Line choices for jig fishing walleye. A common debate is braid versus monofilament. Break down of when we prefer braid and when we prefer mono.
As a rule of thumb, we prefer mono when using live bait like a jig and minnow. We also like mono whenever the bite is tough or if we are missing fish or loosing fish on braid.
We often prefer braid when using jigs and plastics, hair jigs or when pitching jigs around weeds. We also like braid when fishing vertical over deep water.
We explain how the stretch of mono influences the action of the jig and also enables fish to suck in the jig without as much resistance.
We encourage anglers to get comfortable with both mono and braid as both have a time and place. At the end of the day, if you are missing fish with braid, switch to mono. If you are not getting as many bites, switch to mono. If you are dumping fish on mono or can’t snap weeds off… switch to braid.
