This was cool. It was odd being in the middle of how Linus records stuff with all the stopping and starting.. I am not used to that at all. But I gotta appreciate this: if I am hired to cover an auto show in Manhattan, and I have a choice between going back to the hotel pool and ordering some drinks on the client's dime when I'm done or paying for a cab to make content on my free time... I dunno. I'd probably choose the former. Linus chose the latter. He lives to make content on things that might be interesting, and was such a cool sport about all of this. I didn't expect that he'd actually make time to come down after suggesting he try out the machine, but he did: thank you! And of course, go figure, it didn't work.. almost nothing you want to does. :) Certainly not as bad as the "whoops" video from March 29th where the board goes on fire and nearly burns my nose off( all on camera :( ).But cool nonetheless.

Linus' video was for normal people who dont even have a solder machine. Ofcourse thats not the professional way to do it, but you can dam sure try baking your out of warranty gpu at home and test your luck. Linus has an amazing work ethic I think!!!!

Yes apologies for that the ones we sent him where very last minute and where of a later model as we did not have any other magnetic adapter with us at all. Hence why we only sent him two... I can rest assure this does not happy normally expect on an extremely rare basis where the tip head was slightly made a bit smaller but in those rare cases we replace the tips for free of course. +zeldamaniac I think that's mainly because of two things: a) He has to censor himself since he cannot swear at all in a video meant for Linus' channel. I think having to constantly think about your phrasing will put anyone a little on edge. b) Besides not swearing, everything he says or does will come under heavy, heavy scrutiny by a HUGE audience of over 2 million. That is quite an unusual situation for Louis and I think that even a normally confident guy like him will be slightly dampened by that.

That SSD is dead forever, and that GPU, when his little temp fix dies, which it will, will likely be unfixable because of the heating Linus did. Louis explained this.Linus EVEN said it was temporary in this very video. You cannot fucking bake a GPU to fix it. It's just as fucking stupid as it sounds.

+soulshot96 And yet, people do it all the time successfully. And if it doesn't work, a few hundred dollars for a replacement part is a helluva lot cheaper than $7,300! Even if your local computer shop has one of these machines, the cost of the (maybe) repair would likely be a good chunk of the cost to just buy a new part--so why not just take a chance on the home repair?

What perspective? All he does is repeat things he is told or reads on a spec sheet. The guy is a complete idiot. Sure hes good at taking consumer electronics out of tis packaging and then reading the script that came with it, but thats about it.

The perspective I was referring to was the one Linus's camera crew captured at Louis's shop from never before seen camera angles. If you've ever watched Louis do board repair he typically presses record and talks to the camera for 30-40 minutes with just about zero video editing and the camera angles are always the same. So it was interesting to see the shop literally from different camera perspectives. But in Linus's defense, I wouldn't recommend calling anyone an idiot when they've got a top ranking tech channel.

but the point of the video was to inform people that if you really need to repair a GPU dont just go put it in an oven, more often than not such quick fixes may actually end up worsening the problem making it harder to fix them. Its the same as the HDD recovery guys say, dont run chkdisk on a bad drive, it'll make recovery that much more difficult. I learnt it the hard way, took it for recovery the guy said its an easy fix, thought i'd try out chkdisk came back with a worse drive from which only 75% data could be recovered. Had I not used chkdisk all of my data could have been recovered.

There is nothing "staged" aout the way he handled it though. He didn't get defensive. He reached out and wanted to be shown the correct way, both to learn, and to share with his audience. so basicly unless you have a expensive solid state ssd with lead free solder oven won't work but if it's a gpu it will last you a few more months with oven method but Louis is bullshit does any of his repairs actually fix anything if it's a blown core chip then yes but if the whole board is fucked why even bother doing it

I have seen the replacement of a BGA in practice, it involved re-balling the BGA and cleaning all the solder off the pads - neither is trivial with the minute geometry you are trying to manipulate by hand. Hats off to both of you for getting even a modicum of success.....

Wafelwaffel I watched his video too and it didn't really seem to me he meant it like that. Most things you see in any form of entertainment is set up. That doesn't necessarily mean every detail is planned out though. Could have just been something as simple as "I'm gonna go outside to shoot my intro and then I'll come in and we can just get right into it". In Rossman's video he talks about Linus always thinking about getting the right shots and stuff like that. Idk. Doesn't really matter either way lol

Linus just earnt a lot of respect. Louis called him an idiot and instead of just dismissing it, Linus actually deferred to his expertise without letting himself be pushed around. Louis can be a hot head but knows his stuff., At least these two had the maturity to resolve this in a very positive way. I wish more internet arguments were resolved like this.

You know... i once had a Radeon HD4850, awesome card for the day, but after a few years suddenly got some nasty artifacts. So i was out of warranty, as a student I was out of money and behold he oven method popped out. Needless to say that graphics card worked flawlessly half a year after i baked it in the oven, and it didn't fail, i just upgraded to another...
