Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the final Thing from Another World comics!

ORIGINAL INFO: It’s less that the research is questionable and more that the intellects of those DOING the research is questionable.
RUMINATIONS: This one only had one additional edit by the Game Show Reviewer, adding the portal effects next to Linksano’s body (which I originally deemed as unnecessary since you couldn’t see the portal that clearly in the shot). However, this gave me an opportunity to correct a BIG mistake - namely that the King of Worm’s reflective little mask meant that it was constantly showing me in the reflection reading off lines to Will Wolfgram, who of course once again stepped into the suit role as he had done before for Lord Vyce. I took some time to blur out the reflection in as many shots as I could. In some it’s not very clear and in others, due to the nature of getting this done with quickly, there wasn’t A LOT I could do to fix it, but I think it’s definitely a marked improvement and it’s less noticeable that I’m standing there reading the lines.
The King of Worms’ look was inspired by a number of things, although the big thing motivating him was time. Even up to filming I wasn’t entirely certain what the hell he was going to look like. I knew I was going to use the platinum masks in some variety, but what his actual face was going to look like took some doing. I conceived of maybe a big, single eyeball in the dead center of it, or just a hole that would SERVE as an eye but not look like it. I wanted this guy to look creepy in some variety, but I just wasn’t sure how to make it happen… until I decided to go back to the well with the Entity. The Entity had been inspired by MissingNo., so if this thing was related to it, maybe go for another Pokémon-themed thing? In this case, his face is designed to resemble the sprite of ghosts from Lavender Town if you don’t have a Silph Scope - the creepy-ass grin and eyes. Thematically, it doesn’t match, of course, since the Entity was a being of pure data and the King of Worms is themed around robots, but it’s scary, which is what’s important.
The other inspiration actually came from Alien, which I had been watching while I edited some of the other reviews. H.R. Giger is famous for inventing the look of the xenomorph, but of course that look itself was taken from some of Giger’s other works. I figured if they could draw inspiration from his works, maybe I could do the same? And the thing I took away from checking out some of his other paintings… was that the dude loved himself some ribbed tubes. As it happened, I had some leftover ribbed tubes that I had purchased in the hopes of someday making a proton pack prop, but that never went anywhere, so I decided to incorporate the tubes into the designs.
Originally, I constructed a quick little chestpiece for him to wear with some blinking lights on it (finishing it just before Will arrives) inspired by the Cybermen’s chestpiece, figuring that since cybermats had played such a big role in the storyline, maybe he could resemble one in some ways, but it just looked awful. Instead, that chestpiece ended up being a piece of equipment on a desk that you can see in the next episode. What he wore instead was a bunch of football armor padding that I had purchased as part of a Borg costume, as I discussed in the Star Trek: First Contact review. It also had some ribbed tubing as part of it, so it helped with the aesthetic. I then added on the netting to give the idea that despite being the youngest of the Techno Gods, he was still old and decrepit and had been here a long time (netting equals old, I guess). The gauntlets were the only “kingly” thing about him, having bought them at a party city much in the same way I had bought Vyce’s original gauntlets at a Target. They looked good and that was what was important: making him look cool.
He’s voiced by Suede, who had eagerly told me he wanted to be a part of a storyline at some point, so I asked him to use his voice he had used for an Obstacle in Suburban Knights. After adding a bit of an echo and a Flanger effect to it, it gives it a very cool effect. You can also hear some odd creaking noises. That’s actually the sound of leather moving from my own leather jacket, which I thought could make for an organic sound of the King’s body moving in odd manners. It didn’t really work all that well, so I stopped using it after this episode, but the other failing in his appearance is that he’s supposed to be wormlike - no legs, just a single body, but it didn’t really convey that very well.

There actually already is another story in the most unexpected of places.Halo is actually set in a universe where the events of The Thing happened. The writers for Halo were so inspired by it that they actually later on wrote little hints into not only a couple of the games, but into the novels and graphic novels as well. One of which straight up names the outpost in Antarctica.In Halo, The Thing was one of the flood.

The "morals aren't supposed to be in a lab" dribble from Douglas is even more offensive to science since there's a lot of moral implications and in some fields, debate, as to what's ethical or not in scientific research or pursuing certain projects, be it the debate over artificial intelligence or incidents that definitely cross the line such as Little Albert. Science and morality are pretty paired up as is and it's ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

+Caz I will say that there is...shall we say a finer line for "scientific" immorality than "normal" immorality. For example, if *I* were to put makeup on a rat to see if it swelled up, I'd probably be arrested for animal cruelty, but with scientists, that's normal because it's MUCH more moral than experimenting on a HUMAN first.

