The "box" could have been plywood, cardboard, or Styrofoam, but then you would not have a cool grow tent in your video that was sent to the show free. You could also just run the duct or ducts from the exhaust ports of the PC which is already a box...

@@Lexaire Pretty much, yeah lol. Although it could be slightly more effective since it's pulling out the warm air from directly around the PC, the added hassle might not be worth the slightly cooler room.

This is kinda a fun one -- If the air outside is HOTTER than the air exiting his PC he'll have a net worse experience, BUT if the air leaving the PC is HOTTER than the air outside the air coming in via negative pressure will actually be a net positive as it'll take less energy to cool the outside air coming in than to cool the air being pushed out. His air quality is going to be garbage though and you have to take into account the electrical cost of running the blower.

Why even use a tent when you can connect the hose straight to the pc case? :)

That was the first thing I thought -- this seems like a misunderstanding of how the cooling of a home normally works. It's a closed-loop system. If this is constantly forcing air out, then somewhere else fresh outside air is being drawn in, which means the rest of the home is warming up due to bringing in warm outside air to replace it. Rather than the air conditioner having to only cool down the heat from the PC, now it's having to constantly cool the heat from the outside air! The real issue here is just air exchange with the rest of the home where it gets an opportunity to be cooled by the air conditioner.

I disagree, he is basically taking his PC, ~700W heat source, and not allowing it to vent directly into the room. The fresh air exchange is just a necessary part of the overall system.

It's not just that. It's even worse. He is pushing air outside. Which means that air from the outside the house is also rushing in. This means if your house is still cool - and outside it's hot - he actively HEATING the house up. Sure his room may suck all the nice cool air from neighboring rooms. But what he actually is doing is wasting his cool house air and exchanging it for outside hot air. This thing heats up the house/room. Just for a small period of time where this single room pulls cooler air from neighboring rooms it seems like it cools the room down. This is a really really bad idea. Especially on hot days.

Having access to a Trotec laser, it never gets old using it.

This would involve opening the door, which is not an option. However a door vent would greatly increase the overall air returned to the intake and prevent the door being closed from being a problem while also preventing unwanted shouting from being an issue. It would also help to have a smart thermostat like a nest with a wireless addon for it placed inside of said room. It may cause the rest of the house to get alittle cold while he's gaming, but overall a much better solution then him creating negative pressure and sucking out ALL of the cold air from his apartment and forcing his AC to run continuously while it struggles to cool air being poured in from any small cracks and holes in the walls and ceiling, probably mostly through any kitchen vents, bathroom vents, etc.

Also that seems a lot more inefficient in terms of cooling because you're using more fans and use more energy than just a single fan that direct exhaust, while cooler ambient air enters from different rooms cooling the rest of the house at the same time.

@@Smashachu Yeah he could probably 3D print a little piece that tapers down to the size of the Crack under the door, and hook it to a vortex fan. That should absolutely dump fresh air in, and the positive pressure will force stagnant air out the bottom of the door wherever the 3D print piece didn't fill it up

my living room has two vents either side of it(trailer), but is almost sweltering because there is no air circulation/airflow.

Fan will help but the heat is still dispersed into the room and a lot of it. With a grow tent, The air is pulled into a confined space and then the heat is directly dumped out the window instead of in the room and then out the window

@@leeroyjenkins0 Yeah, but the tent pulls cool air from the room, which pulls cold air from the rest of the house. You end up creating a negative pressure differential and that causes the home to pull hot air in from outside where there are air leaks in the conditioned space. This is marginally better than just putting a fan in the window, but still less efficient than using a higher flowing vent to compensate for the extra cooling needs, or adding an individual unit for that room whether window, wall, or mini-split. Nothing is free 🤷‍♂️

@@daqq most places have AC so they're still air coming in. The problem is you have to freeze the rest of the house in order to keep the hot room tolerable. You are correct and negative pressure. So if you're sucking in there that's been cooled and other parts of the house but that's okay

The shop was just for his window, I made an identical window adapter using a hotknife and a sheet of styrofoam. The rest could just be done with normal flexible tubing and some PC fans...

