The lesson of the story is to not dwell on death when it visits your life and instead go on living. The dude focuses on his dead wife and ceased to proactively live and becomes lonely. Thus a dead woman visited him and leads him to his own death. The man's intense focus on death beforehand was comparable to the extreme lust towards the ghost. When tragedy visits your life seek support from others, do not be alone and focus on what you have.

I prefer to think he died the way he wanted to. Life is temporary. Why die miserably alone, when you can die loved. I think he knew exactly what he was walking into by going to her "home". Especially if you consider the alternate version where they are together as ghosts. People die for loved ones all the time, be it revenge, honor, family, etc. This story just changes it to dying to BE with a loved one instead of dying FOR a loved one. PS:wOOOoooooOOOooo Necro comment.

For anyone interested, in the original Chinese version of the story, the story was more of a sad love story between a young lonely scholar and a dead girl from a noble family. The storyline's basically almost the same as the Japanese one except the guy was just a fresh scholar who happened to accidentally fall in love with a ghost. The ending was also slightly different in this case with the guy(sober) choosing to join her in the afterlife. The ghost of Peony (the ghost) was pretty harmless in this version. The story is actually part of an anthology called Strange Tales from Liaozhai by Pu Songling .

@@Linfamy Wow! Can't believe I got a like back from you ! Thanks 😄 Extra: The anthology features a lot of interactions between humans(normally scholars) and supernatural beings(fox spirits, ghosts etc) and the stories all feature some sort of criticism against classism in China back then. The author allegedly got his inspiration from stories he heard from travellers at a resting stop in a place called Liaozhai hence the title of the anthology. He happened to be a struggling scholar too haha.

With Otsuyu saying she lived near a temple, this kinda reminds me of the Resurrection Mary ghost story from the 1930s, except she's not evil and nobody died but her. When the men who danced with her (literally, no euphemism here) drove her home, they drove by the Resurrection Cemetery, she'd ask them to stop and let her get out and then she'd disappear into thin air right in front of the guy. I learned about it from an old episode of Unsolved Mysteries.

This feels like a metaphor for the value of not forgetting to live; To not drown in grief, in the death of a loved one. People in deep grief often stop eating, stop sleeping, forget the world around them and stop caring for themselves. It's beautiful in a way, and serve as a very good warning that courting the memory of the dead, might kill you too. It also seems to guide people to keep an eye on someone who is in grief, and encourage them to try and help the griever and not idly look on as they're consumed by grief and the memory of the dead. Simply beautiful, even, in it's gory description. This is a masterpiece. :)

Theory on why the religious element was lost between China/Japan: The story seems to originate in the Ming Dynasty and make its to Japan in the Edo Period. Edo Period authors produced a lot more sensational/lewd stories than writers of earlier time periods due to the rising economic standards and general stability causing people to want greater entertainment than was available in prior generations and the people demanding it being of a general lower class than in the Heian Period. You could consider it the start of like pop fiction. If you compare legends that actually existed in Japan prior to this like Kurozuka and Tamamo there's a much heavier buddhist redemption narrative in the stories in their Noh and Otogi Zoushi forms. Folk stories at that point existed mostly to impart faith and morality on the lower classes, but in the Edo period these redemptive elements were excised by authors to play up the gore and revenge elements. So if Botan Doro had existed and migrated to Japan in the Muromachi period they likely would have kept those elements, just changing the Taoist ascetic to a Buddhist monk, and rather than banging Ogiwara, Otsuyu would just give a long soliloquy about how much her life sucked and why she couldn't move on to the afterlife.

The adaptations I read, one's a movie and another a TV show adaptation, says something different regarding how Shin'nojo died, both of these events takes place on the final day of the Obon festival: 1. A poor couple was bribed by Otsuyu (and/or her servent) to tear up the Buddhist paper from Shin'nojo's house, thus allowing Otsuyu to take him to the underworld. 2. Otsuyu tricked Shin'nojo (this adaptation calls him Shinzaburo) into believing he woke up the day after the end of the Oboro festival because a woman came just as Otsuyu was about to leave.

@@Linfamy "OOF!" Is a versatile, and heavily context-rooted slang-term, used similarly to the use of "Dang.." "Back to the Drawing Board" "Fail" "Sad" and "LOL" in causal conversation, and in the context of either some sort of humorous Failure/Death (usually in Games/Humorous Remixes). It is also sometimes used as an innuendo. It's origins are from the "Death" Sound-Effects in Roblox and Minecraft, respectively heard here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftVylJWE3tzYoHk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9ZdZ8xn3rutYXU.html

The reminds me of a Thai story call Mae Nak. Nek was a woman married to A man named Tid, but he was drafted into the army. Whan he returned, Nak had bore him a child, but the neighbors avoided them. They knew Nak had died in giving birth, and the were both ghosts. Tid found out and ran, causing Nak to go on a rampage, searching for him. A Buddist priest managed to bind her spirit to one of her skull bones. Supposedly, the Thai eoyal family has it. She has her own temple, and is worshiped as a symbol of love.
