Connecting and reaching out to people on LinkedIn can be quite difficult with a low response rate or success rate - and that's ok!
The goal is to build a network of people who care enough to help in a big OR small way; and maybe, you are able to help them, too!
Check out this video to learn more.

Depends on your job. For example, I work in the financial services as a project manager and it's hard to create content on projects because it is frowned upon. Everything is highly regulated and I work with teams updating back-end systems so information on the projects are not the kind of thing a bank wants you advertising.

Awesome advice. I am always wary of networking connections on LinkedIn etc because it always feels impersonal but this kind of helps make it personal and so you can stand out virtually before actually connecting over a phone or in person. Thank you!

Today is hard... I usually tailor my messages (according to that person's activity and profiles on LinkedIn) when I want to network with the professionals and recruiters, but the chance I'm getting a reply is still 2 out of 10. I hope it will become better but it really discourages me and even makes me doubt myself... I feel nowadays you need to have a strong heart to build networks haha Thank you for your video and advice, Markell! Even though I've been constantly disheartened, I think I will keep trying and use your tips this time lol. I wish you all the best!

Hello Market, thank you for the great video. I do however, have a question: step 0 is applying online, at what stage of the game/process should I apply? Immediately or after I have spoken to a recruiter or advocate who can help endorse my application?
@MarkellBaldwin
@MarkellBaldwin 7 ай бұрын
Great question! Whenever you feel prepared. Sometimes it’s helpful to talk to recruiters or other folks to help you optimize how you pitch yourself in the application. But the balancing act is not belaboring the application such that you never do

@@MarkellBaldwinI tried networking a few years ago with a focus on a few companies I really wanted to work for. I took the advice of a networking professional I came across. I found a few people on LinkedIn within those companies who I thought might be good to reach out to. I did what the networker said to do by crafting a doc. about what I admired about the company, briefly mentioned my field and I asked them if they had any guidance on how I could eventually stand out for a position with their company. I did not hear back from either of them. What did I do wrong?

Same! I’ve tried to implement some follow up motion and a mental note about the person. The follow up motion is to close the thread on whatever we discussed or what they offered. It could be a simple thank you to a “that article was great for these reasons”. And the mental note is to keep in mind something you can offer them or check up on. I always like sharing resources with others that I think will benefit from it. It’s a nice “thinking of you” gesture instead of a blank “how goes it” message.

Shoutout to the algorithm! And there are unspoken rules. It's like a school paper, you can't plagiarize, BUT if you give proper credit, it's probably OK.

What would be a job title(s) for the advocate position that a company might have? I know sometimes recruiters go by different titles so I’m wondering if it might be the same for the advocate role.
@MarkellBaldwin
@MarkellBaldwin 2 жыл бұрын
Besides recruiters, anyone with the title you want or in the area of interest that is actually engaged online or shows hints at being receptive to cold outreach (content, specifying interests on their profile) works. I try to think of it as an experiment too. You won’t know exactly who but the only way to find out is to reach out. You’ll start to see certain messages that are more receptive or people who tend to respond more frequently.

Your tips in theory are great. However, I have tried your method(s) prior to viewing your video and it NEVER works. It seems like LinkedIn is only used for people showcasing their accomplishments, but no one is willing to help. I do apologize for sounding negative.
@MarkellBaldwin
@MarkellBaldwin 2 жыл бұрын
No apologies necessary. I totally hear you and I definitely think there’s a lot of self serving and promotion on LinkedIn. I’ve been thinking of redoing this video with a Twitter lens as I’ve found that to be a more valuable source to connect with people.

Yes! I’d like to think mine is a good example. I create posts, articles and share videos. And I also ensure that I pin or “feature” my best posts on my page. And in general, some tech recruiters do a great job at creating engaging profiles.

HELP! I had two connections who used a generic request but I did tell them both why I loved their profiles then informed them about the position I applied for and I asked for details about their experience with the company. I know my message was read but no reply. Should I send a new message? I really want to work for this company and just want an opportunity to showcase my abilities.
@MarkellBaldwin
@MarkellBaldwin 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Derricka! If I’m gathering your situation right, you requested a connection and shared a message in the request. They read it and added you to their network but no reply. If my understanding is correct, that definitely happens a lot. It could be they didn’t read it or they perceived the question as too much effort to respond to at the time. It doesn’t hurt to follow up at all. I’d bump the message by saying “just wanted to follow up, if you have 5 min to chat or tell me how I can do X” I think you’ll have better odds. If a question is too vague or open ended, I find it hard to give a meaningful response. And often that turns into no response. Let me know what happens!
