is multiple generations in the same breeding tank. I do colony breed the galaxy/nebula steel, pingu's & japan blue doubleswords.
@TerryL263
@TerryL263 5 жыл бұрын
@@DGrey The term line can mean different things. You can have two seperate lines which is what you are doing which is all good. when you put line with breeding means an entirely different thing. To line breed a single line takes like 6 tanks.
@DGrey
@DGrey 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the fish I mentioned I run 2 separate tanks of breeding trios as they have babies I put them in a tank to grow out. Once they age I cull out some, then separate males from females and put each sex in their own tank. Grow them out and select ones I either sell, enter in shows or use as the next breeders. To me that is line breeding.

Inbreeding is not the problem. But if there is a hereditary defect in the DNA, it is reinforced with each generation of inbreeding. First of all, it is a good idea to have a fixed breeding group. All offspring immediately. Keep the breeding stock for life. Then the inbreeding doesn't go that fast either. If the guppies look good, you can replace a dead animal with a beautiful animal from the offspring. If you prefer to buy a new one, it's more difficult. A new animal can bring disease and cause disaster. Therefore, put the new guppies in a separate container. And after six months you use daughters from the quarantine group to supplement your breeding group. (For example, you replace all breeding females) If you want to avoid overcrowding, look at the young guppies with a magnifying glass after two or three weeks. The females have a dark spot on the back of their abdomen, near the base of their tail. Separate them from brothers and nephews at that age. Because young males can fertilize their sisters and nieces within four or five weeks. The female stores the sperm until she is fertile and then she becomes pregnant. But if you separate them in time, a female tank and a male tank, the females will grow longer. They grow bigger and you don't have an overcrowded tank.