All you need is a tent, duct, inline fan, board, hole saw, flange, and duct clamps; in fact, you can replace the board, hole saw, and flange with a portable air conditioner window kit, making everything plug and play. Granted, I know my way around a grow room, but this is like a ten minute off the shelf project.

Given the level of custom fab available at LTT, they could just build a sealed case with an exhaust port to fit the ventilation.

I actually tried exactly what you are taking about a few weeks ago, you can actually buy premade 120mm fan to 4 inch venting adapters on eBay, I got a powerful DC fan to act as the exhaust but the problem was that the exhaust on the computer isn’t the only place the heat escapes from. I didn’t even think to make a housing for the entire computer. I’m thinking you could easily make a frame out of PVC piping. The actual housing can be any thermal inactive material

@@Prophes0r you could, but then the pc exhaust fans aren't going to be much help in adding extra velocity to evacuate the hot air. You'll be blocking probably 60% of the fan surface. With a manifold you could use those fans to your advantage.

Exactly, I would like 2 comparison tests, 1. Exhaust the PC back into the house outside the room through a wall vent from the grow tent. 2. Just an exhaust fan towards the top of the room without the tent through the wall. This is for house owners, that can add a hole in the wall. I hope the vent fan would work, if it did then it could be dressed behind a cold air vent return, with the fan inside. Or maybe like a bathroom vent that vents back into the house instead of the ducts, something low noise and nice looking. I would love to see the video on this. My office is 2-5 degrees warmer without a fan in the doorway, I would love the close the door during the day when working from home, but I am unsure the fan/vent would make a low noise difference. Make this video, please.

Yeah, i was kind of surprised they weren't pulling air in from the outside to cool the computer. It's only 30-35c outside, compared to a computer that normally runs at 50-60c that's still plenty of cooling capacity.

I've just wrote a comment about that. If he used two hoses - intake and exhaust it will work as intended, without creating a negative air pressure. He can also use much smaller turbine, or put it outside to reduce the noise from it.

You want your PC to have cooler air as well. The PC cooling can only do so much if your ambient temperature is very high. Also sucking in outside air has the potential to cause damage to your PC depending on your climate. If you have high humidity or live in a bad air quality area. I bet some of that would be solved with air filters.

Was thinking the same thing from the start. One intake one exhaust. Also like you sad the AC is now working harder so your paying for that in power bill. And if you dont have an AC this approach is also better if your inside air is cooler then outside, you wont pull hot air in to the building from other vents using a two pipe intake and exhaust solution.

Yeah that's what I was hoping they would do as this seems like it'd use a lot more energy. I feel like you'd only be able to use an in/out system when the outdoor temps are moderate though, i.e. not humid or above 80f. Still a fun project though

@@Catsrules1, I don't think the humidity would be an issue as long as the computer doesn't go sub ambient while running which is really shouldn't under normal circumstances. As that is when condensation would occur. Logic is that some people live in areas with constant high humidity if not 100% even indoors and their pcs are fine. The tubes could be angled up a bit before exhausting to make sure that there is no way for rain or such to make it's way back into the tube. But a rain shroud would be good outside too and of course a mesh to keep pest out. As for pollution I would argue that for a lot of things that may kill a computer like dust, hair and such indoors is probably worse a lot of times. But still a Filter like you said wouldn't be a bad idea just in case. As for the heat, unless the day is particularly hot the temperature is probably going to be only 10-20f higher then indoors. At night is might actually be cooler. Regardless though unless a pc being hit really hard for benchmarks or rendering are likely going to have plenty of headroom to game even if the air it's getting is 90f as long as there is enough airflow to move it out quickly like their exhaust provides. (Many peoples PC probably get that hot inside without good airflow.) If there live in an area with consistent 100f+ days then I might agree an interior air feed system would be better. But it should be fine tuned to figure out the minimum air exhuast needed to get the PC to run optimally. Everything past that point is just blowing the AC quite literally out the window.

