i personally believe in doing this only bc they are facing shots of immense speed and need to be protected at all times. and if one of your buckles comes loose could definitely cause injury since the helmet is not properly secured.

You are correct (and it also affects the goalie's vision) but what a goalie usually does is he shakes his head hard enough so that his facemask falls off his head. As the announcers mentioned, Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues tossed his facemask (like Ullmark did) earlier on in the season and got a warning for doing so - then did it a second time in the same game and got a minor penalty for delay of game.

Yes I agree to an extent but a blown strap on a helmet is better than taking and 80+ mph slapper from the point to the face. Too much of a deliberate act here to justify pulling it off. I'd roll my dice the other way in my opinion

The other night Gibby had his mask buckle pop loose during the game, and he was yelling at the ref for 20-30 seconds before they blew the play dead. I really don't understand why they don't blow it dead immediately, you can even see Gibby talk to the ref after the play with his mask off and mouth "What if I get a shot to my head?" and the ref is there trying to argue his stupid fucking decision to not blow the whistle. Protect our players by calling ghost trips, ghost hooks, ghost slashes, and ghost cross checks, but lets let our goalies play without a secure mask with 100mph slappers coming at them. Clowns. The other thing I hate is the new chest protectors that did away with protecting up high near the neck. Ever since that change, I've seen multiple goalies get hit near that collar bone area and go down hard.

Literally bro I saw quick had the same problem too his helmet strap was off for like 20 seconds and the ref didn’t blow the whistle. It needs to be a rule as soon as a strap comes loose they need to blow the whistle

These comments are right on. Yet I discovered a few years ago, the reason why this is so difficult to call is because it's not a one size fit all answer. They all have to meet a certain standard yet, all goalie masks aren't equal, don't strap them the same way, or use the same number of straps. Many goalies like Hellebuyck & Gibson are gray area, their names always come up in this controversy- they don't use chin straps. but I lean more toward it being an unfair advantage. They'll need to find a way to make the goalie to pay for that risk they choose They don't fasten their chin straps, probably don't have one in their masks - they're asking that mask to flip off more easily. Should we force goalies to strap their masks all the same with the same number of straps? I don't know. (Not suggesting it) Going from being a parent of a goalie, progressing into goalie skills coaching - we sit with our butts clenched the first couple of seasons while pucks go flying at our kids! Then the kids get bigger, and the pucks get faster Then we move on to not just looking out for our kids, but everybody's! (Anyone under the age of 30 is "a kid" lol!) Always kept new throat guards, not stretched out straps- at the ready! But here's a name for you that messes us all up - Binnington. I do not trash elite athletes' reputations, by now it's arguable based on evidence, He pulls crap -or he's not wearing a chin strap. Based on the evidence seen by fans- I think he'd throw a mask, bump the post out if moorings, etc to stop a goal So, goalies like him, or ones that wear masks like him, are the reason why refs don't give goalies the benefit of the doubt. I think Binnington got in on the concept - " rules are made to be broken" But not this one, can't cry wolf too many times as a Stanley cup winning goalie. No excuses. Shuddup or get off the ice! I'll give him the benefit of the doubt to assume he grows up I did the same for our lil Ratt Brad & Temper- Tantrum Tuuka. 😁 But goalies that don't wear chin straps need to be singled out, some way. I don't have the answer - but I'm betting thousands of NHL fat lawyers are working on it as we speak! And they'll keep working on it for the next 10 years cuz they get to watch hockey games, drink beer, decide the rules of a sport they've never played! While laughing all the way to the bank off of NHL revenues, suspensions and fines George Parros and his safety player committee bring in - the more regulations, the merrier! Yet they still won't address the mask issue. They settled the player helmet issue - we all remembered Torey krug's last legal hit without wearing one 😲 They'll wait for a tragedy on the masks - they're lawyers, ambulance chasers. That seriously doesn't change wherever they work.

@@ano1962 He actually is right with regards to goalies masks (I have no idea about soldiers helmets). The straps are designed to pop-off and "spring back" with the back plate during a heavy impact specifically to absorb the force of the impact. It's actually pretty common for a buckle or 2 to pop-off when there's a heavy shot that hits the mask directly. I play beer league only, and even there, some guys can rip shots in the upper 70's and 80's, which causes my mask to pop sometimes (since they just don't aim as well as pros) So just imagine shots with pro-level power being deflected or improperly aimed hitting a goalie mask.

