Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the final two issues of The Thing from another World: Eternal Vows!

ORIGINAL INFO: If this was an imitation, a PERFECT imitation, how would you tell if it was a real Thing comic?
RUMINATIONS: I actually ended up filming the storyline portions here on the same day as my brother’s birthday party. We had it in my apartment complex’s party room (the same one used in the movie) and while I hung around for a while, I eventually had to slip off and film all of this in about an hour or two. The good news is that none of this was TOO complicated. Really the most difficult part was the cybermat composition scene, since it required me to have to constantly move them around the floor to be in good spots where they weren’t overlapping each other and give the illusion that I had so many. In reality I only have about 7 or 8 of varying designs, but the composite shot helped give a very decent illusion about how many there really were. The auton hand that Harvey sports was something I had bought a year or so previously with no knowledge of what I was actually going to do with it, but I thought it might make for a good prop eventually… and it did, for the revelation that Harvey, too, had been replaced by a robot.
The robot revelation was the big reveal of all of this, of course. People had been speculating for quite a while about how clearly Harvey was also under the sway of the King, but thought it might NOT be the case since he had shown no signs of acknowledging the King of Worms like Linksano had.
Much like the “Ghost in the Machine” arc, this episode’s special effects have been enhanced! The Game Show reviewer volunteered to update the special effects for the youtube version, producing new photon torpedo, portal, and force field visuals for this. The force field visuals in particular needed the upgrade, since I had just quickly whipped up a forcefield shot for the cybermat in the original version that looked reeeally fakey. These effects have actual energy ripples when something touches it.
The original portal visuals were made by taking the “Fire and ice” Halloween lights that I had used in Longbox of the Damned and projecting them at a black sheet. After playing with the contrast and opacity and a few other little stretches, it created a decent portal effect (combined with some shimmering lights for good measure). While I like the more homegrown effort for my effects (practical and whatnot), there’s no denying that these updated effects look a hell of a lot better and I’m more than happy for them. The good thing about being at this point, where we’re MUCH closer to current times is that I still have all the original storyline files, meaning it’s easy for me to whip up higher quality renders for him to work with. It’s probably not too noticeable for all of you, but it makes me feel better regardless.

He won an Eisner for his coloring on Aliens comics in the 90's, and picked up a few more nominations for his work in recently years on Fraction's Hawkeye, Snyder's The Wake, several different Catwoman series, and even Bendis' Alias and Daredevil runs. I say he has fully redeemed himself for any subpar work here.

If the rumours about this being an unrelated story that was hastily turned into a Thing story are true, I'd guess what they did is just rewrite the second and third issues, as the first issue hardly seems to have anything to do with the prior Thing stories at all, while in the fourth you could quite easily swap MacReady for Detective Rowan and it would have no real effect on the story - in fact, those pointless flashbacks make me wonder if there was originally supposed to be some character stuff with Rowan that the writer either didn't have the time or didn't care enough about to replace.

This comic makes no sense. My head cannon is that climate of fear is the continuity from the good ending of the first mini series while this crap is the alternate reality of the bad ending. Like how Silent hill 3 is cannon with the first game's good ending while Shattered Memories might be cannon with the first game's very bad ending.

I do sympathize. In fact I have a much more prominent divergence from previous film. Doubt you have heard of it. It was a quaint little movie about a group of scientist and air Force personnel in the artic who inadvertently thaw out a vegetable man from outer space who had inadvertently been frozen following it's crash into Earth (possibly worst place for a vegetable man to crash). Amazing film for it's time posing theme's other films have brought up. Mainly science must sometimes ask the question "should we" instead of "can we". Being such a landmark film it inspired and continues to inspire film makers. On of which remade or rebooted or resomething the original. This film also was a landmark film and inspiration. Good movie whose biggest sin was it's title.