+Caz well, at one point in history, it was immoral to operate on a human body. many of it's forerunners had to operate illegally in secret. what is seen immoral for one time period may not be deemed immoral for the next. so, he is right about morals having no place in science. however, there is a difference between morals and ethics.

Here's my headcannon. Well, it's like Linkara says...if you want to have someone to have investment in something, you need a story behind it. The K.O.W. lives with perfect and efficient servants. They are probably boring as crap so he likes to be entertained by another powerful guy who has people who 1- makes robots who obey but snark and 2- have people are inexplicably in his image. Maybe the King unconsciously sees some of himself in Linkara. He even injects his servants, his will into the show and poses on the bookshelf during reviews.

"There is no room in research for morals." You know that's a line written by someone whose understanding of science comes mostly from fiction. Morals serve as a guideline to help keep you and your line of work in line with the purpose of helping people. And even if you yourself are somehow a completely amoral prick, morals ensure you still get funding for your research and not get sent to jail.

True but many researchers (especially in the past) have been able to live by this code and get away with it. Though they do it in secret and are reviled as the monsters they are when the light is shed on their works. Joseph Mengele being the most infamous among these moral-less researchers (yes he was an officer and physician but he also did experiments).

@@Ninetailedknight This narrative, including things like Mengele, the Tuskegee syphilis experiments, the Milgram obedience experiment, the Stanford prison experiment, and a whole lot others, is a bit outdated. The basic concepts of the Nuremberg Code from the 1940s were finally implemented in the USA in 1974 by the National Research Act. Ever since then, there are Institutional Review Boards in any place of major scholarly research who will review your proposed research for ethical considerations. While primarily oriented toward protecting human subjects, IRB review covers pretty much any research, with only a few exemptions (which are determined by a representative of an IRB). If you didn't get your research IRB reviewed, you'll have a great deal of difficulty having it recognized, so it's in a researcher's interest to go through the process even though it can be a bit bulky. Sure, the odd unethical experiment slips through (the most recent I can think of is He Jiankui's genetic alteration of babies, though it should be noted that the Chinese government is at least going through the motions of an investigation on that one), and sure, there's no accounting what goes on in the most severe, human-rights-averse countries who couldn't care less what the Nuremberg Code reads. The vast, vast, VAST majority of scholarly research, though, is performed in a regulated environment by individuals who had to take courses on ethics to even submit their potential research for review.

I'll be honest, when I kept hearing about the King of Worms, my mind kept going to the Wicked Worm Beast Yu-Gi-Oh card for some reason, though the robotic idea with the ghost mask was good. The only problem I have is that I think platinum was the wrong way to go. The shining silver just doesn't work for the look, in my opinion. Perhaps if it was a little darker in color or something. Also, the netting is neat, though cybernetic lines would have fit the look better and you could have made the body rusty looking (and maybe had him hunching a little) in order to get the aged appearance you were looking for.

Personally, I'm one to advocate that any research of an organism as... morphic (for lack of a better phrase) as the Thing or those necro things from Deep Space should occur on a space station far from the Earth (like 2x the distance of Pluto from the sun straight out plus a similar distance perpendicular from the solar system disc) surrounded by a scaffold with no physical connection to the research station itself; the scaffold is the important part of the security, as it contains a few dozen or so high-yield nuclear devices set up to implode the station (NOT explode, as that carries the risk of letting it "surf" to safety) if anything went wrong so hard that, ideally, it might even temporarily collapse into an unstable black hole which would promptly explode again. If something survived that kind of contingency, it deserves to take over our planet IMO. EDIT: and as far as the q of if people can be infected and not know... not impossible IMO if you assume that should the creature realize it is discovered it can suddenly and violently take over the host instead of slowly infecting it through the blood-brain barrier.

