Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the second part of a comic adaptation of the Hobbit!

Originally uploaded December 8th, 2014.
ORIGINAL INFO: Three rings were given to the elves, wisest and fairest… and rudest.
RUMINATIONS: We were going to rescue Jaeris’ homeworld.
The plan was a storyline that wasn’t going to happen for a while, but it WAS the plan - that once I had built up sufficient resources for the show, there would be an entire storyline where Comicron One travelled to Jaeris’ homeworld and the crew aided the world in overthrowing their dictatorial government, with twists and turns along the way to make it interesting and eventually say farewell to Jaeris.
Unfortunately, this is really one of those examples of why I tend to play a lot of the characters myself. Namely: other people have lives outside of acting in silly internet videos that they don’t get paid to do. Will was given a job opportunity in Texas that was too good to pass up, so we needed to wrap up Jaeris’ storyline. I always had this idea on the backburner of a former acolyte of Vyce coming back to get revenge on Linkara and played by my friend Melissa, who also voices Eliza the foam lizard (as well as playing the astronaut Romero in the AT4W Movie). A separate idea is someone whom Jaeris had stolen a magic gun from also coming in for some vengeance, but that was another idea down the line that hadn’t really been developed. As such, I quickly threw together a similar idea wherein it was Jaeris’ wife coming to rescue him finally. It worked out pretty well, I think, even if it is brief.

The interesting thing about the Hobbit retcon is that Tolkien did give a very valid reason for it: The original was how Bilbo wanted it portrayed, trying to lighten his conscience and make himself seem like less of a thief. The later edition was how it actually happened

Another reason altogether why the eagles didn't get involved: The One Ring's power depends on the wielder. If a little HOBBIT has the ring... we just get Gollum. If someone like GANDALF got the ring, all hell would break loose. And since the Eagles are considered to be somewhere equal in power to Gandalf, it would be a really bad idea for an eagle to get near a ring.

The actual explanation for the Eagles: The Eagles were created by the Valar, Manwe, Lord of the Sky (basically, Middle Earth's version of Zeus/Odin), as his own race of sentients.

my favorite explaination for the eagles not taking them every where is from the webcomic Olgaf (really funny but also alot of nsfw stuff search at your risk) In that Bilbo on eagle back is whining about "why did we do all that walking if you could summon eagles to just fly us there?" gandolf gives the they are there own people and can not simply be summoned bit but bilbo like most fan isn't buying it. he then adds this part "plus they are giant birds of prey, and small crunchy things like use shouldn't be around them when they are hungry" while in the back ground a eagle twists about to grab the dwarf off its back and pop it into his mouth.

Also on the eagles, it's established in the Hobbit that the goblins hate and fear the eagles _because they can't reach them._ So the eagles aren't in any danger from any outside forces, and basically live in a world of their own. They don't care what happens to the rest of Middle Earth, because it doesn't affect them. Hence why they won't risk their lives flying Frodo and the ring to Mordor.
@alucardyoici

+Admiral Lulzaru yes but so did the ents until pippin explained that this war was gonna reach them sooner or later. And apparently convincing the eagles was so hard to even fathom they sent 9 people who got separated and almost died if it wasn't from luck. It's not like the plan they chose was better than trying to secure an air force
@SubZerosHat
@SubZerosHat 8 жыл бұрын
True, but in the case of the eagles, their eyrie was so high up that the goblins couldn't even reach them at all, so they were scared of them. If they're *that* high up, the war really doesn't concern them. Besides, the ents went into action because some of their kin closest to Isengard were chopped down in the orcs war effort. So they definetly were in danger.

I remember reading it for the first time and going "Thank god, giant spiders". The story really screeches to a halt until they arrive at the Lonely Mountain. That's why I'm glad the film added Tauriel and expanded Bard. While it's still filler, it does flesh out the story and characters for the final act. I would have preferred a longer spider fight than the barrel fight myself, but it serves its purpose and it's well-choreographed

So how come the eagles DO show up at Mordor in the movies after the fellowship are already there? Also, they were going to have to deal with the Nazgul and their dragons either way as long Frodo had the ring, weren't they? Also, how is having to fight an army of orcs better than having to dodge the arrows of archers? I feel like I'm missing something.

You know what riddle I've always hated? The Riddle of the Sphinx, "What walks on 4 legs in the morning, 2 at noon, and 3 in the evening?" The answer is man, 4 legs as a baby, two as an adult, and 3 as an old man with a cane." I understand the cane being referred to as a "leg", but how the hell are you supposed to know that "morning, noon, and evening" are just metaphors and not the actual times of day? By that logic I could say "What sleeps in the evening? Man, you say? Nope, the answer is a bear, because when I said evening, I really meant Winter. And speaking of bears, I get to eat you now!"