Loathe as I am to admit it, I did think of a possible way the Powell and Jenny Things could have worked, as well as the food angle. Let's assume that the Thing's mind and psyche also adapts to better mimic the current host. Usually it would turn into beings with human or near-human intelligence (counting the people who did really stupid stuff among the latter), so turning into a fish whose usual brain patterns revolve around "eat" and "don't get eaten" might have overwhelmed it. If we also assume that the Thing fish swam from the Arctic Circle to New Zealand (for whatever reason) it further adds to the possibility of being lost in fish-brain. Following that the fish-Thing would again get overwhelmed when it switched to a human host riddled with complex emotions (hence the bizarre and contradictory actions), which it attempted to purge over time. This would explain why each Thing was increasingly violent while Jenny and Powell retained the more absurd elements of its ordeal. I'll admit that it's been a long time since I saw The Thing or Linkara's Thing reviews, so I apologize if this is just me talking out of my ass about a franchise I know little about.

@johnalogue9832

...That's actually a good point. Still, the argument remains that it's more likely to be retaining their personality and knowledge via memory and not actually "being" them. What I mean is, they probably don't have free will or independent thought...existence is a hard thing to define, but I'd definitely try to classify them as "dead but it read their brain as it consumed it".

This definitely smacks of being rewritten as a tie-in. It doesn't mean the art was completed and they inserted new content, all it had to be was a script that Dark Horse picked up and rewrote to cram MacReady into it. NONE of this seems related to the John Carpenter "Thing," and doesn't even seem to be connected to the tie-ins...except where dialog is awkwardly inserted. Also if the editor was Mike Richardson, then yes, Linky: all you suspect about how slapdash and slipshod this is almost certainly is accurate.

The one thing that I will always remember from this series is the scene of Jenny jumping out the window, if only for how hideous her face looks. It's not that type of unattractiveness brought on by an expression like anger or fear, where a character if they're truly in an emotional state, will not look their greatest. And that's fine! With Jenny however She's just drawn so... wonky that she looks kind of primitive, especially around the mouth area. And her eyes should be a lot wider, she looks confused from the eyes up. It's almost like she herself doesn't know what to think. The artstyle itself is really wonky, especially with how women are drawn. It's like this guy hasn't done enough art studies on women or expressions.

I felt a bit irked that the flames didn’t stick with the flamethrower. It’s a common misconception that flamethrowers just belch forth flame and whatever their fuel is it gets just immediately burned away when the fire comes out. In actuality most flamethrowers shoot liquids that have been set on fire, like napalm or kerosene, precisely so that it sticks to targets, and those liquids don’t just immediately evaporate the second they catch.

What a ride. Eternal Vows is so insane, you'd think the writer only had vague clip notes from the other comics just to tell what the hell was going on. Everything Linkara said in these reviews was spot on. The writing and art overly contradict what happened in the Thing's own continuity to a point of becoming overly complicated and totally ridiculous. While I like the idea of the Thing attacking a small village, the idea is completely ruined here. As bad as pervious mini-series were, they're Carpenter's film when compared to this.

Strangely, there could be something interesting in this kind of shared-conciousness or whatever it is the Thing has. Like if instead of all the crap in the comic, what if mass-infections actually made things harder for it? I mean there's the lady, the guy, the fish that formed off of what was most likely Erskine from the first comic (actually, why not the seal from climate of fear? That probably was part of the Erskine-thing too) and everyone that came before it. What if those got distracting? Like, say, an imitation of one person accidentally recalling something that an entirely "different" person experienced, blowing both their covers? That if everything was shared and all that crap, it'd have trouble juggling stories after a point. I mean it's better off without a voice anyway (it's like Michael Myers, you really shouldn't be able to understand and relate) but there's an explanation that'd make a lot more sense than... it just wanted to settle down. I mean whatever it is, it's never had a problem throwing one of its own (or another part of itself) to the wolves before so I doubt it's an especially caring alien monster.

So why did the thing put clothes on Jenny's dead body. Or did it shape shift the smoking man into Jenny? In that case why was he wearing a bra?

So, My thoughts are that tentacles are easy to draw & animate. They usually have no bones & can be quite flexible, so you pretty much have to try to make them look bad, where as with arms, claws, ect you have to animate/draw around a n invisible skeleton. Think about it, how many times have we seen really poorly drawn limbs, vs poorly drawn tentacles. I dunno, just my thoughts on why everything thing related spams tentacle hentai when, from what I remember, John Carpenter's The Thing had very few tentacles. You pretty much have to try to make tentacles look bad, where as shoulders are a bitch.