@, don't forget the extra power from the exhaust itself on top of the AC losses. Double ouch to the wallet instead of what could be just one.

ITT: People who don't understand that air gets replaced. That fan is designed for a much larger tent, but it's not designed to cool the tent, it's designed to maintain negative pressure while air recirculates through a carbon filter, eliminating smell. When inline fans are used to evacuate heat, it's typically not from the room, but from sealed HID light fixtures, in hopes of preventing most of that heat from entering the room in the first place... which is what they did here, and where you all get it wrong. If you keep exhausting to atmosphere, your cool interior air will simply be replaced with hot exterior air, which is why those HID fixtures have an exterior air inlet... but that won't work for a computer. It doesn't matter how hot it is outside of your lights are burning at 3,000⁰F, but blowing 100⁰F air on your computer seems like a bad plan. So, yeah, an AC is a much better plan, and that's why we use them, even with air cooled HID lights. >in b 4 muh swamp cooler They work great in the green house, but that's a lot of humidity if you ain't in the desert.

@@hlaw2830 last I checked, outside air isn't 50°+ like it is in the case. I have used this form of cooling (negative pressure cooling) in a hot apartment, and as long as it isn't scorching outside, it is definitely worth it. Nobody cares about the specific fan, all that matters is that the waste heat (99.9% of the energy input into any CPU or gpu) is not mixing with ambient air and is instead being evacuated out the building in an efficient manner. A closed off room will get much hotter from a pc than from outside air coming in from another window, or through a vent.

50 C is 120 fahrenheit. the chance of temps being HOTTER are extremly low btw. Does not work the same way. Also for their case, they are in canada so i doubt they go above even 90 in summers.

The fact that this system is pulling air in from the rest of the house has me thinking that it would have been easier and more efficient to have some kind of super simple ventilation system that circulates air between the room and the rest of the house.

@@Gene669 I have 4, 8gpu mining rigs all in a grow tent. I vent the hot air up into my heating vents so it flows into the rest of the house in the winter. In the summer I just vent out a window and it works great. No need for anything like AC that someone else mentioned, just a lot of airflow.

@@ObeyThePapaya well yeah but that's temps at the SOURCE. It will drop significantly by the time it reaches the outside of the case, and even more once it travels the 16 feet of tubing he's using. I think the tent and tubing is redundant here, and he would have had similar results by just dumping room air outside and pulling air in from the rest of the space. He's not really disposing of the hot air that well because his grow tent isn't airtight at all, plus he even said how much air he can feel exchanging under his closed door. All he did was increase the circulation through his space by dumping air out a window.

The air gets sucked in also through sewer lines. You will notice the smell quite soon.

@Susanna A quick glance at Amazon shows that the Creality enclosures run right around what he paid for the grow tent (some cost more, some less) depending on the size. Didn't see any 10x the cost? There are, of course, plenty of way to DIY such an enclosure for significantly less (or more) depending on materials and time.

some people use grow tents for 3d printers still. (not arguing, your point is 100% valid) they also can work as a makeshift "clean" room, most supporting the addition of a carbon filter.

The dual hose are much closer to efficiency of (U-shaped) window unit, the portable they showed even had variable speed compressor, maybe also two separately driven fans? The midea U shaped window units would be much better around the same price, basically a compact mini split. However some communities won't even let you mount window units, so something like dual hose portable would actually be a best case scenario for many

@@ilovefunnyamv2nd Apparently (and I'm no expert) it will just grow to fill the available space. It makes no difference to yield or potency... plus you can get short bush plants, which helps a bit. As I said, apparently, because I've never done it myself & I'm no longer in touch with the guy who did it. His argument was that all the airflow, exhaust, and electrical requirements were already part of the case... so why not use it?