They're supposed to test your brain's ability to understand interpretation. Nothing is meant to be literal, it would ruin the whole point.

FNGLHR See there's the thing, "interpretation". Anyone can have a different interpretation. And all that stuff about the times of day "representing" the passage of time? It's not a test of smarts, its deciphering poetry, and in high school english/literature classes the teacher didn't get to eat the students if he didn't like the meaning that they gleaned from a poem. Also not all riddles are abstract, some are logic puzzles or hinge on words having double meanings.

What I find interesting about Tolkien releasing a new edition of the Hobbit to retcon the old story, to further imply that the Ring was much more precious to Gollum than in the original release...I don't think doing that was even necessary, considering Tolkien ALREADY retconned it. Yeah, in the first section of Fellowship of the Ring, when Gandalf reveals the Ring's identity to Frodo, he explains that, after all this time, the story we were familiar with, with Gollum betting the Ring during their game of riddles, was actually a lie that Bilbo told - in stories and in his memoirs - in order to portray himself as not a thief. Admittedly, it somewhat makes more sense that he'd re-release the novel - especially since that in response to releasing the LOTR Trilogy, the Novel would be relevant again and could cash in on renewed popularity - in the sense that it actually portrays the events as they "really" happened, and BIlbo lying about it later... But it kind of breaks the illusion that Fellowship tries to - repeatedly - establish, when it describes what we read in the Hobbit is actually a third-person account of Bilbo's Memoirs - "There and Back Again."

+TPrower I remember reading in another book that Tolkien took most of these riddles from various folklores and slightly modified them. As for the legs riddle, the first time I read the book, it was a French translation and they did use a word that specifically designated a one-legged table (which made the riddle a lot easier). I know these kind of tables were common in the UK at the time, but I wonder why they didn't have a proper name in English.

Tolkien changes things, and nobody bats an eye. Lucas changes something, and everybody loses their minds ;) I'm glad the films added more to the dwarves thinking Bilbo as a load, and the way he redeems himself. I kinda wish Jackson had made Bilbo's fight with the spiders more elaborate and significant, but I guess he was more interested in spicing up the barrel scene. I applaud the films for making the dwarves more significant and very different from each other. They're each kind of one note, but at least they HAVE note. And, hey, they brought WEAPONS instead of instruments. THANK YOU for the eagle problem. The movie is VERY vague about it but it's NOT a plot hole! I'm so glad Lewis and Noah tore this "plot hole" a new one. My biggest problem with the eagles in the films is that they never speak when they really should have. I think Jackson didn't like them. I found Beorn too flippant in the book and too brief in the film, but I really do like the character. At least, a lot more than Tom Bombadil! My problem with this comic series is that it's mostly walls of text taken from the book. It's less a comic and more a illustrated novel Yeah, thanks to the Hobbit, I think elves in Middle Earth are douchebags :) Oh Thrandy, you're such an asshat. This becomes a problem when I tried to read Silmarillion aka Tolkien loves elves waaaaay too much
@Gojiragon
@Gojiragon 3 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is from five years ago, but I do want to interject a little bit of knowledge about the animal thing: Peter Jackson indeed did not like the fact that the animals talked. He didn’t want that for the eagles and especially for Smaug because they thought it would “look unrealistic and weird“ and were originally going to have a Smaug speak through telepathy magically. What happens from there is conflicting, either they were forced to make him talk traditionally after some internal conflict or the tests with the telepathy proved to be too awkward and bad looking.

So do the eagles not go to Mordor in the books, then? Because I could've sworn that in the Return of the King movie, they show up while the rest of the fellowship are fighting at the Black Gate to allow Frodo and Sam to reach Mount Doom and then the eagles rescue Frodo and Sam from the surrounding lava after they destroyed the ring. Also, the fellowship encounters a bunch of monsters in Moria and Frodo and Sam encounter Shelob on the way to Mordor and there would've been an army in their way if it hadn't been for the fight at the Black Gate. The point about the archers doesn't make sense to me because clearly there's no safe way to get to Mordor, so why not take the faster way? Maybe it's explained better in the books, but based on the movies Linkara's explanation doesn't make sense to me and it still seems like a plot hole. Is it explained better in the books?
@Tareltonlives
@Tareltonlives 2 жыл бұрын
@@adamdavis1648 The eagles go to Mt Doom while the Nazgul are dead and Sauron's army is running away. The entire point of the Fellowship is stealth; Smeagol didn't tell them about Shelob and Moria was the only way through the mountain range. Taking the eagles would have given Sauron time to do something And even besides Linkara's point about Sauron's army, there's the fact that the Ring corrupts people. What's to stop it from corrupting one of the eagles to eat Frodo and take the Ring for itself?

