Linear drain, Mud Base. Step by Step. How to prep. This video shows step by step how to create a base for the installation of a Schluter Kerdi-Line linear drain. This will also work for other types of line drains, it is just a method to create a flat pitch for water to flow towards a long drain. The beauty of a linear drain is that allows for shower floor tile options not possible with a traditional small point drain. All the tile options available with a standard drain are still valid, plus the ability to install any other size tile also becomes possible, no longer is the tile size limited to mosaic tiles no larger than 3", Large format tiles of any size up to the size of the shower floor, now become possible. In this video i demonstrate the method I use to create a slope flat floor pitched to the linear drain using deck mud as the base. Foam trays are also an option, however the sub floor to which the tray is installed has to be, flat, level and smooth to accommodate a foam tray and the tray still needs to be cut fitted or extended and modified to fit exactly into the space of the shower floor. Mud, or deck mud, or floating the shower floor has only one needed condition to be possible, and that is that the sub floor be stable. It has no importance how level flat and smooth the base for the mud is as long as it can support the floor. Obviously it still needs to be cleaned before the installation of the base.