It's possible but it would but ditch weed for sure, because weed is very fussy over its growing conditions and generally likes to be kept at a certain temperature with fresh CO2 which... well a PC is never going to provide lul.

If you're just growing for yourself and not to sell, then you can get away with quite a bit.

My understanding it would be better to dump the hot air from the grow tent back into a larger room of the house and not outside. It's also why you shouldn't dump air into the attic as well.

@@GeoffHellings I tried doing this with a small fan once. I taped a trash bag around the fan and then stuck the bag under the door to blow air out of the room. It did move some air but it didn't really seem to make a difference.

I think the better solution would be to have the intake ducted to the outside air, that way the PC is completely isolated. It might run a couple degrees hotter, but the saved ac bill is worth it.

In the cooler seasons I just put a window fan in one window exhausting out and crack the other window open a bit. Keeps the room cool and thus cools down the PC

Ya, this is probably a bit more effective, since the PC heat doesn't get mixed with the room air at all, but just sticking an exhaust fan in the window would be a cleaner install and work well enough.

True. It may help with keeping the entire room cool, but that's removing cool air from the rest of the house which means your AC is going to be working harder. Installing a quiet exhaust fan that vents air from the room to the rest of the house might be a better option.

Oh yeah, bugs. Good point! Even on the second floor critters will find their way in, especially on cool days when the hotter air coming out of the house shows up as infrared. They'll home in on little gaps.

They definitally shouldnt be blowing conditioned air outside of the house. HUGE waste of energy, as well as warming the house overall and more strain on the AC unit.

@@p0xus Lol, so the elephant in the room is that the three of use are American, and as it turns out, AC is part of American culture. This is the only country where you can assume that someone has AC, and like you said, they're Canadian. There's literally a video of them installing AC in the old house, a bunch of mini splits. I live in an old run down house in a blue collar town and it was built with five tons on the roof. So, you make a fair point about it not being as hot up North for the most part, but... there's probably no AC to exhaust.

You can't duct every hole the eir is exhausting from, even doing some of them would be 1000x harder, 100x uglier, and waaaay less efficient. You're better off just getting a smaller tent.

@@cotneit It's too bad that you can easily cut the tent tubes, but you cannot shrink the fabric. How do you DIY it? I would put my money where my mouth is, but I am playing TradeWars 2002 right now.

​@@drippingwax Yeah, but how do you duct every hole in your case? I'm not saying you should DIY a grow tent, though you absolutely can "shrink" the fabric by creatively folding it after you cut the tubes to the size.

buy plexiglass(or wood), cut it to your window dimensions with the hole size for the same PVC plumbing (15,30,45°) pipe which you will connect to your insulated hose. you can stick velcro on the plexiglass for easy set up/removal on window you don't need many tools to do this and it costs 30$ total in materials + the tent + 50$ for the motor TBH its an good idea, but II would put all the hoses up the wall to the ceiling then to window out no clutter in the room if you buy spiral duct pipes, then its a lot sturdier and you can go smaller dimension

And you are absolutely correct! This is why better Portable AC units have 2 hoses! One is called a Heat Pump while the other is an intake, this cycles out the air but has a cooling effect overall on the room due to the AC doing its cooling job!

I was actually thinking the reverse after seeing the prusa i3. Using it as an enclosure instead. Just remember to move the PSU outside

Why not use the enclosure your computer already is in?

@@Jehty_ see, that's what I was thinking. Modify the top with 3d printed mounted enclosure to suck the air through a tube out the window. Still need the tube fan so you don't explode your pc fans, but it would achieve the same effect without needing a grow tent. Edit: you would set the back and front of the pc to bring in air and the top to push it out with the help of the tube fan.

Yeah I was thinking something similar to a Prusa Enclosure with holes that you can have the ducting come out of. Or maybe a PC case designed with the idea of having a duct to blow the hot air out