I looked this up this morning while I was watching the first half of this - of the 13 dwarves, 3 die in the Hobbit, 3 more become important between this and Lord of the Rings, 1 is important because his son is Gimli and people remember Bombur because he's fat and clumsy. That still leaves 5 dwarves who don't really do much of note, or have much to distinguish them. That stuff about references to folklore are one thing, but from a literary standpoint I suspect Tolkein just wanted some 'spares' in case he needed some of them to die, and so the youngest readers could giggle at the big families with rhyming names like a counting game.

11:40 Wait... people don't actually care how clever or well-read the writer is?- I must go alert the American Literature Association! I have this problem even with other fans of Tolkien (& that's not to say I'm the biggest myself, though I've read the Silmarillion completely so I've earned the credentials): yes, the Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit are published & presented as novels- as conventional fiction- but they shouldn't be. No, I'm not saying they're something "oh-so-much-more." They're just not that. They're a speculative philological project. They are the hypothetical literature of an imaginary world, that was only ever imagined in the first place because an invented language just needed people to speak it, & people with a language... say things, thus stories, thus literature- & around & around we go. The point is that they're just best not approached as fiction, more as an experiment in language. I'm not saying that's the way it should be, nor that you must look at it that way to enjoy them "properly," it's just what they are.

An explanation about how Gollum lost the ring, as given in the novel. Gollum usually likes to eat the fish in his pond but he occasionally decides he wants to eat goblin meat so he puts on the ring for invisibility, strangles a goblin, and drags the body to his home to eat it. At some point, the ring decided it needed to leave so it allowed itself to fall to the ground while Gollum was dragging one such body. In the films, his obsession is plain but probably because he was not in possession of it for decades. In the events of The Hobbit, It is likely that he didn't even realize it was gone until he had need to leave the pond again, which is why he went searching for it in the first place.

Ironic that Gollum at times refers to the Ring as his birthday present when in fact it's revealed in Lord of the Rings that hobbits actually give presents on their birthdays instead of receiving them (hence why Frodo got Bag End and the Ring although September 22nd was his birthday too but that's beside the point). Then again Sméagol did have the Ring in his possession for roughly 500 years before losing it, so maybe that hobbit custom for birthdays changed.

The film implies it's mostly Thorin that is dismissive of Bilbo, and that changes after they reach Beorn. In the book it's the spider attack that convinces Thorin. Now you could have had film 1 end at the capture by the Elves, BUT it still has the problem of the battle at the end coming after Smaug's death. You could cut the battle entirely, but both this adaptation and the films decided to keep it. This comic's solution was make the escape from the Elves the climax, while the film's was to make Bilbo's confrontation with Smaug the climax. there is no solution keeping the battle that doesn't undermine Smaug as the climax. He's no longer the climax if there's a battle after his death. Smaug's death at Laketown should have ended film 2, BUT I think there was also a need to have a cliffhanger, something that is unfortunately common in serial filmmaking.

@linkara Hey linkara, the suggestion in the the lord of the rings for why gollum lost the the ring has been that it left him because it realized that as long as it was with gollum it would never return to sauron. Plus it also has been said in the lord of the rings that the ring could sense sauron returning to power who at the time rose under the guise of the necroma ncer. Having felt this it has been said in the books that the ring left gollum in an attempt to return to sauron

I prefer the original softer coloring over the collector’s edition. Colts we’re chosen for comics knowing they would look different when printed in the comics, so they were exaggerated on purpose. When you have a version that’s keeps the original drawings’ coloring, you sometimes end up with worse art.

Yeah that Fish, Table, Stools, and Bones Riddle is utterly BS. I know in the book they explained how the "Riddle Game" was a sacred compact and tradition that basically even the most horrible, evil, tyrannical creatures would NEVER cheat at and such. It's something that as you nailed requires thinking of way, way too many exceptions rather than standards.

No, because these aren't your run of the mill eagles. They are connected to Manwë iirc as the silmarilion explains this They serve as his messengers and as his eyes on middle earth. They are Gandalf's allies because Gandalf is a lesser spirit a Maiar and his direct superior is Eonwë the banner bearer of Manwë of the Ainur/Valar. Also one of Manwë's domains is related to the winds, which just makes more sense.

