Here I walk through each insulation I considered, and the thought process behind my final choice. There are many pros & cons to each option, so this may help you with your final choice! After an overview of insulation types, I show how I insulated my van with 3M Thinsulate, and what I learned along the way.
MATERIALS:
3M Thinsulate - amzn.to/2OmOC0W
3M High Strength Adhesive - amzn.to/32bjEAK
I also used this adhesive....
3M High Strength Contact Adhesive - amzn.to/3gVfIbK
Shop Shears - amzn.to/2C5LCmX
Reusable Respirator - amzn.to/328adCi

It's awesome to see a woman doing all of this. I'm a 57 year old woman that has never really even picked up a power tool. You have really encouraged me. I have actually installed a skylight and two solar panels on the roof. I have a long way to go but it makes me feel like I can do anything.

I really appreciate the detail in your videos! My partner and I are building out a sprinter. B/c I had the time, I did all the insulation and sound deadening - it's been great rewatching the parts that we've already done and then looking to your videos for what's to come! The only thing I would add to this step is *gloves* - not only because the edges of vans are sharp (as seen by your gash) but cutting all that thick thinsulate gave me hot spots/pre-blisters on my hands!

Hey Linnea! I am about to do my insulation too - same stuff! Thinsulate and 3M 90. I can't wait for the quiet. On the interstate it's so loud I can't hear podcasts without cranking the volume! Q: what places did you end up using double thickness? Couple things I just read in case it helps: Can use tape around the edges to make sure it doesnt fall off the ceiling or walls (maybe vibration will do it?) Don't forget to do the "headliner", right above the front seats, in that storage nook. Or the front doors. This guy lists all the places to insulate, I will put the link in the next comment.

You are outstanding !! I learned from you about( how little that I know about it) insulation. I was going to use the wool ,but after what I learned from you about the downside of wool it is out. I did not think of using 3M thinsulate. But I'm going to try it. Note: on your wiring use what is called SJ cord ( it is sold in 2 wire(12 volt) and 3 wire(120 volt) it is like a drop cord( that use to plug in your tools) I want to thank-you for teaching a old dog new tricks!

I am so sad when I see soooo many people spend so much time and money insulting and leaving so many thermal bridges that will more than likely lead to condensation build up introducing water into your wall cavities. I love that people are DIYing there is just so many popular videos that may not be good examples for how to do things to help with longevity. Spray adhesive contains many of the chemicals that you may be trying to avoid. Some of the sustainable insulations options you mentioned are great for stationary buildings but not for moving vehicles. The R-value listed is based on controlled conditions and are often not valid for the way people install the insulation in vans, which is something that companies unfortunately do not advertise but hide in the fine print. I hope you had many good years with your van! Keep building and designing!

I always wanted Havelock Wool, but U have made me re-think about that. The only thing about that spray your using is that it's cancer chemicals!! 3m company is health hazardous! I will go another way installing the thinsulate. Thanks for this video it shows how to do very clearly. Thx

Hi, I never found you on tik tok, I believe it's a age thing! I'm enjoying the build so far, especially the maxxfan episode which was my go to video for installing mine just last Saturday. We have different products here in England, for example the main insulation to be used here is "recycled plastic insulation" which I'll be fitting in a couple of weeks, I've got the floor to sort out this coming weekend. I have a Fiat Ducato which is the same vehicle as yours but different badges and probably engine (2.3 diesel). Looking forward the next episode, cheers. X

Wow, thank you so much for this amazing feedback! I am really happy to hear that you were able to avoid some of the mistakes that I made! Very interesting to hear about the products you have - I watched a lot of videos from England when I was deciding on my rust prevention process, and I ran into that, realizing a lot of the things used we didn’t really have here. Good luck with your floor next! Mine took me a lot longer than expected :) best of luck with the build!

Thanks for the video. I like your way but I might prefer to cover all bars, the entire door, and not just where you can put that stuff inside. A good deal would not be touching metal but enough to secure it. I have yet to see any KZfaq van builds do that. It would certainly provide more insulation because of no gaps. In addition, my securing method very well might not be glue but some method where I can remove for maintenance or replacement. Yes, putting huge sheets of insulation down all sides with open gaps behind it, will reduce cabin space a bit. I am willing to accept that. The condensation sealing argument: I agree with the concept that condensation prevention primarily from good ventilation. Sealing should be done to prevent rainwater entry, of course, where necessary.

hi Linnea, if you have time to answer two questions please, i would really appreciate it... one - what is the silver piece in the center of each area under your thinsulate and why ? two - does it matter if you put the black part inwards or outwards cause my thought was to glue the white part to a thin piece of wood and just plop the wood pieces onto each area...that way no glue needed on the van + easy removal. cheers !

Curious how well the insulation has worked in your van the past few years. I saw in your most recent videos that you are wintering in Wisconsin. Does it seem to be working well or is there anything you would do differently? Great video! Curious on the random placement of the sound deadening material? I’ve seen this in some other people’s videos too? Also curious the areas that looked like you had painted them silver over the sheet metal? Thank you for your time! Lastly what was the model for the thinsulate material you used. We were really impressed with your insulation job! Just bought our van and appreciate your videos.

Yeah! So what I learned from my research is that the sound deadening should take up about 20-25% of each area. Some people will cover the entire interior, but I have read that it doesn't work as well and is a waste of money. There is some differing opinions here haha! So I just tried to eyeball different sections and cover about a quarter of it. I hope that makes sense!

@@Linneaandakela Hello Linnea/Akela, I’m curious to on the size of roll u ordered, cause I’m got totally confused when I checked ur link, the link showed 2 sizes, the biggest being 20’ x 60’ and the cost of that roll was $170. U said urs cost $470. 2 rolls b 4 tax is $340, 3 rolls $510. I sooo want to be as close to correct as I can be when I go to order Thinsulate. Thank u