I think it's because the real monster in the Thing is not the "monster" itself but the emotion of paranoia and fear. What the two emotions together do in combination with sleep deprivation and how it undermines efforts to survive. How the clock ticks against everyone: the longer the infection remains even if it's just one person, the more sleep deprived and more fearful and paranoid everyone becomes and how they turn against one another. But the "monster", the thing itself, takes the spotlight from that. So you end up with writers missing that point.
@alexiaNBC
@alexiaNBC 5 жыл бұрын
@@laughingalex7563 Or maybe there was no Thing. The monster was a result of cabin fever that affected the Norwegians and American outposts as a result of the harsh storm and living in the coldest most secluded region in the world. Maybe the dog wasn't infected with anything other than a deadly disease that the other dogs reacted to and the men saw the diseased dog as a monster. Thus, the Thing is isn't an alien but the psychological result of a mass mental breakdown among the entire group

It's set about a month after Halo 1, where a ringworld filled with parasitic monsters blew up, a military ship comes across a prison ship located within the wreckage and a squad of marines are sent aboard... And that's all I'll say, it's a really good story with a great ending.

So Linkara, what's your reason for thinking the blood first theory isn't likely? I know that sounds Passover aggressive but it's more a direct question. Me personally, although I've not actually seen any ofnthe films, I assumed it just assimilated memories and used those to trick people until it had to reveal itself.

Always wondered what an entire planet of Thing aliens would be like. What happens when every possible organism has been absorbed? All plant and animal life, plus whatever else is out there on whatever other worlds its been to. What do they eat then? Energy still needs to be converted for a cell to do its thing, and we never hear about the Thing eating. Photosynthesis? Some form of absorbing heat energy? We eat and burn our food quickly which let's us move a lot faster than plants can manage. Not a biologist, and I only remember bits of my college classes in it. Anyone have any ideas?

Come to think of it, Douglas is kind of like that mad scientist in the Doctor Who episode "Underwater Menace" "Why do you want to blow up the world?" "Why? You a scientist ask me why? The achievement dear Doctor! The destruction of the world-the scientist's dream of supreme power!"

Making a sequel to The Thing where Macready and/or Childs' survives is like making a Cloverfield 2 where Rob and/or Beth survive, it's very clear that they're goners.

Both of MacReady and Childs accepted that they werent very likely to make it (what mattered was make sure the Thing didnt win and spread.) Soo if they are going to freeze to death, might as well take the fucker down with them. Its POSSIBLE for them to survive but very unlikely...(hence why the ending is perfect).

You know what the Thing also reminds me of? Jurassic Park and Jaws. Like the Thing, they were brilliant thrillers who were so popular franchises came out of them despite their stories being pretty much over in the first arc. I'm just glad there aren't 3 or 4 awful Thing sequels like there were for Jaws and Jurassic Park.

Isn't the day/night cycle in Antarctica bass-ackwards though? It's quite possible the comic got the time wrong but the writer got many other details correct so it's not too much of a stretch that they may have taken that into account.

Questionable Research is easily the best out of Dark Horse's Thing mini-series. While I thought the first two stories featuring McCready were just okay, I do agree that if you are going to do a sequel (which the Carpenter film does NOT need) you should change both the setting and the cast. However, this story doesn't go far enough with those ideas. A pity Eternal Vows was so insufferable. The idea of having the Thing in an island village could have been an interesting opportunity to play around with, what a waste.

@AT4W

+David Spring They understand that lesser beings experience it. They don't realize their own capabilities with it... and the thing to remember is that the Entity and the King of Worms are also on the lower end of the Outer Gods spectrum.

Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall I totally agree, but NONE of your storylines (except maybe the Insano saga because you were just doing that because...well, because, and even then, it's fun and brought us the Warrior reviews) are BAD, they all have merit in their own right and are all fun to watch.

+Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall It's kinda cool that the Entity storyline was about a glitch that you (as a creator) noticed glitching up your videos, and then it glitched the whole world into almost crashing. I disagree that the storyline was the best (I'm split between Ghost in the Machine and the King of Worms) but I say the Entity made up the best scenes of the show.

I wondered the same thing but I think the thing getting cancer wouldn't be good for us it would grow continuously. sure it wouldn't be able to blend in but then it wouldn't need to it'd just spread and grow, I mean there is the possibility it's cells could mutate in such a drastic way that it can't alter cells anymore but that seems to lucky for us

+alucardyoici A desolate environment with very little risk of infection spread (since presumably they would need samples of any viruses to test with) due to the low population and ability to freeze them quickly if contamination breaks out? It's actually one of the better places to do it. After all, we know they're a research outpost and I don't think they ever stipulate what sort of research they're doing, but they DO have at least two medical personnel on hand.