Thank you! I can't help but see that as one of NC's weakest videos; there's a strong lack of understanding of the elements he considers problems. Concerning the Eagles, you don't even need to consult the books (as awesome as they are!) to be told why flying them wouldn't work. It takes none other than the famous quote by Boromir to explain plain and simple why just waltzing into Mordor is a completely absurd idea. You're dealing with an artefact of doom that would mean the end of all things the instant it falls into the Enemy's hands. By flying into a place infested with evil, patrolled by thousands of Orc archers and "wraiths on wings" and governed by an immortal spirit who sees all at all times, who is spiritually connected to that artefact of doom, you might as well hand it to the Enemy there and then. Not to mention that we are shown how the Ring affects different races in different ways, except for Gandalf who instead gives us a hint of what would have happened, based on the intense fear in his eyes as Frodo tries to give the Ring to him. It's enough to suggest that even powerful beings like Gandalf would be badly affected by the Ring's corruption. For all we know, it would be worse for the Eagles. They're obviously beings of a supernatural nature (ignoring them being Maiar for a second) so would we want to risk it being in their vicinity for even a few minutes? How do we know they wouldn't succumb, drop the characters mid-flight and take the Ring to Sauron? Note: I commented this on NC's video, but I will point it out here as an additional argument: the Ring would probably be able to fit on their toes as it has been shown to change its size to fit the wearer. Notice how it shrinks when Isildur holds it between his fingers in Fellowship of the Ring. We can safely say that it would do the same with the Eagles. It makes perfect sense in the context of the films as Sauron, in the prologue, forged the Ring "to control all others" pouring "his will to dominate all life" into it. The phrase "One Ring to Rule Them All" can be interpreted as meaning to rule over every living thing, as well as to rule over the other rings. I'm honestly surprised the Critic never considered these things. It may have been explained so much better in the books, but the pieces were there in the films for the audience to put together, some of them clear as day (Boromir's Mordor speech is one of the most famous memes, for Iluvatar's sake!). I realise I have been rambling for quite a bit there, sorry XD I am glad Linkara put his bit on it in this video, though. Quite satisfying!

Man, Bilbo doesn't play fair with his riddles does he? I mean, the one Linkara mentioned was one thing, but straight up asking what's in his pocketses? That's not a riddle, that's just guesswork because there's no train of logic that'd arrive to the answer. Sure his life was on the line here, but that was just mean.

I'm very confused by the differences between the terminology for comic book volumes. "Collected editions", "prestige formats", "trade paperbacks", etc. For me, there are only two terms: "issue" or "volume".
@jfdrac
@jfdrac 5 жыл бұрын
A bit late but a simple answer would be this....Trade Paperback is a collection of a number issues in paperback form often to be released in the after market beyond a comic store.....Prestige format is basically a fancy comic often done on paper akin to a TPB but still a singular issue. They often are larger in size and may have fancier art. Collected edition is a generic term that includes both TPB and hardcover editions as can even include a single comic book or larger size (such as a 96 page special) that has more than one book's stories contained within

Yeah, I feel that Jackson didn't want Gwaihir to talk since it would break the realism and be too hard a stretch on audiences, but it just created a plot hole. I've heard of this in TVTropes as "The Voodoo Shark"-closing one plot hole to create another one.

See, a lot of people say Thranduil is "too mean" in the films, but as you see , he's still a raging asshole in the book. At least he offers them a deal in the film (GOOD one Thorin) and has a more personal motivation for wanting the mountain's treasure rather than just general greed. He's still a douche, but more of a believable one and crappy dad going through PTSD and reacting to trauma (Missed Opportunity in the film: his dad and half his people were killed fighting Sauron as part of the last Alliance, but having his wife killed by orcs still works) by being an asshole than just another Greedy Dick.
@Tareltonlives

One thing I noticed during this rewatch is that the film does a better job at climaxes for each third: instead of a cliffhanger with Gollum, we have the big fight with the Wargs. Instead of escaping the elves as the climax (this does make geographical sense in terms of pacing), we have the confrontation with Smaug. In this part two, it's basically "Are we out of Mirkwood yet?" while the second film actually sets up Smaug's death and the final battle.

So do the eagles not go to Mordor in the books, then? I could've sworn that in the Return of the King movie, they show up at Mordor while the rest of the fellowship are fighting at the Black Gate to give Frodo and Sam a chance to reach Mount Doom. And then the eagles rescue Frodo and Sam from the surrounding lava after they destroy the ring.