@TheFoolintherainn
@TheFoolintherainn Жыл бұрын
They do penalize them when they do it "on purpose" Refs get that one more right than wrong. Yet that's not relevant to this video, and it's disrespectful. Why did you go there with this guy? You're slandering an elite athlete anonymously, on your Obama phone sitting in your mama's basement? blows me away how people are still disrespecting this goalie - after everything they put him through last year. You just can't stop hating! The guys blows away records, bruins fans finally realized Jeremy swayman is only 6 ft 2 in, he was never going to be a starting goalie on a Stanley cup team - the last USA born USA trained goalie to get the cup was in 1994! Duh? Have we not gotten over Jeremy yet? You didn't see the writing on the wall? Fell for that clickbait? So the first thing you're going to do is accuse linus of cheating? It's right in front of your face, not even like blue dress /silver dress! You see the bruins defender's knee hit goalies helmet - it's very clear if you slow it down while he was sprawled on the ice, he kept tracking the puck - head lifted, pause the video and see exactly where his head is, up facing the shooter playing through the play - not trying to throw his helmet off to stop a goal I didn't see his hands trying to mess with his helmet or rip it off? He made an absolutely AMAZING save lifting his stick! That was his hockey vision, most likely didn't see that puck, but goalies know where the puck is going to come from, even before the shooter Even if they can't see it, they can stop it cuz they know where they are exposed- linus probably saw the position of the shooters skates and stick blade, that tells him what type of shot is coming in and where. He knew it was going there, made a blind save he never actually saw the puck because his helmet was not on properly Goalies know what they know, what they know! When the puck was out of the crease, that particular play was over, no rebound- That's when he tossed his helmet and asked for help I don't think a goalie is going to do this "on purpose" because there's so many cameras on everything And - a buncha fat lawyers sitting in the situation room drinking microbrews and Molson beers playing hockey gods, while they run the videos through their computer algorithms Goalies can't get away with it It's knocking- the -net -off -the -posts right before a goal "trick", that happens far more often And you're not going to see ullmark intentionally do that, and the fact that I need to explain why? Means you don't know what you're talking about and keep reading so you can learn - He knows it's not to his advantage to knock the net off, he needs it. It's his friend! First, Goalies do not want face-offs in their end. For many teams, those are worse than handling power plays Second at his elite skill level? he knows exactly how to use those posts as an extension of his stick, helmet and blocker - so he wants that net in place. He counts on it to help him stop pucks. Yesterday, bruins beat Islanders in overtime shootout. There were comments from fans saying how the goal posts did all the work in overtime, ullmark didn't have to save a puck? "All he had to do was stand there" 🤔 And it blows my mind that I have to explain this! he knows how to use every inch of that 6' 5" stature, hold his position with precision, don't flinch, don't give the shooter anything - and all he leaves them to shoot at are... The posts! He gives them nothing else! Shooters have no choice but to try to bounce it off the post because ullmark has every other centimeter covered! Have you ever seen them get it between his pads underneath him in a shootout? I don't ever remember that. They don't even bother trying, they need deflection help from a post or another player, to get anything past ullmark! A goalie is so skilled, so strong, patient, won't flinch, give a shooter anything - and he leaves them with nothing to shoot at but metal. It's amazing with all this internet stuff you can google, anyone can learn this position and sport now.. but the ignorance just continues I speak up in my microphone from time to time, because I've coached goalies, you're trashing a top elite vezina candidate. You're going after the wrong guy You should also know, Binnington tried claiming equipment failure twice in one game - it didn't go well for him Once in awhile, the refs get it right the first time Putting a comment like that under this video is disrespectful, unfounded and here we go again... You just have to keep trashing Linus ullmark?

It needs to be an automatic minor. Sure there's a safety concern. But if it's that big of a concern then a 2 minute minor is worth taking. Regardless, I'm not buying the "sight lines change" or the "can't get it back in properly" argument. I've seen goalies bop the top of their mask to reseat it. So, now it's on, that takes care of the safety issue. Sight lines changing? Well... that's hockey. That's the same thing the skaters deal with when they get fog, water, ice, or sweat on their visor. We're going to start seeing goalies that are out of position chucking their masks. Kind of like this one... he was way out of position, sliding away from the crease, and flat on his stomach. It had little to do with safety and everything you do with position.
